Weight vs. dress size

I am 12 stone at 5'6 and struggling to fit into a size 16-18.
Does this sound about right?

I'm aware that I'm overweight but I'm so depressed about my clothes. I've got big boobs and can never wear anything shapely so I look like a bin bag all the time.

I'm sure 12 stone would've been about a 14 when I was younger.

What size/weight are you?

OP posts:
Mummys · 28/02/2023 21:14

5'4" and 11ish stone. I'm a 10-12 (12 more often than not)

gwenneh · 28/02/2023 17:22

I'm 9st9lb and a 14-16 at 5'3".

How? I'm that weight, 5ft 2 and a size 10

Superduper02 · 28/02/2023 21:16

I've always thought about this because I look nothing like my weight IMO and I don't understand why. Recently I have realised that I build muscle really easily and am bigger boned so maybe just weigh heavier than spritely people. When I weighed 12st, 5ft 5, I was wearing size 10/12 on top and 14 on the bottom. Now at 14st+ I wear 14/16 in top and 16 in dresses and 18 in tight trousers on the bottom (more for the thighs and booty than waist which is always gaping. Depends where you carry your weight and your style on dressing. I am hourglass and mainly wear dresses and feminine-fitting clothes. Having said that, having a bigger bust just changes everything. I would go as far as to say you would go up 2 dress sizes because of a bust in unforgiving fabric. My advice OP is to try clothes with stretch which accomodate a feminine figure. Also perhaps you are one of those spritely people who have a feather light frame and its just the bust changing your dimensions😊

Everything sits on my hips. I’ve got a very curvy figure with a super pronounced waist. It’s impossible to find anything that fits my hips and waist at the same time!

Scalessayeek · 28/02/2023 21:22

5’11” here 20.5 stone, size 22-24 max 38gg/38h depending on the shop.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 28/02/2023 21:26

5’4” and 9.5 stone, weight lifter so quite a lot
of muscle. Generally a size 10,
sometimes an 8 depending on style/ fit for bottoms. Size 10 usually for tops but to accommodate shoulders and lats not boobs.

I took the same size clothing when I was a stone lighter and more petite, about 20 years ago. There’s a lot of vanity sizing around and imo dress sizes have increased massively.

Ricco12 · 28/02/2023 21:32

13 stone
5ft 10
Size 14

pinkberet · 28/02/2023 21:32

I'm 5 foot six. Recently lost weight from 14.12 to 12.3 and moved from a 16/18 to a solid 16 with the occasional 14 top fitting me.
But I feel better and I look better so I don't care about the number on the clothes

Alstoybarn · 28/02/2023 21:33

5 ft 8 14 stone size 14

forgotmyusername1 · 28/02/2023 21:38

If you go on Tanata scales it can be an eye opener

When I was 12.5 stone I was a size 12 at 5ft 4. Looking at the scales print out I am muscular build and had nearly 8.5 stone of muscle so there was no chance of getting down to the 9.5 stone the bmi calc wanted me to.

Chocolate23 · 28/02/2023 21:43

Body composition makes a huge difference. I was 17 stone 10 last year and a size 16. I joined slimming world and they couldn't believe I was that heavy. I'm 5ft6.5. I didn't look like any of the other ladies my weight.

I have always worked out and I can only assume that it made me appear smaller.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 28/02/2023 21:46

5' 10"
11 stone
somewhere between an 8 and 14 depending where I shop.
At M&S I am 10 on the bottom and 12 on the top, which makes sense as I'm an athletic triangle body shape.
But across different companies, it is a lottery and I'm not gonna say I am an 8 to make myself happy, when that is the outlier.

samthebordercollie · 28/02/2023 21:49

BillyAndTheSillies · 28/02/2023 21:11

10st 4, 5'8" and size 8 pretty much consistently.

Really? I'm 5'8, 9 stone and a size 8/10.

Changemaname1 · 28/02/2023 21:51

11 stone 5ft 8 and size 10-14 depending on store and the fit of the clothes

sheusesmagazines · 28/02/2023 21:55

5'5" and 8st 5 and I wear 8-10. I have small boobs and an apple shape so a lot of my weight is around my tummy.

LadyAstor · 28/02/2023 22:04

It entirely depends on how you carry your weight.

A strawberry shape (shoulders/back/bust larger) may be a 16/18 but a pear shape will fit in a 10/12 as all the weight is on the bottom/hips/thighs.

Generally dresses are much smaller on top than they are down below, allowing bottom heavy people to wear smaller clothes generally.

Sizes also vary wildly from brand to brand.

Mulberrybushtree · 28/02/2023 22:11

I'm 7 stone 12 and usually wear a 6 or 8 depending on where I shop. I am short 5ft 2 and a petite always looks best on me.

BillyAndTheSillies · 28/02/2023 22:13

Yes @samthebordercollie really. Mainly because I have a very slim waist (24 inches).

Three years ago I was a size 22 but would have things from an 18-24 depending on what shop I shopped in but now I can pick a size 8/XS in pretty much any shop.

Netcam · 01/03/2023 10:23

5'3, 9 stone 3, 34D, pear shaped with boobs. Can be 10 or 12. Dresses, t-shirts and tank tops 10. Trousers/skirts can be either 10 or 12 depending on fit/style/shop. Often find waist too big in 12 but bottom too tight in 10, petite sizes can fit better for trousers, but prefer leggings/jogger style with elasticated waist as they for me better. Generally prefer 12 for more fitted style jumpers/cardigans/long sleeved tops to accommodate boobs but baggier styles would be a 10. Anything with an oversized fit might be too big in an 8.

blobby10 · 01/03/2023 10:35

Surely it depends on where you shop, the clothes you are trying ie quality and the fit you prefer? I used to know someone who swore she was a size 10 on the bottom half but her trousers were so tight the stitching had all stretched! And they looked tight but she liked that fit! I prefer my clothes to have bloating room/a looser fit so tend to buy bigger size if I'm in between (like I have been all my life!)

That said, I've gained 2.5 stones since my 20s (now 54). In my 20s I was a size 14 but could squeeze into some 12's or even a 10 in a high quality shop. Its only since I gained the last half stone that I've had to size up to a 16 so the sizes can be very misleading. I'm 5ft 9

Nellodee · 01/03/2023 10:43

5’6” 12 stone, always a 16.

Pythonesque · 01/03/2023 10:54

If I got my weight back to 12 stone I'd probably be size 12-14. But, I'm almost 6 ft tall without the long legs many tall women have. (I remember having to go up to a size 16 ladies for a school swimming costume age 10.5 to get one that stretched long enough to get into it - though I fit in it twice over sideways...)

(currently well over that and 13 st is a long-term goal if I can start things moving in the right direction).

TeddyTrucks · 01/03/2023 10:58

I'm 5' 6" and weigh 16 stone, generally fit a size 18 though not always around the waist.

Pre bariatric surgery I weighed 25 stone and wore a 26-28.

The lowest I've gone was for my wedding, 13 stone and a size 16.

tiutinkerbell · 01/03/2023 11:15

Im 5'2, 9st4lbs and it totally depends on store. Some places I am a size 8 and others I am a 10. Usually a XS/S on the high street, but this weekend I bought M tops in Zara as they were so tight.

Purplepeopleeaterz · 01/03/2023 12:33

5Ft 4 and 12st & a size 14, I think the weightlifting I do sucks my wobbly bits in a bit though?
