Went out in my new frock last night thought I looked rather okay.

I've lost loads of weight recently and feel like heading towards a New Normal Me.

But then scrolling through S&B I find I'm ubiquitous Sad

Aibu to think I should change my style ALREADY?

Also bonus points, for guess my size, age, favourite animal Wink

Gotta love style and beauty take a perfectly well put together outfit & accessories. Posters Suggesting plasticky pumps and other alternatives as a superior substitute. The alternatives to the outfit and helpful suggestions have been overwhelmingly ghastly and inferior to the original outfit

7eleven · 05/06/2023 06:58

I see the dress is supposed to look oversized. It isn’t flattering even on the model, in my opinion. Congratulations on the healthy lifestyle change, OP, you must feel brilliant.

Damnit! I zoomed in on your phone case and went for leopard - of course it’s tortoiseshell.
I hope you slept well last night, op and wake with a smile on your face. Lovely thread. Congrats on your weight loss, you really look gorgeous. (Just don’t try to get down to 55.5kg to match your 55.5 years and 5’.5.5” height That might be too skinny!)

You're obviously nicer than me. I would notice them and think why spoil that lovely dress with such a horrible jacket and trainers. White trainers would only be a small improvement. I never liked the dress and trainers look. Sandals, any type, even clunky Birkenstock types would be much nicer.

As an alternative, equally comfortable , these M& S pumps would look nice.

M& S pumps 1

M&S Pumps 2

Oh well, if it is acceptable to be "not nice" those ballet pumps are beyond hideous.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/06/2023 07:17

I don’t think those sort of dresses are ‘supposed’ to necessarily be ‘flattering’ though, if ‘flattering’, as it often seems to on Mumsnet, is taken to mean, ‘Making somebody look slim.’ They’re surely just supposed to be a bit of a statement whilst also being pretty and comfortable. Mine was perfect yesterday, in that it kept me warm enough in the chill of the morning and then was cool in the sun whilst stopping me from burning. The pretty print was then a bonus.

I don’t like those white ballet shoes. I think they’re too delicate for the volume of the dress.

GoodChat · 05/06/2023 07:18

@NatashaDancing those pumps are horrible and very 2003

50s, size 14, dolphin

I think the trainers are all wrong for the dress. I love a dress with a denim jacket and trainers though, but not those trainers. I think the dress itself isn't the nicest shape, but it looks nice on you op :)

LadyBird1973 · 05/06/2023 07:50

Everyone is moaning about that thread, but the OP and the posters who criticised the floral dress/denim jacket/white trainers look are right - it is ubiquitous and if you are fashionably inclined, it's past time to move on.
That's not to say people look awful in it - they clearly don't and sometimes it's nice to just not stand out from the crowd. If you dress like that, you'll look nice and presentable, but not distinctive.
It's not wrong on a style and beauty board for a poster to note that it's a uniform and that it's been overdone. I don't k ow why people are taking it so personally.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 05/06/2023 07:53

That's the interesting thing about fashion. Everyone wearing it is what makes it fashionable. If you wear something else that's completely different, are you out of touch or ahead of the curve?

I agree, but the white trainers and floral dress look is ubiquitous for a reason as its usually quite flattering and comfy. The OPs huge dress and heavy trainers, bag and jacket make this look heavy and uncomfortable and not hugely flattering.

NatashaDancing · 05/06/2023 08:35

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 05/06/2023 06:48

Oh god no
Cheap ballet pumps are.so ugly Imo and really bad for your feet.

I suggested high street options rather than the ones from Pretty Ballerina I would usually wear. The M& S ones look more expensive than they are and the wide fit ones have support and padding.

As for ugly - there's no uglier footwear than trainers, in any colour.

LolaSmiles · 05/06/2023 08:38

OP looks nicer in that dress than the model someone posted up thread.
The promotional image isn't selling it at all in my opinion.

NatashaDancing · 05/06/2023 08:38

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 05/06/2023 07:35

😅

Each to their own. I think trainers are hideous. All of them - goodness knows how any one picks one ugly lump of leather and rubber over another ugly lump of leather and rubber. And they don't go with dresses.

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 05/06/2023 08:55

I was standing behind a woman at a school thing the other day. She had a long leopard print dress and a pair of what I think were NB thick soled white and cream trainers. In her 50s. She looked very modern and effortlessly cool. A pair of naff old ballet pumps would have ruined it.

Now I've seen how the dress it supposed to look I definitely think OP wears it better, too!

You can tell it's Monday morning...

GeriKellmansUpdo · 05/06/2023 09:06

I love trainers, certainly more than those ballet pumps. But I also wear trainers because I walk about 6-7 miles a day and take public transport. I don't see anyone in Central London wearing anything other than trainers, with all the walking we do.

There are lots of less chunky and sleeker options, like Onitsuka Tigers.

BriarHare · 05/06/2023 09:10

Aargh, those M&S ballet pumps linked upthread are just terrible.

Darkplaces · 05/06/2023 09:16

I love your outfit - all of it. I would wear this and I like the trainers with it too.

The best thing is you look stylish and comfortable at the same time. You could take on all the "helpful tips" from this thread, but I'm not sure it would add up to a good look.

Haha this made me laugh. The way this poster speaks as if her thoughts on trainers are actual facts yet 90% of the population definitely wear them 😂

I hate trainers too. Some are worse than others but none look great.

Laureltime · 05/06/2023 09:26

The ballet pumps are bad though. Very dated. But as the poster said, each to their own.

the ops trainers I’d Wear to the gym. I wouldn’t wear them with a dress unless I had foot problems.

I quite like the white leather plimsole trainer look with dresses though, I suspect many do which is why it’s so popular and ubiquitous now. The normal trainers and ballet pumps less so.

In your opinion.

More people don't like those awful pumps

KirstenBlest · 05/06/2023 09:34

The first ballet pumps in tan are nice. The second ones are ugly.
Trainers are ok but something like white Supergas are better with dresses.
