Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

You know what, the green sleeveless top very much suits you.

You have a great figure, you could wear anything.

Sequin top looks great too but would look best with a bit more formal black trousers instead of jeans.

The red top would look good with a short or knee length black skirt.

The other two, your original picks, are not flattering because they just look so dated and the cut is just not nice, they don’t do anything.

I think the green sleeveless is the one. Green or black sandals would look so cute with it. Keep us posted what you decide.

OldGrannyish · 27/04/2023 15:51

Do you not have friends? 🤔I thought I did. But I've never heard of any of them having a birthday party apart from this couple. DH went alone to their party ten years ago.

Do you not feel like you deserve to look nice in beautiful clothes? Well, clearly I wouldn't know where to find beautiful clothes anyway so the question is moot! I try to aim for the not feeling like a complete idiot.

formal black trousers I've been reliably informed that anything other than bootcut looks ridiculous on me. I don't have any skirts, there's the legs issue and trying to find shoes which don't look daft.

@EllaPaella where do you find high waisted trousers when you're different hip/waist sizes? They just gape.

@souranddoughy I absolutely love that Jigsaw dress (she says, desperately hoping its also in gold and that someone will throw a party soon....)

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/04/2023 15:05

50th? Nope. 70th maybe. Sorry op, they are both seriously frump-central. There are so nice tops out there - and these are not two of them

🤣🤣🤣

EllaPaella · 27/04/2023 16:13

@OldGrannyish you are pear shaped so you actually a high waist should be ideal for you. A google search of 'high waisted trousers for pear shapes' will probably throw up some labels that are cut with a smaller waist and wider hip.
Whoever told you that you look ridiculous in anything other than bootcut I'm afraid is not someone you need to be taking style advice from. It does seem you have low confidence and haven't really found your own style. If you can afford to treat yourself a style and colour analysis would really help you to find clothes that you love.

EllaPaella · 27/04/2023 16:17

Looking at the photos again- the blouse needs tucking in, preferably to a high waist trouser, sleeves rolled slightly. Add some jewellery, and you could make the blouse work but the way you are wearing it in the photo it just looks shapeless and dull.
Same with the green top.

ilikeeggs · 27/04/2023 16:28

Out of the photos you posted I like the red top the most. It wouldn’t work with purple shoes though. You have a great figure, if I were you I’d be a bit more adventurous and try a dress.

KillerSandy · 27/04/2023 16:33

Honest to God I cannot believe this thread has gone on so long.

Georgieporgie29 · 27/04/2023 16:40

I prefer the sparkly top. Think it would like nice with a black blazer.

2nd vote would be the red one.

ultimately, you want something that you feel comfortable in.

I can’t believe how horrible some posters are being to the op. You obviously lack self esteem and I’m sorry you feel like that because you have a lovely figure. I think what would suit your figure would be a midi dress with black tights and boots with a cardigan or a jacket.

HappyTrance · 27/04/2023 16:45

I think the sequin top is best.

I agree with the pp there that you would suit a midi dress and boots!

souranddoughy · 27/04/2023 17:03

nopuppiesallowed · 27/04/2023 16:01

@souranddoughy I absolutely love that Jigsaw dress (she says, desperately hoping its also in gold and that someone will throw a party soon....)

Same here, and I definitely don’t have the occasion for it! 😂

Duchessofmuchness · 27/04/2023 17:06

I like the sparkly one , red one and green. But they need to be tucked in and then wear a belt with your jeans. Where they are sitting now is hiding your figure because ending at your widest point. You have lovely hair and hair length and suit the colours.

Some of the pp are being v unkind. Not everyone goes out to parties snd just because you don't , doesn't mean there is anything wrong!

MysteryBelle · 27/04/2023 17:16

Ok. Whoever ‘reliably’ told you that you look ridiculous in anything other than bootcut jeans is a malicious liar. Who told you that?

And since everything else you criticized yourself for is not true either, I’m not sure I believe you on the ‘chunky shapeless legs’. Because: you don’t have to have a belly, if you do, it’s very minuscule and tiny. Your legs are not standard, they’re long. You’re kind of a pear shape but it’s not exaggerated at all, your shoulders, bust, waist and hips, are a 10. You have a beautiful A+ figure. I mean, surely you know this. You don’t have any figure flaws, please tell me you know this.

You’re young and hot. Why are you speaking about yourself in such demeaning ways? With a bod like that, your self confidence should not be an issue.

Show off your shape and don’t cover up from head to toe. Since none of us know you, you can be assured that we have no agendas and are telling you the truth, unlike whoever is telling you in real life a bunch of lies.

Blip · 27/04/2023 17:17

Of your tops I vote for the red to wear with silver accessories. The colour is super on you.

Blip · 27/04/2023 17:18

Agree that you have a lovely figure OP

souranddoughy · 27/04/2023 17:26

This is good

CreamTeaThievery · 27/04/2023 17:36

You have a lovely figure and I vote for the sparkly blue top for the party.

Hope you have a fabulous time and feel confident.

awaynboilyurheid · 27/04/2023 17:48

Sparkles or red look great on you! but red might be a bit Christmassy! Glad you may have finally got something, must be one of the longest threads ever!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 27/04/2023 17:49

If I were you I’d go for the red top.

But I honestly would go somewhere like Selfridges or John Lewis and see what they suggest with a personal shopper and then go from there.

You need to invest in high waisted jeans and find your confidence.

I do find most of the tops “safe” as @EllaPaella says, the first and last I’d wear at weekends or to family lunches, not to a party!

Actually when I was slightly younger than you I worked with 2 bitches who behind my back said I had a lardy arse! It was only when I was in Gap (naice area of London) trying on boyfriend denim shorts that I realised I had a good figure (a woman in the changing room next to me told me I looked great), same in a nearby Top Shop with their high waisted jeans (the SA and a customer told me I looked great and as jeans had stretch they’d stretch, they did). Plus I had a friend then who loved clothes (glam and Ted Baker type dresses) but when she saw me in eg well fitting black trousers, gorgeous little black dress (Monsoon and Top Shop for the record) she realised we had different styles!

MysteryBelle · 27/04/2023 18:06

I like this!

Mirabai · 27/04/2023 18:12

I like the purple sequin top best on you but the red also looks really nice.

I don’t think those jeans do anything for you though. I suspect the person who “reliably informed” you that “anything other than bootcut looks ridiculous” was either your DH or a mate used to seeing you in the same shape.

Actually, black formal trousers would suit you either straight or flared.

MysteryBelle · 27/04/2023 18:35

I agree re the black bootcut jeans. I’d throw them in the trash can and not look back. They look too lowbrow (trying to think of right word) on your nice figure.

Black formal trousers, or simply fabric used office trousers so can be dressed up or down, would be 100 steps up, straight, flared, subtle wide leg, would all look good.

The black bootcut jeans look suited to a dirt track raceway to see cars go round the oval w red solo cups of beer. Or to a country line dance club. In the mid 80s/90s. Is that really you? I doubt it.

The purple DMs. Why? What do those do for you? Nothing. Now if you paired those with a short black skirt then yes that might be nice. But the bulbous front echoes clown shoes reinforced by the purple color.

Black velvet wedge sandals with formal back trousers w either the green, red, or purple sequin top. No cardigan! A silk or very daintily knit wrap. Accessorize with bracelets and earrings and a cute envelope clutch.

How cute are these?!

MysteryBelle · 27/04/2023 18:46

@blip’s black top with the sheer short sleeves would look gorgeous with black trousers. You do have to be careful pairing bright colors with black trousers. It can look dated. Although I love the red top, green sleeveless, and the purple sequin and think those will look great on you.

MysteryBelle · 27/04/2023 18:57

If it were me, I’d go for the black top with sheer short sleeves Blip posted, black trousers with a very slight wide leg and black velvet/suede strappy wedge sandals. I like dainty jewelry so very dainty bracelets and dainty dangling earrings. Silver sequin envelope clutch. Now I don’t know anything about cutting edge trends, but an outfit flattering to your figure and style, a bit of a classic silhouette with a modern touch, with no exaggerated current fads, you can’t really go wrong. Ask yourself what you truly like, what suits your true style and figure, not what you think other people will say you look ridiculous or out of place.
