Do I bite the bullet and buy these boots?

For a few years I've wanted these boots, but I've never justified the cost! Do I bit the bullet and buy them or find an alternative?

I have two pairs of Isabel Marant Dicker boots - they’re quite similar. The first pair are probably ten years old now. I’ve had them re-heeled and re-soled and I still love them! Some things just make us feel good for years and are worth the splurge.

HarrietPoole · 30/04/2023 18:10

Ignore the mean posters who don't understand the point of your question.

They look like the sort of thing your nan would wear for a night out with her best trousers and a “nice top”.

SecretsIWouldNeverTell · 30/04/2023 18:42

I do wonder, why are SO many things people on this forum are considering buying always so expensive? And always from fancy or expensive retailers. Confused No-one ever posts about buying stuff from Tesco or New Look.

Possibly if something costs £15, unless you're on the bones of your arse you might just take a punt on it without asking the MN hivemind.

Mandyjack · 30/04/2023 19:22

Try doing a Google Lens search for something similar that's cheaper unless you are fairly well off

wheresmyshoe · 30/04/2023 19:49

They're a handmade boot by craftsmen/women who are treated with respect. They are made from a single piece of leather that has one seam up the back. When I wear mine they feel incredible on my feet, like a well fitted glove. They are immaculate after ten years of regular wear and I expect at least twenty more out of them. They are not an easily affordable or disposable item, I coveted a pair for fifteen years before I bought them, no regrets.

wentworthinmate · 30/04/2023 19:51

I love a western style, never goes out of fashion. I bet the quality of these is amazing. Do it.

LivelyBlake · 30/04/2023 19:59

RM Willliams are amazing - top quality and confortable to wear. They will last a lifetime. Go for it.

Abacusporttaco · 30/04/2023 20:02

I personally don’t like the style.

And it’s a lot of money. But to me it probably doesn’t feel like good value because I’m not keen on them. I’d happily spend that much on a quality pair of leather boots that were my style though, so I say, if you’ve been coveting them for years, fuck it. Buy them @Hop27.

LivelyBlake · 30/04/2023 20:10

You asked for alternatives earlier. Isabel Marant or Acne have nice ankle boots in that kind of price range.

Having said that, I love RM Williams and I'd love to own a pair.

Grannymammy · 30/04/2023 20:40

If you love them and have the money buy them! Life's too short, as the saying goes, but the shoes (or boots), eat the cake!

Soapyspuds · 30/04/2023 20:50

Personally I cannot see how they cost £340. Even at £140 I would call that overpriced.

But this is not about me.

I suppose it comes down to money. If you have plenty of disposably income then sure why not. If you need to think about your bank balance each month then probably not.

Isabel Marant is usually mentioned in hushed tones of reverence on here. There are several western style boots on their website, so the posts about that style not being fashionable are a bit misjudged. But it's a style of boot which is always around - sometimes it'll be very popular sometimes not.

Setting that aside, the idea that these boots will be no better quality than lookie likey supermarket boots at half or a tenth of the price isn't realistic.

If the OP likes them and can afford them, she should go for it.

Not a thread for you then. Don’t feel obliged to join. But then how would you deliver your daily ‘there’s a cost of lining crisis on you know’ clip around the head if you didn’t glom on to what ever passing thread you see. It’s like the start of the Idiot Shift.

Stripeybee · 30/04/2023 21:55

If you love them get them - I’m sure they’ll look fab x

Mrsgreen100 · 30/04/2023 21:55

Check out Zalando , saw something really similar on their site a couple of years back
half the price

My feet are also perfect. I’m 70 this year. I’ve worn stilettos, kitten heels, pointed toes, the whole lot in my life to no ill effect. The crucial thing is never wearing anything that hurts. If it hurts it’s going to damage your feet, if it doesn’t it won’t.

I like your first pair @Hop27. They’re a classic western boot that oozes quality and you’ll wear them for decades. It’s a good idea to put a rubber sole on before you wear them because they will slip.

I just turned 60 and my feet are in great shape too. I never wore flats until lockdown.... people used to ask how I walked in them but I was used to them. However since I've been wfh I've drifted into much lower footwear - platform trainers, biker boots.

I agree with you @Blossomtoes. My mother's feet bore the brunt of years of ill-fitting shoes when she was young and so she was anal about getting our feet measured, and wearing good quality shoes. I was the same with my kids. The majority of my shoes are beautiful soft Italian or Spanish leather, that are so comfy to walk in!

@Hop27 I'm sorry but I just don't like those boots!! I like something with a bit of character/something different - and they are just boring!! I'd buy a couple of pairs of lovely ones for that money.

However you might not like the last boots I bought either lol!!

The Paul Green ones are lower than the ones you’ve posted but similar in shape 😊

Those are hideous in comparison to the OP's boots

nofusspot · 30/04/2023 22:31

OP if you have been thinking about these boots for a while and have looked at other boots but keep coming back to these boots then I think those are the boots for you.

louderthan · 30/04/2023 23:06

That's a lot of money for something that looks very dated.

Lovetoplan · 30/04/2023 23:19

If you can just do it. As my elderly mother said 'you only regret what you didn't do and not what you did'. I think she was right.

And anyway people do talk about buying stuff from Tesco, etc.

It won't be from the point of view of "should I splurge £20 on this dress" but "this dress was only £20 from Tesco - can I wear it to ....."

1035tg · 01/05/2023 00:37

Let us know how they go OP! (Ps I'm reliably informed that DJs has RMW sales from time to time especially EOFY, might be worth watching out for).

PerryMenno · 01/05/2023 05:39

I'm assuming you're in Aus/NZ...

I have have an old RM Williams heeled style a bit like Maya but in suede. Bought them absolutely years ago at DFO, the RRP on them then was about $450 and I paid less than $150. So I know you love these boots and want them, but I would definitely look at the outlets and/or wait for a sale.

Mine are not particularly comfortable for all day wear. The toe box is quite hard, so my feet feel a bit bruised after a few hours. I have to wear sports socks in them for some padding - fortunately they are SUPER wide, and I have wide feet, so the socks fit OK.
