Where's the good stuff in M&S

Having read here that M&S had upped their offering I went shopping today with high expectations, it a larger branch too. Nothing! Bright Green, bright orange and a few t shirts. Denim selection would have been fine if they had anything in a 16

Like everywhere else , tiers on skirts . I see a nice dress , pick it up. Tiers .

And some loose fit trousers but there are ugly stitched outer seams , like overlocking in black thread .

CatfoodOzymandias · 11/06/2023 10:38

Oh god yes, I hate tiers. I almost bought a plain black dress online and it turned out to have tiers in the reviews. makes me look like a cake.

I hate tiers too. I've spent the last four years checking for them. Will be very glad to see the back of them when the shops finally get bored.

I think the cotton and linen blend things generally are quite good actually. And I am really liking the Jaeger branded stuff in the bigger stores. I do get a bit kerfuffled with the massive number of options when seeking trousers (in particular) so I really need to be in the mood to shop, and preferably on my own, on a day that's not too hot as I have to try trousers on. But overall it's better than it has been for a long while.

Downsizeddumpling · 11/06/2023 10:54

I’d like to find some gems in there too but everything seems to be off in some way, like they have started with a good idea and then decided to back away from it or go in another direction. The Jaeger stuff is just blergh and that’s just from looking at it. There was a Jaeger dress around January last year that even in the sale was over £100 and made of polyester. I like their Good Move range.

Having despaired of Marks for years, I have been buying there again. Our local one has a very large selection beautifully laid out. The summer stock is great. What is distinguishing them from other shops at the moment are the number of garments made in natural fabrics eg I bought two beach ( but nice enough to wear at night) dresses in pure cotton. I also like the fact that many of their clothes appear to be made in commonwealth countries and not China. Their shoes are still pretty awful though Confused

M&S are my current darlings because they sold me a trenchcoat which had an inside pocket for my phone.
I've also just ordered this in two sizes, which I have high hopes for.
have been browsing at M&S and found this: www.marksandspencer.com/pure-cotton-tweed-collarless-short-jacket/p/clp60595589?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share Jacket

I've been moaning about this jacket for months - I want it in black and of course, they don't do it in black. It's lovely.

Mushroo · 11/06/2023 11:02

I’m liking it atm! I’ve bought two dresses (one a white and black polka dot sun dress, and the other a green and white ‘oversized’ style one) and I’ve been happy with both!

i like they do petite sizes

I like this jacket too. Navy is sold out, of course.

gogohmm · 11/06/2023 11:05

The fact they had no bra sized swimwear annoyed me too, I need a 34e, a 16 just doesn't fit

Bought it in cream. It’s a really nice jacket.

@gogohmm - try www.landsend.co.uk as they do swimwear in bra cup sizes DD-DDD (American sizes and a DDD is the same as a UK E).

They always have sales (currently 50% discount on many swimwear styles) so you won’t need to pay the full retail price.

M&S drive me round the bend. We have a vast store near us and yet there are never any other sizes than tiny or huge. Why they have an utter inability to keep sizes in stock is a serious problem. Plus, in this huge store, there is only the tiniest section for tights which is why everyone goes, lets face it…..😡

ViscountessBridgerton · 11/06/2023 12:04

I also tend to have more luck online and I buy 'basic / essentials' from M&S such as their fitted tees, but otherwise I rarely find a dress etc that I like in there. Don't find their jeans comfortable.

However I will say, I have bought 3 pairs of these trousers in different colours because they're so comfortable and flattering, great for 'in between' weather

Don't give up hope, the cream was sold out a couple of weeks ago. I schlepped round London in search of shops that had it in stock with no luck, and then it came back in stock online.

BHRK · 11/06/2023 12:33

I bought a broderie Autograph dress in pure cotton. It’s a winner but now sold out in both colours and most sizes. I rate their cashmere highly

OliverBabish · 11/06/2023 12:40

I love M&S at the moment - I went in yesterday and there were several items I really liked the look of. I think it all depends on the store. I’m short so their petite range is a godsend

DP told me that the navy one was too Tory!

ginislife · 11/06/2023 14:04

@70isaLimitNotaTarget I'm glad it's not just me !!! Bloody frills on everything. I spot a fabric I like the look of in a style that looks good on top and there it is - a frill grrrrrrrr

MerryChristmasToYou · 11/06/2023 14:13

Stocks vary according to the area. My local ones are good. It's a relatively affluent area.

Jellylover · 11/06/2023 14:16

I’m impressed with their sandals and sling back shoes this season.

SparkyBlue · 11/06/2023 14:21

I've no M&S near me so all my shopping is online and yes I'm so impressed for the past 12 months. I'm only 4"11 and some of the petite stuff has been amazing

MissyB1 · 11/06/2023 14:22

I’ve bought loads from there in the last couple of months. 3 dresses (jersey cotton midi length), navy jersey blazer, good move stuff for Pilates, two pairs cropped jeans/chinos.

Our local store has all the good stuff.
