Because they scream 'old woman with crepey skin and bingo wings who thinks showing off her shoulders is somehow attractive

@pfftt fuck off with your unpleasant ageist shit .

Wow that took a turn. Do you regularly launch into expletives. For what it's worth, I'm of the age we are discussing. Sorry if cold shoulder tops are your thing. They are desperately unstylish.

DuckonaBike · 29/04/2023 16:27

Team cardigan here as well. I always need just one more cardigan.

And then fuck off some more @pfftt

There are a hundred ways a woman can look stylish and sexy that don't fall into the sad little desperate act of poking your shoulders out of holes in your top. Woman are glorious at all ages. We don't need to hide ourselves apart from our shoulders.

What is desperately stylish? Just because I’d love to know what super stylish items you would consider the done and appropriate thing?

Bras Grin
Unlike most mumsnetters I don't have oversized boobs and don't find bras uncomfortable.

I don't turn into a sweaty mess if I wear polyester or viscose.

The worst threads for unpleasantness are the trainer threads. The sneering on there is depressing. Although, I don't tend to view trainers as a fashion item. I view them as practical and comfortable footwear.

JaneJeffer · 29/04/2023 16:38

Well you've changed your tune!

pfftt · 29/04/2023 16:39

@Kanaloa if you like your upper body then an elegant boat neck or even a slight off one shoulder can look chic. Shoulders poking out of holes so you can hide the rest of your hideous old lady body ( not what I think but what people seem to feel older women should do), is not chic. Wear lovely clothes. Don't feel you need to hide. The whole idea that the only thing women feel attractive about them when they get older are the tops of their shoulders is so sad.

You could have just said you find cold shoulder tops are all or any of " ugly/ unattractive/ boring/ too try hard/ not stylish/ odd looking/ unoriginal " There was no need to add your unpleasant, ageist comment.

RampantIvy · 29/04/2023 16:42

Well, this has escalated.

Yes, what lovely clothes? Obviously cold shoulder tops are disgusting so what ‘lovely clothes’ should people be wearing?’

Must add ‘elegant boat neck’ to the list alongside crisp white shirts and casual blazers for things people on mumsnet think are so trendy when in fact it just makes you look hopelessly boring and like you don’t know much about any type of fashion other than the ‘looking expensive’ or ‘French girl’ threads.

And for what it’s worth I’m not even 30. So I don’t think it’s got anything to do with what ‘older women’ should do.

Kanaloa · 29/04/2023 16:45

It’s also a bit amusing to hear someone denigrate any item as ‘desperately unstylish’ and then suggest an ‘elegant boat neck’ as if that’s the epitome of cutting edge style.

pfftt · 29/04/2023 16:45

@Kanaloa in our 60s I would think the vast majority of women would love to look elegant. Not sure why this is some sort of insult. Didn't realise elegance and boring were bedfellows. Some of the most elegant women I have known have also been the most trend setting.

You're backtracking. What you said was

Because they scream 'old woman with crepey skin and bingo wings who thinks showing off her shoulders is somehow attractive

Are you now trying to say you really meant something like

Because they scream that the wearer thinks she's an unattractive 'old woman with crepey skin and bingo wings who thinks showing off her shoulders is somehow attractive

JaneJeffer · 29/04/2023 16:47

Try not taking it out of context. The piece you have quoted is what I am saying society tells us women. Good grief your comprehension skills are completely lacking.

Yes, in what ‘lovely clothes’ that would be so much better than the ‘desperately unstylish’ cold shoulder top? What desperately stylish items?

This is the exact problem I referenced on the first page. The sneering and snobbery a lot of S&B posters feel because they think they know so much about fashion when in fact they are attracted to a very tiny and specific niche of dressing exactly like a minor royal who is trying to look relatable. They then think anyone not dying to find an elegant boat neck is desperately unstylish when in fact it is them who have very little understanding of style and fashion.

No, you’re right, style is generally distinctive. So I suppose that means you don’t understand style OR trends.

Speaking of the lack of comprehension skills. Did you not read and understand the OP ?

Ok @pfftt there's your full sentence. It's no better.
