I won't be offended, no ED or anything like that going on. I'm just wondering what size I look in this pic?

You can't tell at all from the sitting down photo.

I did this once and despite being in size 04 (us) trousers in the photo, and posting a pic of the label as this wasn't believed .... I still got told size 14 and upwards suggestions from some.

Pinkfluff76 · 01/06/2023 23:13

10-12, maybe more a 12

Theyreallydidaskthat · 01/06/2023 23:16

Hard to tell without knowing your height. You look like you have lost a lot of weight judging by the loose skin on your lower arms. If you are under 5ft I would say 14 if, you are around 5ft 6 I would say 16 to 18, purely because it looks like you carry your weight around your middle. Would it be fair to say that you are part way through a weight loss journey?

Howdidtheydothat · 01/06/2023 23:20

14-16

Howdidtheydothat · 01/06/2023 23:26

It is just not a flattering dress. Maybe ok as a beach dress to go to restaurant/bars it is v pretty but think the big puff sleeves and shoulders don’t worked with shapeless bottom half. BTW it does look lovely even if it adds a few sizes !!

Lesina · 01/06/2023 23:40

What does it matter? Honestly why does it matter so much that you asking strangers on the the internet what dice you are? And size itself is a construct designed by fashion designers. It’s meaningless. You are gorgeous. We all are :) x

it was very obvious even from the first post that the dress is exaggerating size. I immediately thought size 10 and was very surprised to see comments saying 18-20. I feel like some people would have seen this as a fishing thread and responded in ways to put the OP down in order to prove some ridiculous point.

i think the dress looks nice OP. It’s important to look good but it’s equally important to feel good so carry on!

Some of the replies on here! Jesus! Who's opened the cunt cupboard?

Right!

It's obvious the OP isn't fishing for compliments, just reality checking what she saw in the photo vs the mirror.

I don't think that style of dress (is it empire line?) where the narrowest part is right under the bust, is the best cut for a lot of women as it does make boobs look enormous and hides your actual waist where you are slimmest.

If you love the dress you could try wearing it with a fitted jacket which would tone down the bulky sleeves and give you an actual waist.

scoobydoo1971 · 02/06/2023 00:03

The dress looks like a size 14 to me, but it appears baggy on you. Not sure if that is the intended style, but from first glance I would think you were a size 12 under all that fabric? With vanity sizing, you could be a size 10 in one shop and size 14 in another.

Tootsietwo · 02/06/2023 07:34

Funnily enough, I've got a vintage C&A dress arriving from Vinted today, bought it in a size 12 without considering todays vanity sizing so I'll be very interested to see how/if it fits!

@Tootsietwo
I've got a very old pair of M&S shorts from 1994. I'm a size 10 but these are a 14 & I can't do them up.
Our local charity shop used to have a vintage section & the 10s were tiny, there's no way I'd have been size 10 back in those days!
It's interesting that people often quote that Marilyn Monroe was a size 16 but that was probably equivalent to a 10-12 then.
You look fab in that dress though.

Fairislefandango · 02/06/2023 08:35

I would have guessed 14. I'm actually a 14 and wouldn't wear a dress like that because however nice it might look on the hanger, I'd assume it would be unflattering. You can tell from the second pic that you're much slimmer, but I suspect you still look a bit less slim than you are. Not that we should all feel the need to choose our clothes on the basis of how slim they make us look!

Tootsietwo · 01/06/2023 15:42

Wow thanks for all the quick replies! Really interesting to read.

I'm a size 10 top and 12 bottom. Yes, dress from TU, size 10, gorgeous dress and I felt lovely in it but I was shocked to see how much bigger I looked in all the photos!

I'm exactly the same! From photos you would put me at a 14. But I'm an 8-10.
I hate having my photo taken x

LouisCatorze · 02/06/2023 10:15

Surely it's all about angles in photos? You are sitting down so you only really get a view of your arms and bust. Not likely to give an entirely accurate view of your size from those.

Reality checking? How does that work when random strangers are looking at 2!photos, neither of which tell the truth. OP, body checking (asking others, constantly standing on scales) is part of a disordered behaviour where your self esteem is reliant upon a number - weight or dress size.

OP must know how she feels in that dress. None of us can tell her that.

Emotionalstorm · 02/06/2023 10:46

18 or XL

@Tootsietwo

I am surprised you are a size 10/12, and can only put it down to vanity sizing. Sitting down you look size 16-18 to me, and a size 16 standing. Sizing has definitely changed.

Just for interest-here's the vintage C&A dress, size 12 and fits perfectly so I think your vanity sizing theory is incorrect.

GeriKellmansUpdo · 02/06/2023 11:23

you look very much the same size/build as me- i am a size 10-12- and the first dress seems too big, though nice colours. the c and a dress is also not very flattering because of the bow, imho!

You're massively over thinking that. I dont even know how much I weigh let alone 'constantly stand on scales' . I just wanted a strangers perspective on the dress that's all. I've got great self esteem regardless of my dress size. Doesn't mean I want to look like a size 20 though!

To be honest I don't care if its flattering or not. I bought it because its one my mum used to wear. I just posted it out of interest for those who referred to vanity sizing.

GeriKellmansUpdo · 02/06/2023 11:36

fair enough. I struggle with what to wear myself these days with all the puff sleeves and excess fabric in dresses. Today I am wearing a fitted tshirt dress and I think I will stick to very simple cuts.

MM's weight went up and down over her career but she was generally 24 inch waist and 34 inch hips. I don't think that's ever been a 16 anywhere!

I don’t think that’s always true. I have a couple of dresses from the 80s in a size 10 and I can still get into them (I’m a 10/12). Sizes vary so much across shops - I can be anything from an 8 to a 14 - and it was the same back then. I remember shopping as a teenager in the 80s and having to try on loads of things to get the sizing right.

Merryoldgoat · 03/06/2023 08:54

I’ve had size variations in the same shop - one pair of trousers fit great and same size different colour is too small/too big.

It’s just not worth getting hung up on dress sizes - better to go by how you look and feel.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 03/06/2023 09:05

Dress sizes are a bit meaningless really. I listened to a podcast on it a while ago and it makes sense why they don't make sense...of that makes sense 🤔.
