So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

The trouser suit isn't in any way a sensible replacement for a summer dress, is it?

I spoke to my mum about this yesterday and she says she dressed me in shirred bodice summer dresses she made herself in various lengths depending on how fast I was growing at the time, and white plimsolls as a child.

She says it's a standard summer perennial and suggested that "Audrey Hepburn or somebody like that " may have started it.

Why listen to people who claim to be the spokes person for fashion in these magazine articles? Fashion is great but also fickle. It just goes round and round. There is so much choice on a global scale, there is no need to listen to these snooty so-called fashion gurus in magazine articles.

and no usable changing rooms.

All the shops in our local shopping mall have changing rooms, and most have larger more accessible ones as well @JaneFondue (love the user name)

I listen to everyone @Wiseflower but I don't do anything on just their say so! Grin They're not the boss of me. Wink

I think they'd have more luck with their fashion decrees in a different season perhaps?

I won't boil in a trouser suit for fashion.

As soon as a dress and trainers is the best thing for me to wear for the climate, and my day I will be wearing it.

Mama didn't raise no fashion victim.

I used to love cargo skirts. So comfortable, hid milk bottle legs, useful pockets. I just don’t think they’ll work on my 59 something size 14 body!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2023 12:29

50 not 59

I’m on the lookout for a cargo skirt for summer. The only ones I’ve seen so far are extremely short.

Riverlee · 11/04/2023 12:47

I read recently that midi and maxi skirts, and denim skirts will be the new fashion this summer.

I’m on the lookout for a cargo skirt for summer. The only ones I’ve seen so far are extremely short.

The one I saw yesterday but didn’t seem to be of heavy material, maybe with a black dragon or writing on some of it, but with the drawstring maybe slightly asymmetric hem.

I got a nice short sleeved/sleeveless blue and white chevron midi dress from Zara last year which I could wear with trainers.

Same with a Sugarhill blues zebra print midi skirt and Jigsaw blue stripes asymmetric hemline midi skirt - both bought over lockdown I think. Will wear the latter with an old Jigsaw knit navy short sleeved top. I’ve got other options now though, black T-shirts, navy T-shirts (both Tu), navy with white Breton stripes (again Tu) T-shirts - I find I suit the latter Breton combo better than other way around these days, more slimming?!

I met DM for lunch the other day and we counted the amount of striped (Breton and otherwise) tops and T-shirts we saw, it’s either never gone away or is fashionable again!

I’m covered then! Got a knee length stretch denim pencil skirt (cheap) and midi/maxi buttoned denim skirt (Levi’s) that plus midis mentioned.

Daffodilwoman · 11/04/2023 13:07

I no longer own any Breton tops but I do like them.
I’m currently wearing a floral midi dress (it classes as a midi but it’s not that long) with tights and my black work shoes. Teamed with a bright cardi as the temperature fluctuates so much.

Can anyone recommend white trainers that actually stay white for longer than a week? I love the low profile of my Supergas but they are filthy and impossible to clean.

Where I am, they are packed with really long lines or terrible mirrors/lighting.

I find with white trainers, fabric ones if they’re like the Supergas you have, attract more dirt.

I find the material of eg AF1, Stan Smiths don’t attract as much dirt.

Also, you have to remember to spray them first or every so often with a fabric protector spray, I use Crep Protect. I do this with every trainers, suede/nubuck, coloured etc.

And I know it sounds common sense but avoid really muddy places.

Oh man, what happend to this thread. I was going to take 30min away from my inbox and looked forward to some light hearted clothes inspo. And it has turned into this huge debate🙄

Happyhappyeveryday · 11/04/2023 14:47

I like midi and maxi dresses(floral or plain) with western boots, then chunky sandals, clogs or mules/flip flops as the weather warms. I also like a t-shirt or vest with a slip skirt, then add the jacket you’d wear with the dress - denim jacket, blazer or leather jacket. In terms of trousers - jeans, combats, wide leg linen or chinos with t-shirt, vest and/or blue, white, cream or black linen or cotton shirt. Also (Daisy Jones style) 70s smock tops and flared jeans. I am 50 and will be wearing all of these. I love spring/summer style.

handsoffate · 11/04/2023 14:50

Thanks @Wiseflower that New Look skirt is exactly what I’m after.

ah, that's great! They come in Petite size too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2023 14:59

I like the New Look skirt in green (would like it even more in black) and like the fact that it's cotton. Obviously the thing to wear it with is a cropped tightly fitting vest though, so not sure how to make to work when that's clearly not an option!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 11/04/2023 15:01

I love the idea of a long denim skirt, I've bought a few through the years but they have never been quite right. Kinda kicking myself for selling on the long Moto Topshop one I had as it was amazing quality, really heavy denim and maxi length, but it didn't have a split and I've got a long stride. Wondering if I take a punt on the Zara one...

WesterChick · 11/04/2023 15:02

I think hold fire on denim skirts as more will appear rapidly. I'm hoping Levi's do a really good one, properly low slung and long.

I have a stretchy mid blue denim midi skirt with back slit and elastics red waistband from River Island I got last yr but it doesn't suit me, I want longer and less clingy.

I'd wear it with a raglan sleeve t shirt, think that would look cool.
