Where's the good stuff in M&S

gogohmm · 10/06/2023 22:00

Having read here that M&S had upped their offering I went shopping today with high expectations, it a larger branch too. Nothing! Bright Green, bright orange and a few t shirts. Denim selection would have been fine if they had anything in a 16

@Catspyjamas17 I'm suprised at that as several of my most comfy pairs of sandals are M&S - having said that I haven't bought anything there for maybe 3 years in footwear

Me too - bought a pair of loafers, the chunky sandals and some slip on mules recently and all comfy and I usually have trouble buying comfy shoes as I have wide feet.
My best buy was not M and S but Crocs strappy Brocklyn sandals - brilliant. M and S are going to start selling Crocs soon.

Barney60 · 12/06/2023 12:40

Nothing ever fits me in M and S, the jeans are so tough its like trying to get frozen cardboard on ,or are too skinny on the legs.
The sleeves on tops and dresses are far too long. If you go for the short version of trousers (im 5ft 1) the legs are correct length but the waistband is under my armpits, same with tights, they shorten leg length but not body.
Think its time they fetched manufacturing back to the UK.

Libbabe · 12/06/2023 13:05

Don't bother with the shops, go on line. They never have 16 or above in sizes & just look pained when you complain.

MerryChristmasToYou · 12/06/2023 13:06

@Barney60 , the jeans from M&S are really good and there's a wide choice.
I've never found them stiff. The petite is aimed at 5'3" and under.

M&S are my current darlings because they sold me a trenchcoat which had an inside pocket for my phone.
I've also just ordered this in two sizes, which I have high hopes for.
have been browsing at M&S and found this: www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-tweed-collarless-short-jacket/p/clp60595589?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share Jacket

I got this and have had compliments each time I've worn it

I liked this relaxed trouser suit in navy too but they didn't have my size in store

Catspyjamas17 · 12/06/2023 11:21

Online definitely. My local store can be good but it's hit and miss, blink and you'll miss the good stuff, once it's gone it's gone. There is still too much crap in weird fabrics and colours and one length trousers though and it's a shame they can't be relied on still for basics, though they have been a bit better recently. I ended up buying men's chinos from there recently as the women's were all in pastel shades in autumn or in that slightly cropped length which I hate, or were sold in 29" inside leg only, and I need 31".

I agree, it's the basics that I want, and none of these trousers that are flapping about at half-mase.

On the back of "Who on earth wears bright orange" ? I had a search for orange dresses .
They had some (not orange) skater dresses which I usually love ..but bloody tiers !

I ordered a slip dress mini -should come knee length or just above on me . Nice for pottering and good for over a swimsuit on holiday .

M&S used to do the 5 pocket jegging years ago which were brilliant
I have a pair of the jeans but not worn them yet .

They did brilliant cotton ju,pers , round necked . Not synthetic or boxy or awful colours .

I like the full briefs that have "Body" on the waistband (£12 for 4) but could only find in black/white . Nothing skin tone or pastel .

I got a really nice cotton jumper earlier this year, but they only had it in navy and I'd have like a bit of colour.

TragicMuse · 12/06/2023 16:10

I just had a look online. I'm interested in nice skirts. Wtf is midaxi? And why is it the same length as a midi?

That aside, the tiers thing is so all-pervasive and so very very ugly...

Spamlla · 12/06/2023 16:53

Midi is just below the knee. Maxi is floor length. Midaxi is in between, just above the ankles.

What annoys me is when you search for Maxi and it brings up a load of dresses which are well above the ankle. They are not maxi dresses!! Or when a nice maxi dress has a split right up the side - if I wanted to show my legs I wouldn’t be buying a maxi dress!

lovescats3 · 12/06/2023 18:11

What do you mean about only buying knickers in a sealed pack ?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/06/2023 18:48

nopuppiesallowed · 12/06/2023 09:37

I DO worry about 'inclusivity' in the changing rooms. Taken to its conclusion, surely inclusivity could mean that a bra fitter could be a man self identifying as a 'woman'. If so, I really wouldn't be happy with asuch a person measuring my grand daughter for her first bra - would you?

Well, a) I assume an adult relative would be on hand anyway, just as they would with a young girl being examined by a doctor of whatever sex and b) I'm sure you could ask for a specific member of staff or for it not to be a specific member of staff.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/06/2023 19:52

@Spamlla Ooh I quite like those - I've got nice ankles but shit knees!!

You are right. A mother or gran would be on hand. The difference is that of a doctor behaved inappropriately, his career would be at risk. A bra fitter in Marks....not quite the same, is it?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/06/2023 21:21

I think more than a career (or job in M&S) would be at risk.

coeurnoir · 12/06/2023 21:24

They also had a black broderie sundress which was lovely from the front and fitted beautifully but had a cut out back. Nobody wants to see my bra/back so it ruined an otherwise lovely dress.

I saw that one. So lovely from the front and then ugh. I've bought a lovely floaty cotton dress recently - with sleeves. And a totally gorgeous black broderie anglaise dress - it fitted perfectly and looked amazing even on fat old me. Needed my husband to help me with the zip up the back, but minor details 🤣

@CatfoodOzymandias Which linen blend trousers do you recommend?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/06/2023 07:23

@coeurnoir Can you link to the black zipped dress, please?

Darhon · 13/06/2023 08:52

Bright green, pink, orange are in this year. That said they have loads of navy and black and the stores are more streamlined and they are finally sorting their supply chains so more sizes are available.

There are a couple of 40s/50s Instagrammers who have deals with them who showcase their clothes well: backofthewardrobe and Buttonsandblazers

I’ve had some good buys from M&S lately. I often order online and pick up at my local large store. I agree about the sizes disappearing quickly, even online, although I have found that if you “stalk” an item, it sometimes comes back in to stock. I managed to get hold of a pair of their black crepe wide leg trousers which are amazing for work and even flatter the bum! I bought some fab chunky loafers in the winter, but the summer sandal are awful imo. They seem to have gone back to really orthopaedic looking styles. I can get on with their T-shirts either. The filters are too clingy and the other fits I find look a bit masculine on me.
As for the orange, I’m toying with have been browsing at M&S and found this: www.marksandspencer.com/floral-notch-neck-lace-detail-blouse/p/clp60592197?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share This at the moment nice seen it in store and it’s much nicer than it looks online, but I think it’s a tad pricey

@CatfoodOzymandias Which linen blend trousers do you recommend?

I have these in chambray and navy. They are linen mix which I find better, as less ironing. Linen Rich Wide Leg Trousers | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com)

M and S tops are usually too frilly for me, and their tshirts often turn out to be polyester.

@CatfoodOzymandias Thank you! Problem is, I'm quite petite and short. Everything looks fantastic on those long-legged models... Not so much on us littles.

YinYogi · 13/06/2023 13:08

I like M&S for trousers.

Otherwise, I don’t know what game people are speaking of! All I can see online are hideous shapeless midi dresses and overpriced t-shirts!

StopStartStop · 13/06/2023 13:10

No. Make M&S pay for their advertising.
