Weight vs. dress size

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:11

I am 12 stone at 5'6 and struggling to fit into a size 16-18.
Does this sound about right?

I'm aware that I'm overweight but I'm so depressed about my clothes. I've got big boobs and can never wear anything shapely so I look like a bin bag all the time.

I'm sure 12 stone would've been about a 14 when I was younger.

What size/weight are you?

buckleten · 28/02/2023 17:15

I'm 11.5 stone at the moment and 5'5, and most 12's seem to fit me though one pair of jeans is on the tight side! Still haven't got around to losing the Christmas weight!

dreamingofsun · 28/02/2023 17:15

Im 14-16 and 5'5 and 11.5 stone. if i put on 0.5 stone then i think i would probably be 16-18. i too have fairly big boobs and more of an issue is my stomach. dont think 12 stone = size 14 except in my dreams

buckleten · 28/02/2023 17:16

But my boobs are non existant..!

familyissues12345 · 28/02/2023 17:16

I'd expect you to be a smaller size than that?

I'm just under 17 stone, 5ft 7 and a size 20-22 (I'm working on it!)

neveradullmoment99 · 28/02/2023 17:17

I'm about that. 5ft 6 and a size 14.

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:18

I thought that too @familyissues12345 but maybe I'm delusional!

BreviloquentBastard · 28/02/2023 17:18

I'm 5'7", 13st, wear a 14 in most places so now I'm really baffled by some of the responses on this thread because I feel like I should be a much bigger size!

peachgreen · 28/02/2023 17:19

That seems strange, OP. I'm 5'7", almost 16 stone and a size 16. Sometimes 14, sometimes 18, but usually a 16.

When I was 22 stone I was a size 26.

I don't expect to ever be smaller than a 14 because of how I'm built, but we'll see!

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 28/02/2023 17:20

I’m 12st9lb, 5’6” and size 16-18 top, size 16 bottom so roughly the same as you OP.

Theelephantinthecastle · 28/02/2023 17:22

Shops vary a lot.

I am 13st and 5 foot 4 in 14/16

WeCome1 · 28/02/2023 17:22

Depends on the shops.

Im 5’8”, 11 stone and a 12 in ‘nicer’ shops, 14 or more in cheaper/younger.

gwenneh · 28/02/2023 17:22

I'm 9st9lb and a 14-16 at 5'3".

InstagramBitchWife · 28/02/2023 17:22

I think it really depends on your body type. I'm 5ft4, 9st 10 and a 10-12 in dresses, but a 14 in jeans and trousers. I'm an apple, all the fat is on my stomach. I've always been tummy heavy, slim legs and arms.

neveradullmoment99 · 28/02/2023 17:23

Depends upon your shape. I've narrow shoulders, E cup. My stomach is a big issue. I was a pear, but since menopause, with my fading waistline, I'm more of an apple now. I struggle with fixed waists. If I buy my waist size, trousers/ skirts are huge everywhere.
I'm definitely a 14 and 50 plus. So it's not an age thing.
I think you should be a smaller size definitely.

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:23

Where do you shop @peachgreen ?

I was trying on jackets in M&S yesterday and the smallest I could do up was size 16

OP posts:
TheOGCCL · 28/02/2023 17:25

It kind of depends on the shop. I am about 5"4 and 9 stone and wear everything from an XS (6) to a L (12). I just don't think you can go on the literal number, that's why we need online retailers to be really specific with measurements or end up with loads of returns. It also depends on the type of fit you want and the way the garment is supposed to fit, also someone might fit into one size but actually like the look of it better in a different size (smaller or larger).

As a general rule, I would have thought you'd be able to get into a 14 but it really depends where you get clothes from. Zara for example is notoriously small. I think H&M can be too. Whereas Next is bigger.

StephenDedalus · 28/02/2023 17:25

I'm 5ft 9". 12st 2oz & I'm a large 12 / small 14 depending on the shop & the shape.

I'm aiming for 11st 7oz & I.will be a neat 12 then

Berlioz23 · 28/02/2023 17:27

I’m 5’5 10 st 8ib and a size 16/18 on top with big boobs but a 12 on the bottom, curse of the big bust I suppose. Of course that means I have to have a larger sized dress that’s far too big on the bottom.

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:37

Quite a big variation!

OP posts:
Celia24 · 28/02/2023 17:40

Possibly. I'm about 13 stone, 5'5 and an hourglass shape. I'm 14-16 at the moment.

User473831 · 28/02/2023 17:40

I’m 5ft 9 and even as a 7 stone 21 year old I was a size 8.

(I am definitely not a 7 stone 21 year old now!)

No one can see your clothes labels though, all they can see is how they fit and currently a size 12 is perfect for me!

It's so interesting isn't it, I'm 5ft 7, 11.5 stone and a size 14 (12 in some generously sized shops but I'm kidding myself if I thought I was a 12)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/02/2023 17:45

gwenneh · 28/02/2023 17:22

I'm 9st9lb and a 14-16 at 5'3".

really? I'm 5'5" and at 10 stone was a size 10 (bottom) and size 12 (top). I can't believe you're a 14/16, where are you shopping?

Sadly I'm.no longer 10 stone, I'm 11 stone 10 and can just about get into size 14 jeans. I'm definitely a 16 on top still.

Shesinthegym · 28/02/2023 17:46

It must be about shape because I’m surprised at @gwenneh. I’m also 5,3 and 9stone 8lbs and I wear size 8-10.
I have a flat stomach now and currently carry my weight in my bum and thighs. If I got above 10 stone I’d have a big stomach though as I have recently discovered and would probably be more like at 12.

Polis · 28/02/2023 17:48

Same height as you OP.

8st 7ish. Size six.
