Have you had your colours done? What did you think?

I always said I'd never do it as I associate it with women in huge bright patterns and chunky necklaces. No idea why!

But decided to bite the bullet after realising my wardrobe is just every colour under the sun

I was surprised to be a deep/dark autumn. No idea I was surprised tbh but I was

It makes sense now I think about it more but I definitely wanted to be a bright summer or something!

Ever curious, I just downloaded a couple of apps to have a go and see if they were any good . Low and behold, they all seemed to agree (based on numerous pictures I uploaded) that I am a Deep Winter.

I had no idea about this, but turns out I've been wearing the right colours for myself.

I have just screenshot a palette to have a rummage around my wardrobe tomorrow,..

Might be worth a try for anyone dabbling! Search 'my colours' in the App Store, and there are various apps.

@polkapolkadot

I had no idea about this, but turns out I've been wearing the right colours for myself.

I think the world is divided between people who stay within their own colour palette naturally and can't see what the issue is... and people like me who understand the theory and would love to do it instinctively, but need a bit of help to find their own colours.

My mother and elder sister both knew their colours and I followed one or the other. They poopooed my talk about colour and style analysis but couldn't deny that I had finally 'worked out what to do' for myself.

CheerfulYank · 08/03/2023 03:01

I used this website and did them myself colorwise.me/self-analysis

It says I’m a “soft summer” and although it wasn’t what I would have chosen, I did realize that I’m wearing purple/pink/pale blue in all my favorite pictures of myself. So it holds up.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 08/03/2023 03:12

I'm interested in the colours thing but I don't get what happens if you don't stick to your natural features, for example I naturally have dark cool toned hair and pale skin, but my skin has neutral undertones and my eye colour is very warm, I like to have a golden glow and golden brown highlights in my hair.

I am self diagnosed, never seen an expert, but I do think I shift from my 'normal' palette (deep autumn) to one of the neighbouring ones when I mess around with my hair and skin tone. E.g. in summer with a tan and blonder hair I suit more muted colours from the true/soft autumn palettes and can get away with white in a pinch. When I'm paler and with ashy toner in my hair I suit the jewel colours for winters.

VenusClapTrap · 08/03/2023 07:54

I’ve fancied doing this for years. It can make such a difference when you know what suits you. I once wandered into a lingerie shop in Bath with some friends, and idly picked up a swimming costume while friend tried on bras.

The assistant whisked the costume off me and said “no no, not your shape, the lines are wrong for you. Short body high waist - you need lengthening. Halter necks, deep V.” And she picked out half a dozen costumes I’d never have chosen and I found myself in the fitting room. It was a revelation! I didn’t even need any swimwear, but bought two, and I’ve stuck with that style ever since.

I bet she’d be good at colours too.

As well as having my colours done, I also have had my body shape done and go twice a year to a a lady in Berkshire (even though I live in the north west) who orders in clothes for me to try at hers. It is fabulous. The clothes are a mixture of inexpensive & slightly more expensive brands and I pay her for the time she spends shopping on my behalf and the time I spend with her trying them on. It’s amazing and costs me less than shopping used to do as I have a small wardrobe of clothes that I love to wear and I literally don’t spend money on clothes between sessions.
I have had significant health issues in the last few years and gained a lot of weight whilst unable to exercise and there has been some stress overeating too. I was starting to hate getting invites to parties, weddings etc as I wasn’t slim and couldn’t find outfits that made me feel good. This has changed all that and I’m starting to get fitter and a healthier weight again and love going out too.

This sounds amazing!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 08/03/2023 07:59

I had mine done 30 years ago and it’s the best money I ever spent. Saved me a fortune over the years, no more expensive mistakes in the wardrobe never to be worn.

TheGirlWhoLived · 08/03/2023 08:03

Would anybody like to do my colours…. For free 😂 I don’t think they do a food bank for colours sadly and all these extra living costs have eaten into my fun Money this month… it’s all very first world problem.

I have mid brown/red hair at the moment- naturally quite dark though. Officially hazel eyes that are mostly green and I’m fairly pale but tan to a light brown fairly well and don’t really burn in the sun- I don’t really stay out in it though. Veins are blue/greenish under my skin and I have a red undertone to my face that I cancel with make up.

normal colours I wear are black, navy, stripes, sometimes deep green if I’m going out. But it’s all a bit meh

Southstand · 08/03/2023 08:07

I'm a blue/dark autumn so peacock's tail feather colours look best on me rather than the orange/yellow colours of autumn.

I knew darker colours looked better on me but thought at one stage that I might be a dark winter and bought clothes in those colours - black, wine etc. Brought out every blotch in my face. I'm much healthier looking with yellow based colours rather than blue based ones.

I've lost some weight at the moment so I've some clothes in storage in smaller sizes and in winter colours. I'll just wear them out.

If you are an autumn Better tights have nice ranges of colours.

dudsville · 08/03/2023 08:10

I didn't do it professionally but i have an artistic friend and while we were out shopping one day it came up that u didn't know what suited me. She explained it really simply and it's been great. I do still break the rules occasionally for an item i really love, but at least i understand why i don't look as good when i do.

MokaEfti · 08/03/2023 08:13

Puffalicious · 07/03/2023 21:52

I'm interested in getting this done for sure. I'm confused when I google the colours as I look best in a real combination!

Any blue really, but cobalt/ denim/ cornflower are best, also pinks but best are pale pink/ fuschia/ coral. I also suit red and a true, bright green and it must be white- anything cream/ beige looks totally crap on me, ditto browns/ olives/ burgundies. I love navy. I wear black only with a slick of bright lipstick in the winter.

Blue eyes, medium skin and originally mousey/ dark blonde now light grey/ blonde (natural).

Any ideas anyone?

You sound exactly like me colouring wise and apparently I'm a winter (can't remember which exact winter as I only did a style day and at the end she told me I was winter by the way).

All the colours you mention suit/don't suit me in the same way, except for coral I think.

MultipleVeganPies · 08/03/2023 08:16

Isn’t this a thing Bridget Jones’ mum was all for? 😁

I think it’s nice to spend some time and money on yourself, and if this works for you it’s great. Some of my friends had it done and loved it

Fabled · 08/03/2023 08:17

I had my ‘colours done’ a few years ago.
I’ve found it helpful, although I don’t stick to it religiously.

I’m a ‘jewel winter’, and that’s helped me break up my diehard love of black with some other colours, especially during winter months. I DO suit black, though, apparently, which is good because I love it!

There we’re some small but important things that I learned that have made a big difference to how I dress - that I look good in dark navy, that white is better than cream on me, that the browns and olive greens I used to love wash me out etc. So it’s been useful.

I also found the little colour swatch book I was given at the end really helpful. I can wear pretty much wear all colours, but it’s the shade and coolness that’s important. I’ve worn colours I’ve never worn before - pink, yellow - because I can identify which shades are cool (as opposed to warm) and look good on me now.

My ‘colour analyst’ was indeed a woman in bright colours and a chunky necklace Grin. She did try to persuade me that I look great in magenta lipstick…I didn’t follow all her advice Grin.

supadupapupascupa · 08/03/2023 08:20

Yes. I started with house of colour, then I went to see David Zyla.

Best money I ever spent on myself.

It was fun
I love knowing what box I am
Shopping is soooooo much easier
It gave me confidence in chiding clothes that suit me
My wardrobe is very mix and match now
It gave me inspiration for home decor too

TheOGCCL · 08/03/2023 08:31

I think some people benefit from getting their colours done more than others. If you have very pale Caucasian skin and mid brown hair, it can help you look less dead. I have a pale colleague who is clearly a Summer who was wearing a black blazer yesterday, sucking all the life out of her. I think if you have very olive/yellow skin it can help with looking less sallow. But in my view for lots of other people it doesn’t make a massive difference. Someone with very dark hair and striking blue eyes (Snow White) is going to look dramatic and impactful whatever they wear.

If you only buy clothes from a single season’s palette, you are already half way to a capsule wardrobe as everything will more or less harmonise. If you have every colour under the sun it takes more work.

vestanesta · 08/03/2023 08:37

I had mine done about 10 years ago and was a paintbox spring. I am fairly neutral (fair skin, grey eyes, light brown hair). It did help and I do follow some of it still - tan for bags and shoes, bright navy rather than black for work jackets. It was limiting though as my best neutrals were chocolate brown which disappeared for the shops for years and have only just come back.

I am now firmly in peri and a bit faded tbh. I am slowly greying and was feeling very drab. I bought a couple of t shirts in my old 'wow' brown and they aren't right. They are still ok but not quite as good. I read an article which said that this happens - your basic season remains the same but you can change within that.

RosaBonheur · 08/03/2023 08:38

I'm thinking of getting mine done.

Does anyone want to have a go at diagnosing me?

I have medium dark brown hair, which gets some very subtle highlights in the summer but is otherwise pretty solid brown. Blue grey eyes. Fair skin with a definite pink undertone. I burn easily but get a light tan if I have a lot of sun exposure over several weeks or months whilst wearing SPF. In winter I am pale with a pink tinge. I have a few freckles but not loads, which seem to be permanent (all year round).

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/03/2023 08:41

This is brilliant I'm so much in need of a boost after being ill for 10 months now. My hair is back to its natural colour. I'll try the apps and link above to get me started. I love black and been told i suit it. I definitely don't suit pastels at all. I'll report back what I get. If I had the money at the moment I'd love to get someone to do them. I will report back ♥️

KatharinaRosalie · 08/03/2023 08:45

Yes this is a very good point. Before my wardrobe had literally all colours, bright yellow, magenta, brown, orange, cobalt etc etc as I had liked the particular item.
Now I have soft summer pastels mixed with neutrals like grey and navy, and everything matches and I look so much more put together.

hennybeans · 08/03/2023 08:49

I’ve just paid to have mine done with Emily Innes, but I haven’t received my results yet. I’ve joined the FB group and found it so interesting to go back and read all the posts. Some people have posted with various photos of different colour clothing and you really can see that some colours are stunning when it suits.

The most revelatory thing to me is lipstick! I don’t wear it generally, like most women I know, as it feels maybe too attention grabbing or uncomfortable. But a bright lipstick in the right colour (crucial!) lifts your whole face. I saw a photo of an ordinary looking women on this FB group without lipstick, then one with her asking if a certain colour pink lipstick was right and the transformation of her face was amazing.

A tip someone gave is to wear the lipstick around the house for a week or two first to get used to the feeling and seeing it on your face if you feel uncomfortable. And of course, I suppose have your colours done so you can choose the right shade to begin with.

LittleBear21 · 08/03/2023 08:54

@Fellsidefeather would you share her website/social media details please? I suspect I'm in desperate need of some help and live in that neck of the woods. Many thanks

Boshi · 08/03/2023 08:56

I had mine done a few times, once by colour me beautiful and twice by house of colour. I was diagnosed as an autumn by CMB which I had thought all along and was happy with as I love autumnal greens and mustards. Nothing really wowed me though and I didn’t really change the colours I wore.

I then did HoC and they told me I was a winter - this really surprised me but when she tried my best colours on me I was amazed - cobalt blue, emerald green. I completely changed my wardrobe around in terms of colour (and slightly style as I did the combined style colour day) and I feel so much brighter in my clothes, my old autumn colours used to make me feel pretty drab.

it makes a huge difference if you have been wearing the wrong colour all along because you like them.

Btw I didn’t pay for any of these sessions, they were training sessions, if anyone is interested sign up for them on their website, they have them and often need models - it’s a fun day out esp the style and colour days.

Boshi · 08/03/2023 08:58

It makes me laugh because i used to think I had dull skin and needed skin pick me ups but all I really needed was to change the colour of my top 😅 it makes shopping easier as well as you can discount the colours that won’t do you any favours

BatFaceOwl · 08/03/2023 09:50

@TheGirlWhoLived you sound very much like an autumn - maybe a soft or true autumn as opposed to a deep one though!

Floisme · 08/03/2023 10:57

I haven't done it but I know people who have and they were all really positive about it. These were mainly people who hated shopping but who worried a lot about wearing the right thing. (I think they'd agree with that.) It seemed to really boost their confidence and they discovered a pleasure in clothes that they'd never felt - or at least never openly expressed - before. My only caveat is that in some - but not all - cases it was only a temporary boost and a couple of years later they were back where they'd started.

I've never done it because, although I don't know which season, I think I can tell reasonably well which colours suit / don't suit me. Also because although it's a factor, it's not the only factor, e.g. sometimes I'm more interested in the style or shape or fabric than the colour. I enjoy the process and I'm notoriously relaxed about getting it wrong sometimes - if I like something enough then I'll wear it regardless. A colour consultant once tried to sell her service to me by promising I'd never have to think about getting dressed again. I said, 'But I like thinking about getting dressed!' and she made her excuses and moved on. But I understand that a lot of people don't enjoy thinking about it and are looking for some kind of short cut - I'm like that about cooking - and if that's the case, I think it makes sense.
