I LOVE a dipped hem!

Do I need to say *light-hearted? 🤣

Goth. Much hated, often ridiculed. I love doing the school run in platforms (fuck ever wearing heels, platforms are flat!), billowy long skirts or flares. Just so comfy. Recently been told I "always look so put together" which was a nice surprise.

CrispThief · 29/04/2023 07:19

I enjoy clothes and fashion.

Grew up with artist parents so absolutely appreciate creativity and craftsmanship but could never afford expensive stuff.

But I always wonder, why is fashion an artform whose new output is always by and large accepted by its fans and rarely critiqued? Visual and performing arts are far more fiercely judged by their own fans.

Perhaps I'm only saying this because as a lover of colour and pattern, I can't get with the very grown up, inoffensive beige that's everywhere now. I thought the dire economic state of the country might have inspired fashion to bring us joy. Perhaps the subconscious message is supposed to be "get back to the office".

WillowtreeHouse · 29/04/2023 07:33

I love my skinny jeans!

Last night I went out in skinny jeans, 'nice' top and heels.

I felt great and I don't care! 😁

Oh and I've always loved ballet flats but mine have been hidden away for fear of being run out of my village by pitchfork wielding fashionable mums, but they're back! The shops are full of 'em.

I love cheap clothes because they don’t do vanity sizing.
”Good” brands on here like Me&Em, Hush, Whistles just swamp me and make be look 5 x bigger than I am.
I love a waterfall collar
Plain clothes only - absolutely no print.

Strangelisa · 29/04/2023 07:43

I love my Pandora bracelet. And my Hunter wellies and my Barbour jacket.

Usernamen · 29/04/2023 07:52

Denim jacket
Leather jacket
Crop tops
Uggs

I didn’t know these things were hated until I saw this thread, but I love them.

TheMildManneredMilitant · 29/04/2023 07:56

Tights. Apparently they give everyone else thrush.

I also have an iron and use it.

merrymelodies · 29/04/2023 08:43

Skinny jeans with flat heeled shoes. Usually with a nice t-shirt tucked in jeans and a leather belt.

I used to have gorgeous denim dungarees from Gap. I wore them with spaghetti strap vests and platform trainers in summer. I’ve been searching for a new pair but no luck yet. Surprisingly hard thing to come by when you have a sort of long torso but short legs!

I got some fantastic denim dungarees in the fatface sale the other day. They are very classic and lovely soft denim.

I am also short of leg , and these have drawn a lot of compliments ( I've worn them every day since I bought them 🤣)

I also love my pandora bracelet. It's has two lovely charms on it and I love it. This appears to be very divisive on MN and I clearly remember some charmer stating that they were for 'the more common among us, of which I am not one'. Okie dokie then love ... 🤣

Viscose.
Tailored skirts and jackets and high heels for work. Dated be damned. There aren't enough women in my work for there to be a style consensus but we almost all wear heels.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/04/2023 09:42

I still like my skinny jeans and mom jeans.
Still like short skirts.
I don't really do fashion. I just like things that suit me and my shape.

I also love a cold shoulder top. I think they make me look really soft and pretty and summery. I also like cropped tops, vans, crocs, loud type clothes.

Not to criticise or be mean about it because I don’t mean it that way AT ALL, but quite often on S&B I think the advice/common things said are a bit dated or not quite with the times. I saw one recently with people insisting low checkered vans were so outdated etc and should be worn barefoot if they must be worn at all. But actually amongst most of the young trendy types I know they’re worn often and always with socks, usually sports branded, because they’re back in style. It seems sometimes that if you don’t want to wear a flattering slim leg jean with a ‘crisp’ white shirt and veja trainers, along with a ‘funky’ scarf and/or a ‘simple’ necklace (all in ‘good’ fabrics of course) then you don’t get fashion. But in fact I think it’s just that S&B often attracts a very particular type of style rather than people widely interested in different types of fashion.

You forgot the ubiquitous blazer on your list ! 🤣

WesterChick · 29/04/2023 09:47

I am partial to a big Primark haul. I think people on here are obsessed with the concept of 'simple quality basics' but a £5 tee from Primark looks the same as an American Vintage £60 person.

And I love polyester and actively seek it out for some items as it washes and dries easily and doesn't need ironing.

MrsColinRobinson · 29/04/2023 09:54

Absolutely anything I want because I'm nearly 50 and know what I like, regardless of others dictating what's "in" currently.

This often means I wear the following, often ridiculed here, which seems very school bullyish to me. Aren't we all past that by now?

Cardigans - always have a good selection of styles. I get cold!
Skinny jeans
Breton tops
Heels - not the chunky type either
And apparently the ultimate crime...Boden dresses. I have loads, some well over ten years old.

TheWildOnesRunningWithTheDogs · 29/04/2023 09:57

@WesterChick yes! The obsession with natural fibres on here is mad. I have polyester tops from 1999 that still look great, while newer cotton ones died long ago.

We have one of those near me! I’ve actually never been inside because I thought it looked quite expensive 😂 might have to have a browse… why is so much stuff made for the tall people! I would like a new pair before summer comes in.

Oh my god, how humiliating! I’m embarrassed. OF COURSE you sling on a ‘casual’ blazer in a ‘good fabric’ over your crisp white shirt to ‘bring it all together, making sure your ‘subtly highlighted’ hair in a natural colour falls over one shoulder of the blazer.

In absolute fairness, waking up in the morning gives people on mumsnet thrush. As well as wearing underwear, going commando, eating meat, being vegetarian, showering, bathing, not washing enough, using bath products, washing with only water, wearing tights, wearing bare legs, having sex, peeing, holding your pee, using public bathrooms, refusing to use public bathrooms, drinking too much water, not drinking enough, and seeing a member of the opposite sex across the road.

I don't take any stylist advice off S&B my 10 year old DD has better fashion sense and advice. Most look incredibly boring and frumpy.
