Went out in my new frock last night thought I looked rather okay.

I've lost loads of weight recently and feel like heading towards a New Normal Me.

But then scrolling through S&B I find I'm ubiquitous Sad

Aibu to think I should change my style ALREADY?

Also bonus points, for guess my size, age, favourite animal Wink

You look lovely OP. Ignore the so-called experts on this thread. On the previous threads people were falling over themselves to say that look was a uniform and everyone looked the same - on this one they are telling you your trainers/shoes/bag are wrong and you should change them so you look identical to everyone else wearing that combination. Honestly, you can't win on S&B.

Wholeheartedly agree. Style &Beauty is fickle and contradictory in the extreme

mincedtart · 04/06/2023 20:35

OP all that matters is whether you feel good in those clothes!

Please bear in mind that you’ve asked for fashion advice on an anonymous internet forum - take a cross section of random people on the street and you’ll be lucky if you find one who A) Works in fashion, and/or B) Looks stylish.

Take the advice with a pinch of salt. Especially the one to wear wedges…

Fisharejumping · 04/06/2023 20:37

Actually, I think I am going to copy this style as closely as I can. I love the trainers and the bag is super cute.

Fair enough - in that case, made in the USA. I doubt that the Chinese workforce making these dresses are paid any more or have better working conditions than those who make Pretty Little Thing crap, and I doubt that the quality is much better despite the price tag.

I also have an aversion to elastane - I can't bear the feeling of it. It makes cotton feel heavy, plus it is just wrong-feeling generally.

must be a nightmare finding swimwear

That thread is lovely!

Can you link the thread please?

DvF fabrics are really good quality and well made.

BeverlyHa · 04/06/2023 20:43

Pretty pattern on the dress. It is not a cliche, very few people wear combination of blue and white

Ha! It's fine, as I can't swim 😂

GeriKellmansUpdo · 04/06/2023 20:45

I was going to post a pic of myself wearing a Superdry bomber ( with jeans and trainers) that I am not sure whether to return or not..... but I think I will just keep it, wear it and move on with my life! I do not think it will meet standards.

Blondey2023 · 04/06/2023 20:46

I think trainers and dresses look really naff and lazy sorry, but it's not personal I just don't like it on anyone I see wearing that combo.

Having said that you look perfectly fine. You said the word "frock" so I'm guessing you're in your early fifties, no-one in my age group (early thirties) says that.

Escapetofrance · 04/06/2023 20:47

Love the dress!
I think you look about 40, although hard to tell. Favourite animal-dog?
Wear what makes you feel good. Never mind what anyone else wears or thinks.

MonumentalLentil · 04/06/2023 20:47

I saw the thread you refer to.
I also don't like the trainers with the dress. It would look better with something less clumsy, and white, plimsoles. I also detest denim jackets and would ditch it. The dress is much to pretty to spoil it with the jacket which seems to stop in an unfortunate place but might just be the photo.
I do like the dress, and it looks good on you.
I won't guess size, age and animal though 😀

mumtroubles · 04/06/2023 20:47

What’s troubling you? Cos everyone wears
frocks and jackets? They do, but so what, it’s all in the detail.

I like everything a lot apart from the dress. I might be wrong, I’m super-picky about pattern but those fronds are a bit Hawai-5-O, for me it kinda overwhelms you. It’s also not as cool the rest and slightly at odds with the subtlety of everything else. The bag is v.lovely, so’s your jewellery, you have pretty brown hands and the trainers are actually what made the outfit for me (that and the shape/colour of the bag). I’d say ‘that’s someone with style who isn’t trying too hard’ and that’s never a bad look is it?

PS I also like the bedding 😂
PPS you look about a size 12, hard to tell cos of the jacket.

midsomermurderess · 04/06/2023 17:05

Christ, not this again. Why take that thread personally? If you like it, wear it. Don't go around with a face on because other people find it dull and, yes, ubiquitous. Such self pity over buggar all.

What's 'that thread' you're referring to?

LolaSmiles · 04/06/2023 21:04

What's 'that thread' you're referring to?
A thread that seemed go round and round on the same few points:

  1. People saying they personally feel that the floral dress, trainers and denim jacket look has been around for ages, and has now become a bit of a dull uniform that's everywhere
  2. People saying they love it, it suits the., and they'll wear it regardless
  3. People claiming it's definitely not ubiquitous at all because everyone wears it so it must be stylish and if John Lewis has floral dresses then they're still wearing a very on trend look, and taking any criticism of a look very personally.

What follows is a thread or post every few days with some reference to it.

Doggolover2 · 04/06/2023 21:12

What’s S&B (apologies for my glaring middle aged woman with no idea self)? But if you feel comfortable why would you want opinions it’s obviously not a risky outfit so if you like it go for it…not really sure what the question is right enough xx

MaidOfSteel · 04/06/2023 21:12

You look great! Ignore the fashion snobs on here who say anything more than a year old is out of date. Some styles, patterns etc become perma-trends. And the midi dress is now a perma-trend. Denim jackets will always be in style, just like blazers.

Wear what suits you and makes you feel good. And congratulations on your weight loss!

Happyher · 04/06/2023 21:15

Looks great apart from the footwear. White trainers would have looked better or sandals. But each to their own.

CountessWindyBottom · 04/06/2023 21:17

Well done on your weight loss. I think you've gone for a 'look' but it hasn't quite worked. The dress itself is quite nice but should be shown off and it would be good to see the neck-line, I can't make out if it is collared or has buttons but if it was a little lower it would work. The jacket is a no-no as it is the wrong length, style and colour and doesn't go with the dress. Same with the trainers, they look very big and bulky and don't suit at all. The handbag is pretty but doesn't go with the dress. I'm assuming you're about 50, dress size 14-16 and you like terrapins.

dontgobaconmyheart · 04/06/2023 21:19

Ubiquitous and looking nice aren't mutually exclusive.

I think the dress is nice on you OP, I don't think those trainers go with it at all.

In fairness it is difficult sometimes to say you wouldn't wear what someone's shown or don't like an item they've linked without it sounding much more scathing and meaningful than it is. I wouldn't wear the outfit you're showing OP, or even buy any of the individual items actually, but that doesn't mean I've got deeply negative or snide thoughts about it or you for wearing it or that I think what I have at home is better or that I know better about fashion.

It looks nice and more importantly you like it and feel good in it, which is what we should all be aiming for in the clothing we buy and not the approval of mumsnet.

Frankly if I really wanted fashion advice this isn't a place I'd genuinely go.

Harryyourenogoodalone · 04/06/2023 21:21

You look absolutely great! Well done on the weight loss.
You look just the kind of person I'd like to spend time with.
Ignore all the nit picking!

Berlinlover · 04/06/2023 21:32

I just don’t get the trainers with a dress look at all.

OrangeFlorange · 04/06/2023 21:51

You look lovely! I'd guess size 12? Age I'd guess 38? And animal I'm going with elephants 😁

nopuppiesallowed · 04/06/2023 21:54

I love the dress! Me? I'd give the outfit a bit of zing with orange trainers (something from Superga?) and an orange cross body bag. Lift the dress collar up high, roll up the denim jacket sleeves to show some skin and add a bracelet in gold. But I love orange and gold.....
