Where's the good stuff in M&S

Having read here that M&S had upped their offering I went shopping today with high expectations, it a larger branch too. Nothing! Bright Green, bright orange and a few t shirts. Denim selection would have been fine if they had anything in a 16

All online. The stores are not great. On my last trip I bought linen blend trousers ( easier to iron). And a trench coat.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/06/2023 22:03

I keep reading that M&S have 'upped their game' and I'd like to know the answer to this, as well. I saw an absolute abomination when I was in there the other day - long, droopy and in a colour that I can only describe as turd brown.

CatfoodOzymandias · 10/06/2023 22:05

I also like their GoodMove leggings. And wide leg trousers. But all online. The shops never have what I want.

I still like their bras, but I am not well-endowed so almost any bra works for me.

Toomuchleopard · 10/06/2023 22:11

Some of the people I follow on instagram have done a video in store of the displays and it looks great but my local store is rubbish. I find the website isn’t great so is hard to find decent stuff. So probably depends on if you have a decent size good shop locally.
thisisme_fashionably on instagram has some good videos from M&S

Most of it is still horrible tbh.

I bought these yesterday though, which I’m hoping will prove useful. I had to size up. I got the black ones.

They also had a black broderie sundress which was lovely from the front and fitted beautifully but had a cut out back. Nobody wants to see my bra/back so it ruined an otherwise lovely dress.

I like the sound of that, was it a dress? I am looking for something long and droopy that's not in a bright colour or print.

MsDastardley · 11/06/2023 08:08

Marks and Spencer drive me mad. I live close to a massive store and more often than not their own brand stuff is only available online, but the shop floor is full of brand concessions that I could easily get elsewhere, and use my Blue Light card to get a discount.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/06/2023 08:37

I saw that brown dress! The shape is actually quite nice and the fabric, though unnatural, feels pleasant. I think it’s another one with a cut out back though, if I’m remembering correctly, and it only comes in one colour.

Yep, what I can only describe as long and droopy. No idea of the fabric, I didn't check it out, I was just 😮at the colour.

WoodenFloorboards · 11/06/2023 09:20

M&S are my current darlings because they sold me a trenchcoat which had an inside pocket for my phone.
I've also just ordered this in two sizes, which I have high hopes for.
have been browsing at M&S and found this: www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-tweed-collarless-short-jacket/p/clp60595589?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share Jacket

I've bought these items recently in an olive ( or a medium green as they call it)
and they're great. It's such a brilliant colour for me.

Not an appealing colour, if it was in olive, black, russett or white then I would buy.

I like this brown colour. But why is it made in sweaty Modal with a hole in the back 🤔

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/06/2023 10:06

Wholeheartedly agree OP. I'm convinced at this point that the M&S department put it out into the aether (+ pay instagram influencers to tell us) on a regular basis that this time they've learned their lessons and really got it right and that they are now some sort of sorely underrated hot bed of affordable seasonal fashion and good quality basics.

I've never bought a single item of clothing in an M&S, and have looked many times. I always end up concluding the same thing when I go which is that it doesn't feel like I'm looking at an offer of clothing I would wear as someone in their mid thirties, and hits the mark quite widely for the mostpart - odd colour options and patterns, dated cuts and fabrics, inconsistent vanity sizing, poor size availability.

I know that you can go anywhere and find a gem and I've no doubt that's also true of M&S too but it's not happened to me yet. My nearest one is really nice to go in I'll give them that, and always immaculate.

rightioly · 11/06/2023 10:12

The only decent thing is their socks and sealed multi packs of knickers. Don't risk unsealed packets as there are some odd people that go to the knicker bit in m&s

Is this terrible? I have the one in white in my basket. all have got me rethinking everything I have ever bought. Posted it on another thread too! Pure Cotton Broderie Puff Sleeve Blouse | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com)

Do you like it and want to wear it? because in the end, that's all that matters. The colour's lovely.

CatfoodOzymandias · 11/06/2023 10:15

no, I don't like the pink one. I like the white one. Though not sure about the puff sleeves. But everything these days has puff sleeves. I do find that M and S cotton lasts and lasts.

dreamingofsun · 11/06/2023 10:18

keep fit leggings, sports bras, swimming costumes, jeans, got some great summer trousers with zips at the ankles which were recommended on here and vest tops. I have quite an outdoor casual lifestyle though, so depends what you are looking for

Modal isn't sweaty, it's cellulose, like cotton. The hole in the back adds interest and ventilation while still allowing you to wear most bras so I'd say it's very practical. They do have loads of more straightforward dresses as well, but this is a perfectly reasonable summer offering (albeit I personally also wouldn't wear that colour - but then I wouldn't touch that olive green above with a barge pole but the woman who posted it loves it).

I wear Modal in Winter & I like it as a material. But not in Summer as it makes me sweat like polyester, natural though it may be! Funnily enough I don't have an issue with Lyocell.
Yes, I love my green dress as I'm blonde & tanned & it suits my colouring ( soft autumn/summer). But then again I also really suit brown. Black is a little harsh on these days.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/06/2023 10:34

They had a couple of really nice shift dresses in our local one but I don't have a Shift Dress body and the patterns are very recognisable "Ohh you got that at M&S"
