Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Honestly? Neither.

SeanMean · 22/04/2023 15:02

Definitely neither.

There are much nicer clothes out there!

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/04/2023 15:05

50th? Nope. 70th maybe. Sorry op, they are both seriously frump-central. There are so nice tops out there - and these are not two of them

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 15:08

There are much nicer clothes out there!. Where 😫I hate shopping! And am clearly useless at it.

Do you have both tops already or looking to buy one?

It all depends on what you are doing for the friends birthday really. They certainly don't suit a party.

Niftythrifter · 22/04/2023 15:10

@OldGrannyish size? Shape? Colours you like? What are you wearing it with?

mikado1 · 22/04/2023 15:13

It's a no from me also. Would you have a look at Other Stories? All the tops I've admired on people recently have been from there!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/04/2023 15:15

Both are grannyish.
Neither are at all celebratory!
(And I'm in my 50s).

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 15:17

I "have" both but can send back.

Its a buffet with seating rather than a sit down meal in a new trendy pub place in the city. Might be dancing.

I have black (bootcut) jeans. Nothing tight, needs to hide a belly Blush Size 8-10. can't wear yellow or synthetic fabrics.

Niftythrifter · 22/04/2023 15:17

Ok, to wear with black jeans, I will have a hunt. Please consider ditching the cardigan too @OldGrannyish

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 15:20

What do you wear when you're cold then?

OP posts:
Ravageur · 22/04/2023 15:20

No 1 - no

No 2 - no

hth 😂

gingercat02 · 22/04/2023 15:20

2 is way better but neither scream birthday party to me

Niftythrifter · 22/04/2023 15:21

This is pretty and perfect for summer.

ThatFraggle · 22/04/2023 15:21

The first looks like a care home uniform. Or what the PA wears to the office on Tuesdays. She's retiring next year. The next pic is what she wears to watch her grandson play football in on Saturdays.

A single colour is almost always classier.

Out of curiosity, why can't you wear synthetic?

Niftythrifter · 22/04/2023 15:22

@OldGrannyish get the top sorted and then consider what to wear on top because you could have a perfectly nice top that is ruined by a cardigan.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 15:23

@ThatFraggle sweat/stink

TedMullins · 22/04/2023 15:23

Oh god no not either! Sorry OP but they look like 90s supermarket uniforms. Have a look at Zara or Other Stories for nice patterned shirts if that’s what you’re looking for. I don’t really shop in M&S but last time I looked they had decent summery blouses. I’d also say ditch the cardigan and try a leather jacket or blazer instead

BHRK · 22/04/2023 15:23

They are both awful. Sorry.
Look at Other Stories, Hush, Autograph, Oliver Bonas

BHRK · 22/04/2023 15:25

Also, definitely ditch the cardi!

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 15:25

@Niftythrifter I'm not sure I'm a puffy sleeve person (which is why I dislike that long sleeved one DH thinks looks good....) and I don't want to show people my belly. I'm 42 btw.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 22/04/2023 15:26

The second one is better than the first. That's all I'm saying.

RuthW · 22/04/2023 15:26

The second one os a bit better. The first one is work wear. Neither with black jeans as the top is navy.
