Have you had your colours done? What did you think?

I always said I'd never do it as I associate it with women in huge bright patterns and chunky necklaces. No idea why!

But decided to bite the bullet after realising my wardrobe is just every colour under the sun

I was surprised to be a deep/dark autumn. No idea I was surprised tbh but I was

It makes sense now I think about it more but I definitely wanted to be a bright summer or something!

Get a Philips Lumea, I used to get terrible shaving rashes from thick hair on my bikini line, and now the hair hardly grows there at all. I only used it a few times too.

TheMatriarchy · 07/03/2023 21:59

Oops wrong thread!

House of Colour for me. I knew I would be an Autumn (auburn hair, hazel eyes), but I was totally stuck in a rut wearing either brown or green.
I went for an in-person consultation at her house. It was a total revelation - I was given a wallet of swatches with about 20-30 colours. I can wear so many more colours than I realised, including tomato red which looks stunning. I would never have known.
I went for a second consultation with her about clothing styles, e.g. I now know 'boxy' shapes don't suit me, so I look for jackets with rounded corners, and as I am short waisted I can't wear anything that emphasises the mid-top instead of the neckline.

It has saved me a fortune in buying the wrong clothes. I would totally recommend it to everyone. Even if it seems pricy it is worth it.

If you have dyed hair, the consultant covers your hair with a scarf and just works by looking at your eyes and bare skin.

I had my colours done and I love it! It has encouraged me to experiment more with colour and stop wearing so much black. (Although black is one of my colours!)

squeak52 · 07/03/2023 22:07

I'm really interested in this but wondering how it would work with me because I'm super pale so use gradual tan drops every other day to give me warmer glow (I look half dead otherwise) - but I guess this would change my natural colouring a bit?

ODFOx · 07/03/2023 22:08

I had it done in the late 80s/early 90s.
I think the categories have changed slightly since then but autumn (as it was) has seen me right for over 30 years.
I veer into spring in the sunny months as I do love a burnt orange , but mostly the old rules suit me.

mintich · 07/03/2023 22:08

@squeak52 it's all about your undertone so you won't shift season even with a tan

Puffalicious · 07/03/2023 22:09

BatFaceOwl · 07/03/2023 21:54

@Puffalicious clearly I'm no expert but I'd hazard a guess that you're a bright spring

Ooooh-i think you DO sound like an expert. I'm going to take your word for it 🤣👍 👏

That's interesting! I can wear other colours with a tan, not many but some.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/03/2023 22:14

Loads of my family members have had this done by a particular lady in NZ and they all look great in the colours she has suggested so I am very tempted.

Alas I am poor atm so it will have to wait. I'd quite like the consultation that includes clothing shapes.

mrwalkensir · 07/03/2023 22:19

Friend thought it was rubbish. I'm a full on winter. I said to her "imagine me wearing peach". "Ah..." she said.

handsoffate · 07/03/2023 22:22

I’ve done both the colour and style sessions, it’s saved me a fortune in wrong purchases and I get compliments, which never used to happen. I’m a cool winter, so look ill in anything even remotely warm-toned.
I’ve also gone shopping with the consultant, which was brilliant and fun. She asked for my budget and we raced around a city centre trying lots of shops that I wouldn’t usually go in.

BatFaceOwl · 07/03/2023 22:23

@Puffalicious well I'm a relatively new expert so please do allow me a little slack. Because you could also be a summer err something!

But I'm confident with bright spring Grin

I've googled. I think you're bang on! Although I only look good in a true, bright yellow and far better with a tan (and not mustard) and I'd never buy purple, but maybe I should try!

Ooh thanks.

In my eyes you're THE expert 😆

NCSQ · 07/03/2023 22:27

I know exactly what you mean about the chunky necklaces - I also think air hostess scarves. However, done well I think it is brilliant. Especially for those that were wearing the 'wrong' colours to begin with. It can be a total game changer.

Sarain · 07/03/2023 20:51

@Fellsidefeather would you share her contact details pls?

I’ve sent you a pm.

BatFaceOwl · 07/03/2023 22:29

@NCSQ there can be a touch of overkill with the consultants that's for sure. Scarves at jaunty angles and quite a lot of animal print or really noticeable colour which isn't me at all.

Also I chose the (HoC) consultant by looking through the bios on their website until I found someone I liked the look and sound of. And without jaunty scarves… Grin

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 07/03/2023 22:43

Had mine done 32 yrs ago 😱

Tbh it was one of the best bday presents exH ever got me.

I'm not a clothes person - happier in jeans and a jumper - but I can confidently pick out WHICH colour jumper - and which scarf to wear with it !

YourTruthorMine · 07/03/2023 22:57

I worked out mine from an old house of color book, and the palettes are all over the internet, so it can be done without spending money on a consultant. I'm a bright spring, green eyes with flecks of gold and medium, warm brown hair. I wear all the bright colours, but I'm not ditching black for anyone

Rebel2 · 07/03/2023 22:59

Have absolutely no idea which I am. Been typed as warm spring, autumn and winter so... Grin
I suit navy and most greens
Never pastels, yellow, orange, red or pink

I do want tk get this done, any recommendations for in the NW?

Same! Wonder if we can get a Mumsnet deal for a BOGOF ?!

Normandy144 · 07/03/2023 23:05

I had mine done with House of Colour too. It was a revelation. I was stuck in a rut and fed up of buying things which couldn't be paired together or go. I think if you can afford it I would go for an in person consultation - online can't really replicate the right conditions - you need lots of natural light, and your hair is covered up under a white cap. I needed some direction and I honestly didn't know what colours suited me. I bought a lot of khaki and black which are definitely not my colours! It's saved me a lot of money. I don't make rash purchases any more. I evaluate items more carefully and only buy something if I think it's really worth it. Its also worth bearing in mind that you don't have to dress in chunky necklaces and scarves etc, it is possible to take the advice on which colours suit you best and interpret in your own way.

ehb102 · 07/03/2023 23:39

My House of Colour consultant was fab. Having just gone 40 I wanted to up my game a little. The Swatch draping was so interesting. I watched my friend first and then saw myself in the mirror. I'm a Spring. Put a winter colour next to me - five years on, urgh, take it away! Put a Spring colour next to me - five years off! The makeup I use is their 90 second make up, which is all I can be bothered with. Lipstick rather than eyes was a departure for me, but it works.

It has mostly given me new eyes to look at clothes. I looked at my own wardrobe and realised the garment's that got me compliments were the ones with Spring colours in. I have a red coat now instead of a black one. I have a Kelly green bag too, I would never have done that before.
