Went out in my new frock last night thought I looked rather okay.

I've lost loads of weight recently and feel like heading towards a New Normal Me.

But then scrolling through S&B I find I'm ubiquitous Sad

Aibu to think I should change my style ALREADY?

Also bonus points, for guess my size, age, favourite animal Wink

I don't need validation from Vogue or The Times but I think their writers might know a bit more about what they're writing about than the posters on here confidently asserting something is out or in.

Given their general of 'fashion' I'd be inclined to disagree.

They determine it. They like to think they discover fashion but really, they set it. If Celebrity Woman steps out in an outfit that's not being seen much, they decide whether she's out of touch or simply so stylish and on trend that she's literally the first to wear the hot new thing that makes everything else passé.

Even weirder when the fashions are set out in advance, which they are.

VWHoliday · 05/06/2023 14:22

I don't feel like I'm wearing proper footwear with ballet pumps.

I just don't like the look either.

isthismylifenow · 05/06/2023 14:07

It certainly beats 'circle back' and those terms. if I think of another thread here, another one is ..... 'quiet luxury'

I admit I had to put ubiquitous into Google for them to tell me how to pronounce it. 😂

Yeah, I’m not quite sure how to pronounce it either tbh, so I might just do that too.. 😅

Mirabai · 05/06/2023 14:25

Ballet pumps are not the only kind of pumps around - I agree those are not very comfortable. But you can get chunkier pumps, pointed pumps, slipper style pumps, loafers etc, and y’know sandals. All are less hot and more flattering than trainers imo.

Fleebags · 05/06/2023 14:25

@isthismylifenow 'quiet luxury' annoys me so much for some reason. 😂

I love loafers and sandals that are a bit chunky.

I wore two dresses at the weekend (knee length) with sandals.

I probably won't wear trainers with dresses this summer because I fancy a change but have worn them in the past.

FishHeadsAndTales · 05/06/2023 15:00

I think a dress, denim jacket and casual shoes looks fab.

I just think it's the wrong denim jacket - this one takes away from your lovely shape..more fitted would be best.

The trainers are fine too, but less trainer trainers would have been better..casual but smart somehow.

Exactly - there's loads of options available under the generic word "pumps"

slithytoveisascientist · 05/06/2023 16:32

Agree that those m and s pumps are awful.

I also think that pumps in general are quite delicate and with a floaty dress often make the legs look disproportionate, while trainers or a chunky sandal balance it out a bit more.

I don't care if it's a uniform I'll be wearing my floaty dresses with chub rubs and trainers all summer as I like being comfortable.

Apologies to all, the stress of attaching the photo sent me to migraine hell.

I wasn't expecting many responses.

To answer a tew questions

Yes it's anthropologie dress, didn't realise it was An It though!

I like it loose because I'm vrry self conscious of flab and have spent years hiding and tring to blend into background because of weight and self esteem and confidence issues. My mind hasn't caught up with the reality of smaller body.

Bag is Mulberry Amberley, not sure the exact colour, a pake green.

Denim jacket (yes, you were all right, it's a remnant from bigger days) is Matalan. I'll definitely update that for smaller darker and shorter, thanks for the advice.

I would normally wear Air and Grace white leather trainers, but fancied a change - I can see this was a faux pas. Oof.

I'm 55.5 and 5 foot 5.5.

Im a large 16 at the moment I reckon.

I do feel the cold, I think it's common phenomena when You've lost significant weight.

I only have 4 bags, this was the least worst colour wise. And they're all croos-body styles because I flipping love them 🥰.

Tortoise is the creature - phone case is tortoiseshell effect 😂.

Neat corners on bed is because we're in a hotel!

There's been so many lovely comments on this thread, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate them, I dint think many of you could comprehend being significantly overweight for over 40 years, and never really getting a compliment. A tenth of these comments would have seriously made my year, so thank you v to all. 💐💐💐

Also justvon a minor note , the absolute joy of being able to walk into an aspirational shop like Anthropologie and be able to buy a dress is just still incredible to me, after all yhe years of buying the largest sizes in Evans and buyung clothes because well, they just fit, well that joy is immense, it's unbelievableto me and it's indescribable.

I think I've answered most now, excuse typos, brain is still fuggy.

Night night.

I love your response OP and it's absolutely wonderful that you have rediscovered the joy of choosing clothes that you love that make you feel good. Very well done on the weight loss, that must have taken a lot of hard work and willpower and it's great that it's paying off for you. I love the Anthropologie dress - it's lovely. I would also wear it with a denim jacket - personally I love the combination of a denim jacket and summery dress.

Greenshed · 05/06/2023 18:17

It’s a very pretty dress, love the colour. I personally would not choose that type of trainer to put with it. As others have said, a slimmer, white style (more plimsoll style, perhaps?) or some sandals (not chunky), would look better, along with a shorter more fitted denim jacket, either blue like yours, or creamy white.
We are all different though, and if you feel comfortable, then you wear it the way it is. What others think is really unimportant.

PennySc · 05/06/2023 18:17

Size 10, can't say the age. You look lovely, i personally wouldn't wear trainers with a dress like that as I am short and just prefer sandals, but who cares what I'd do, if that's what you like wearing

Mammatofour · 05/06/2023 18:19

You look absolutely fine, I would say late 30s. I don’t like the shoes though, sorry. Well done on the weight loss too.

shellyleppard · 05/06/2023 18:20

You look absolutely gorgeous!!! Love the dress x

Nice dress, age 42, fave pet - cat. Fav animal - alpacas.
Not keen on the trainers. Box-fresh white leather or canvas trainers would look nicer. Beige and cream ..meh.

LoisLane66 · 05/06/2023 18:31

Sorry about the moggy. No idea how it got there as I didn't do anything.

CriticalAlert · 05/06/2023 18:32

I like the bag and jacket. I'm not crazy about the dress, I don't like big print stuff, but that's just me! It seems a bit long, and may have been better with sandals? But heck if you're comfy who gives a shit? I think you look fine. I don't have a clue how old you are or your size... does it matter??

CallMeBobcat · 05/06/2023 18:35

You look great!

GoodChat · 05/06/2023 18:37

Box-fresh white leather or canvas trainers would look nicer.

The problem is that trainers are expensive and dont stay box fresh for long

Clicheaf · 04/06/2023 16:55

Fingers crossed

It’s the trainers, they need to be white. The dress looks lovely, could be a little shorter but it’s not jeans!!! My husband would be so chuffed if I appeared in this (or any!) dress! You go for it- but in sandals ir white trainers. Or try some fisherman sandals. 😊

ModestMoon · 05/06/2023 18:58

My opinion is we can't all be edgy fashionista dressers. I wear t shirt and jeans with non-sporty colourful trainers, or dresses and the same trainers when it's hot. I have a denim jacket I've had for 15 years. Its come in and out of fashion several times. My clothes look nice on me I think, they fit, I like them. It doesn't actually matter whether many other people are wearing the exact same thing or whether it's old fashioned and passe.

DetectiveDouche · 05/06/2023 18:59

I wore a long patterned dress, denim jacket and Vans yesterday to my mum’s birthday dinner. I HAD read the previous thread but it didn’t occur to me when I got dressed because, despite my tendency to overthink things usually , no were fucks given. The dress wasn’t new but I don’t wear a dress v often so felt quite dressed up in a low key way.

I have no clue about “quiet luxury” 🤷‍♀️😆 and no real desire to educate myself.

DetectiveDouche · 05/06/2023 19:01

Just seen your longer post, and want to say a big “well done” to you. What you have achieved is fantastic, and you’re going to have so much fun finding things for the “new you”. Enjoy this new time 😊.
