Went out in my new frock last night thought I looked rather okay.

I've lost loads of weight recently and feel like heading towards a New Normal Me.

But then scrolling through S&B I find I'm ubiquitous Sad

Aibu to think I should change my style ALREADY?

Also bonus points, for guess my size, age, favourite animal Wink

I just don’t get the trainers with a dress look at all.

Well you are in the minority! I was at a concert last night, around 10,000 people, and dress/trainers were definitely the style of the night!

Five years ago, I would never have worn trainers, never mind with a dress, but I really like that look! I like the trainers you are wearing @Clicheaf and in fact I have several pairs in different colours that are similar (mine are all Liu Jo). I think the dress maybe swamps you a little? I'd probably have had it taken up.

I love a denim jacket - mine is more 'pretty' in that it is collarless and is trimmed with a tweed fabric, last year's Betty Barclay.

I am known among my family and friends as being stylish (unless they are all lying to me) and I've also lost quite a bit of weight, so I feel so much better about myself.

I wouldn't pay too much heed to any of the criticism tbh - chances are you wouldn't be seen dead in the outfits some of these people would wear lol!

I did remark to my family that last night I was often given to wonder whether some people had got dressed in the dark and didn't have any mirrors in their house...!

I have no idea about your age but I'm 60 so I will say younger than me! I think you like cats.

I think you look great and I love the print

What's 'that thread' you're referring to?
A thread that seemed go round and round on the same few points:

  1. People saying they personally feel that the floral dress, trainers and denim jacket look has been around for ages, and has now become a bit of a dull uniform that's everywhere
  2. People saying they love it, it suits the., and they'll wear it regardless
  3. People claiming it's definitely not ubiquitous at all because everyone wears it so it must be stylish and if John Lewis has floral dresses then they're still wearing a very on trend look, and taking any criticism of a look very personally.

What follows is a thread or post every few days with some reference to it.

And posters who wear the floral dress, denim jacket and trainers look (great, it's in right now and lots of people like it), but on them it looks edgy and different.

Tophy124 · 04/06/2023 22:23

Hate the trainers, but otherwise you look great!! I’d put you in the 30-40s age bracket.

YayPizzaFriday · 04/06/2023 22:25

I am also in the minority then. I wore similar in the 90's but little slip-on pumps and no denim jacket. However, at the time I never saw anyone else dressed that way, I just liked the dresses I already had, and wanted comfortable feet when I was walking round.

The thing is, someone will start a way of dressing, and people pick up on it and copy it until something else takes over and it is called fashion. It's the way it is.

Shakespeareandi · 04/06/2023 22:34

You look great OP. Nice fresh clothes. I think it's just nit picking pointing out someone would wear it with sandals or lighter shade of trainers. Remember it's just someone else's opinion and you probably wouldn't care for their opinion if you met them in real life anyway. All in all, pretty much everyone look the same, wearing block colour dress and sandals instead of trainers and floral is not really any different. It's summer, most people wearing summer clothes look the same. Dresses (in varying colours, lengths and pattern) still all look similar. Denim shorts and tshirt - the same. The only people who really stand out are the ones who are really very different. Been away on holiday this week, and two women stood out to me, one lady dressed in cowboy/country western outfit and a goth. Everyone else was wearing summer outfits.

Dog - big exuberant lab/golden retriever/springer spaniel types

The trainers are not good, you need more tennis shoe type shoes with that outfit if you're going that way.

7eleven · 04/06/2023 22:51

I think the dress is too big for you.

greenspaces4peace · 04/06/2023 22:58

the trainers and the purse and maybe the jewlery. as for the trainer and purse neither are the right shade or shape.
the dress and jacket i can live with.

VWHoliday · 04/06/2023 23:17

I'm not wearing a denim jacket because all my friends wear them. We are middle aged. I just don't like to look the same.

momtoboys · 04/06/2023 23:19

I think you look great! Congratulations on the weight loss!

VWHoliday · 04/06/2023 23:20

I'm enjoying looking at other options and dressing a bit different.

PerryMenno · 04/06/2023 23:35

I don't know why you're feeling sad about it OP. Most of us take our inspiration from others and you can't possibly have missed the fact that you're wearing a very popular combination. You've chosen a particular 'it' dress and the trainers that are most recommended on here lately - why are you surprised to find out it's a ubiqitous look?

PerryMenno · 04/06/2023 23:45

Aslanplustwo · 04/06/2023 20:29

You look lovely OP. Ignore the so-called experts on this thread. On the previous threads people were falling over themselves to say that look was a uniform and everyone looked the same - on this one they are telling you your trainers/shoes/bag are wrong and you should change them so you look identical to everyone else wearing that combination. Honestly, you can't win on S&B.

I had to laugh and you're right. But I think in this case, a shorter more fitted jacket and less bulky trainers are being recommended to flatter the OP's new slimmed-down size, not to up the ubiquity factor to 100%. (Although it will do that too.)

abcchipmunk · 04/06/2023 23:49

I think the trainers make the outfit. You look great

Clicheaf · 05/06/2023 00:09

Apologies to all, the stress of attaching the photo sent me to migraine hell.

I wasn't expecting many responses.

To answer a tew questions

Yes it's anthropologie dress, didn't realise it was An It though!

I like it loose because I'm vrry self conscious of flab and have spent years hiding and tring to blend into background because of weight and self esteem and confidence issues. My mind hasn't caught up with the reality of smaller body.

Bag is Mulberry Amberley, not sure the exact colour, a pake green.

Denim jacket (yes, you were all right, it's a remnant from bigger days) is Matalan. I'll definitely update that for smaller darker and shorter, thanks for the advice.

I would normally wear Air and Grace white leather trainers, but fancied a change - I can see this was a faux pas. Oof.

I'm 55.5 and 5 foot 5.5.

Im a large 16 at the moment I reckon.

I do feel the cold, I think it's common phenomena when You've lost significant weight.

I only have 4 bags, this was the least worst colour wise. And they're all croos-body styles because I flipping love them 🥰.

Tortoise is the creature - phone case is tortoiseshell effect 😂.

Neat corners on bed is because we're in a hotel!

There's been so many lovely comments on this thread, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate them, I dint think many of you could comprehend being significantly overweight for over 40 years, and never really getting a compliment. A tenth of these comments would have seriously made my year, so thank you v to all. 💐💐💐

Also justvon a minor note , the absolute joy of being able to walk into an aspirational shop like Anthropologie and be able to buy a dress is just still incredible to me, after all yhe years of buying the largest sizes in Evans and buyung clothes because well, they just fit, well that joy is immense, it's unbelievableto me and it's indescribable.

I think I've answered most now, excuse typos, brain is still fuggy.

Night night.

A hotel! Apologies about the age thing then, that had me fooled.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/06/2023 01:19

Love the dress.

I wore a similar one today from Zara, but with sandals.

I don’t like the trainers, jacket or bag much, but if I saw you in the street I wouldn’t notice them and would just think how lovely the dress is.

slithytoveisascientist · 05/06/2023 01:26

I was going to say size 14 and 41
So hopefully that's a confidence booster

Defo need the much mentioned white trainers and smaller darker jacket

Why not take another pic no jacket and white trainers and come back for more feedback?

I think you look fab

You're obviously nicer than me. I would notice them and think why spoil that lovely dress with such a horrible jacket and trainers. White trainers would only be a small improvement. I never liked the dress and trainers look. Sandals, any type, even clunky Birkenstock types would be much nicer.

As an alternative, equally comfortable , these M& S pumps would look nice.

I love this dress - if it were going to be that length on me, I’d have bought it, but am taller and fatter than you, and it wouldn’t look the same.

Always love an Amberley too, have just bought a second one.

Congratulations on your weight loss!
