Went out in my new frock last night thought I looked rather okay.

I've lost loads of weight recently and feel like heading towards a New Normal Me.

But then scrolling through S&B I find I'm ubiquitous Sad

Aibu to think I should change my style ALREADY?

Also bonus points, for guess my size, age, favourite animal Wink

Where I am, only very old ladies wear white ballet pumps. I also see a lot of women looking good in solid tshirt style dresses without floral prints.

Personally, I like less billowy fabric on me.

muffinmclay22 · 05/06/2023 09:44

@Mirabai that's your opinion. It isn't a fact.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/06/2023 09:44

OP looks nicer in that dress than the model someone posted up thread.

I agree, it makes the models look gormless. After seeing it on the OP I can see it is actually a nice wearable dress.

In your opinion.

More people don't like those awful pumps

Of course it’s my opinion hence the “I”.

I don’t like the M&S pumps either.

LadyBird1973 · 05/06/2023 10:04

I quite liked the first pair of ballet pumps ( the gunmetal ones). I read somewhere that ballet pumps are coming back.

IMHO, big clumpy white trainers (AF1) are not the most flattering on all people and they (AF1) seem to be shit quality as well (every pair my kids have had have worn very quickly, even the ones DS kept for 'smart'). That said, some trainers are nicer than others to look at and are amazing for walking around all day and not knackering your feet. It is nice to see women wearing shoes that are not damaging and finally getting the comfort that men have always had.

Laureltime · 05/06/2023 10:08

I remember when ballet pumps were fashionable. I had several pairs, it was about thr 90s, early 2000’s I think. They were the white leather trainer of their day. Totally ubiquitous and everywhere.

I think women have just moved on in terms of foot comfort. Wedges and heels still have their place but less and less you see women in them during the day or for casual evenings.

LaffTaff · 05/06/2023 11:26

Ballet pumps are timeless. I wear them Spring/Autumn (though i'd never wear them with a skirt, only with skinny/cropped trousers). I've got 2 pairs just now, both gold leather, RL and a cheaper pair from Dune.

When I wear ballet pumps I might as well walk barefoot, they give my feet zero support. And I have high arched size 4 feet, so not big feet at all!

Guess you must have missed the almost annual articles in magazines like Vogue or the Sunday Times about how ballet pumps are back. These articles turn up year after year.

Here's a couple of 2023 and 2022.

I don't need validation from Vogue or The Times but I think their writers might know a bit more about what they're writing about than the posters on here confidently asserting something is out or in.

How ballet shoes went from dull to cool again

They’ve veered wildly in and out of fashion, pinging between Sloane Ranger sensible in the Eighties and Kate Moss cool in the Nineties, but these classic shoes are back — and better than ever

I see the dress is supposed to look oversized. It isn’t flattering even on the model, in my opinion. Congratulations on the healthy lifestyle change, OP, you must feel brilliant.

The models on the Anthropoligie site look lovely. The pink/ purple version in particular.

Softoprider · 05/06/2023 12:51

For what it's worth, I would not wear that outfit on a night out. I might wear it during the day for shopping or dog walking but the denim jacket isn't very nice - there are nicer ones that that and those shoes..are they from M&S? I'm sure saw them in there and wouldn't wear them. They look awful.
Well done on the weight loss.

I'm afraid that doesn't make me like them.

LadyBird1973 · 05/06/2023 13:12

Ultimately people should wear what they personally like and feel confident and comfortable in. Fashion is arbitrary - one minute we're all wearing bootleg jeans and thinking skinnies make us look like parsnips, next minute we're all in skinnies and wondering what possessed us to wear bootleg jeans that were not at all practical for British rainy weather. Remember the rising water up our jeans leg and the frayed muddy hems? It's all bollocks really.
But you can't deny that fashion exists and if looking current is important to you then you'll wear the jeans shape that is 'in' (irrespective of whether it's practical or even flattering), sane with floral dresses, ballet pumps, skinny or full eyebrows etc.
I think the people who look stylish are the ones to take elements of fashion that suit their shape and combine them with other items that flatter their bodies (even if not fashionable) and have the confidence in their own choices. They aren't afraid to inject their personality into their look with something quirky. I think that's where the dress/trainer/denim jacket look goes wrong because there's nothing personal in it - women look nice and presentable but as a look it tells you nothing about the individual.

Given their general of 'fashion' I'd be inclined to disagree.

GrinAndVomit · 05/06/2023 13:28

You need to move to my area OP. I live in a gilet heavy, countryside market town. I’ve just got in from the high street and I was the only floral dress, white denim jacket, white trainers and straw handbag wearing walking cliche in the whole place. Every other lady was in leggings/ jeans, t-shirt, trainers/ crocs and a gilet.

You’ve just got older that’s all.

It's because nobody uses it in the real world Grin

You likely would never have heard it if English was your first language!

It's funny because I don't think it's that uncommon a word or one that's everywhere.

Though now you've said it, it probably crops up on S&B because other alternatives to something being everywhere either have other undertones (eg common) or would inevitably prompt a defensive pile on (eg saying a look is overdone, become a bit of a cliche, has become associated with a particular group) as people take a discussion of a trend as a personal attack.

Don't worry it is not only you. The only and ever time I have seen it / heard it used, is here on MN.

I think its the new buzz word, look how many times it is used on this thread alone.

(probably competing with the amount of people wearing the floral dress, denim jacket and trainers)

😀

The word does go well with the lovely flowers and trainers. 😄

It certainly beats 'circle back' and those terms. if I think of another thread here, another one is ..... 'quiet luxury'

I admit I had to put ubiquitous into Google for them to tell me how to pronounce it. 😂
