So I bought a new dress yesterday and have been stopped at work and in shops to ask where I got it, its really flattering and a lovely colour so if anyone is looking for a new dress I'd highly recommend this one 😃Floral Square Neck Midi Smock Dress

Floral Square Neck Midi Smock Dress

With its striking floral print, this dress offers a stylish choice for daywear. It's cut in a comfy regular fit, with a flattering square neckline and short sleeves to make it ideal for warmer weather. All-over smocking gives a figure-hugging shape thr...

Funny when a dress just works for you isn't it? I bought a cotton (yay!) knee length shirt dress in Primark (lined as well!) for £12 last week - about 5 people complimented me on it - from the old lady in her 90s I visit to a young woman in my office. I felt like the bees knees in it!

Sometimes it is the cheap ones that get the compliments! I am finding that with my matalan bargains 😍

I cannot wait for this hideous trend of shapeless, flour sack like dresses to die.

Agreed. See also: bodycon dresses 😣

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 23/06/2023 10:51

Anybody else wish that M and S did videos of a range of sizes/height? Surely the cost would be outweighed by the cost of returned items.

Bodycon dresses haven’t been a trend in the last 10 years.

Bodycon dresses haven’t been a trend in the last 10 years.

Tell that to boohoo, PLT, River Island, Quiz, AX Paris, New Look, I Saw it First...a quick google brings up hundreds for sale right now

Dixiechickonhols · 23/06/2023 11:05

Well you’ve sold it to me Op. I’ve ordered it and pink one someone else linked. I’m 48 and love a bold colour and pattern.

Nice blatant advert. Dress is hideous.

Isn't it just? Are you sure people weren't just being nice op?!

Not for me OP, I’m short and have narrow shoulders so this kind of style just swamps me. Nice colours though and I’m happy to see more waisted styles returning.

Oh exactly the same for me, big sleeves look ridiculous on me, make my boobs look even bigger somehow.

Smocking yes, cotton yes, big sleeves no.

And by the time I've worked out what I like from M&S all the petite dresses are gone 😂

I buy a lot of trousers from M and S, but somehow the dresses don't often suit me. I did buy this and it's nice on me ( small bust, larger waist, small hips, size 10). I only like simple shapes. Linen Rich Printed V-Neck Tunic | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com)

Q: do these type of straight shift dresses look as if the wearer has forgotten her trousers?

I really don't like embellishments and extra fabric in a dress, especially tiers.

I don't work for M and S, I promise. Happy to look at other straight, simple dresses but high street prices.

Whataretheodds · 23/06/2023 11:33

OP that will be because the colour and shape suit YOU.

honeylulu · 23/06/2023 11:39

The colour and pattern are nice but either it's very baggy or the model is wearing a size far too big. I prefer the raspberry coloured one another poster posted. But I only wear black so ...

Lentilweaver · 23/06/2023 11:39

Am so sick of black and navy. Flattering though they may be...

WorkOfArt · 23/06/2023 12:02

I think it’s lovely but I can’t wear that shirring across the boobs.

redspottedmug · 23/06/2023 12:05

I have been browsing at M&S and found this: https://www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-tie-neck-midi-tiered-dress/p/clp60593127?intid=mobileappppdpshare

This is my current favourite dress. In black. It has pockets. It's cotton.

Lentilweaver · 23/06/2023 12:05

@BloodyPrime I quite like that for the beach. Maybe. Wary of Roman. Always looks great on the gorgeous models, not so much on me.

Emotionalstorm · 23/06/2023 12:21

Really? I'm surprised.

SaveMeFromForearms · 23/06/2023 12:26

I've just come back from Greece and this is just the kind of dress I've got sick of seeing everywhere.

It's shapeless, so they've ried to jazz it up with an inelegant print. Fits almost nobody very well, but won't look horrific on anyone either, just meh.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 23/06/2023 12:30

Looks nice on you but I dont like it at all. Sorry OP

Me neither.
I quite like the colours but I am an adult; I don’t want to dress like a milkmaid or a member of some weird religious sect.

My friend who is a size 12 was wearing something similar a couple of weeks ago and I think it added about two stones onto her.

Lemon1111 · 23/06/2023 12:36

I have this one, I love it so easy to wear :)

mistermagpie · 23/06/2023 12:48

I like this and it would suit me BUT (not bragging, just facts) I'm 5'8" and a size 8. I think these really oversized features suit the tall and slim, as does a big print, but can drown a petite person or make a curvier person look bigger.

Same as anything really, I look terrible in body-con because I have no curves but some people look amazing. I do like this dress but I don't think it's going to look great on every body.
