Weight vs. dress size

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:11

I am 12 stone at 5'6 and struggling to fit into a size 16-18.
Does this sound about right?

I'm aware that I'm overweight but I'm so depressed about my clothes. I've got big boobs and can never wear anything shapely so I look like a bin bag all the time.

I'm sure 12 stone would've been about a 14 when I was younger.

What size/weight are you?

Twix42 · 28/02/2023 17:49

I'm 5ft5, 11.5st and wearing a 12.
I have no hips to speak of, I'm so straight and narrow, but have good boobage 36E, but a thick and flabby rolly tummy. My bum is my best bit! I think I'm apple shaped 🤔?

peachgreen · 28/02/2023 17:51

I actually find M&S very generous, that’s where I’m usually a 14 in tops! I think it must be your boobs OP.

bellsbuss · 28/02/2023 17:52

5ft8 10 stone 2 and a size 8-10

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:54

@Twix42
Interesting - we're so almost similar but not quite. (Im actually 5'5 but I've said 5'6 for so long that I forget!)
I haven't worn a twelve in about 10 years. even when I was 10.5stone.

I'm 9st9lb and a 14-16 at 5'3".

That’s weird - same height here and when I was that weight I was comfortably a size 10.

rookiemere · 28/02/2023 18:09

I am 12st ( just under now thanks to low carbing) and am a size 14 in most skirts, trousers etc and a 12-14 in tops.

Also depends where you are buying from - top end clothing eg Max Mara I would struggle to fit in an XL, but just had to return two size 14 tops to M&S as one was too big and the other too small Confused.

I do quite a lot of exercise though, so apart from my tummy I'm fairly solid.

QueefQueen80s · 28/02/2023 18:10

I'm 12 stone 5ft 7 and a size 12, we're all different shapes.

ronswansonstache · 28/02/2023 18:14

OP I am the same height and about 11st 10 so roundabout the same weight. I fit into a size 12 for most shops. I have always been heavy for my size. When I was a size 10 before having DD I was about 11st so really in the upper level of bmi 'normal'

I mostly shop at M&S and Tu (Sainsbury’s). It's likely I wouldn't fit so easily into a 12 for more expensive brands (they're the ones that always seem smaller to me!)

MyLittlePonyWellies · 28/02/2023 18:30

I'm sorry to report that I am 5'8", 14 stone-ish, size 18-20

Like you, I don't think I should be wearing sizes that big for the weight, but here we are 😬.

I wonder if it's that I was more muscular when younger so could wear a smaller size with more weight.

I'm trying to shift it, but it is a bit harder now I'm pushing 40!

Lentilweaver · 28/02/2023 18:42

I am 5"7 and 11 stone. Am a size 12 in most shops, 10 in M and S.

Rebel2 · 28/02/2023 18:44

I'm 5ft 10
15 stone size 14
17 stone size 16

Southstand · 28/02/2023 18:50

I'm 5'5" and weight 12 st 5lbs. I'm losing weight at the moment. Currently I'm in size 18 trousers and size 16 tops but these are getting looser. I shop mostly at M & S so it's their sizes.

MyCarMyWay · 28/02/2023 18:55

I don't think that sounds right op. I am shorter than you (5ft 2) and when I was 11st 7lb I wore size 14UK comfortably. I've always been hourglass shape and for me 1 stone (14lb) is the equivalent of 1 dress size.

BuntyCollocks · 28/02/2023 19:21

5’8, 11 stone or just under and I’m a 10-12

Im99912 · 28/02/2023 19:27

Depends on your frame / shape
at at 5ft & 12.6 stone I could easily fit into a 14 and it be a bit loose
I’ve lost just around 15lbs since January and I would say I’m a small twelve

But I have a very flat stomach & small waist
broad shoulders and big hips
the ideal weight for me is probably just under 11st which is what I’m aiming for
Then I may have to choose between my ass or my face 😂

sealon82 · 28/02/2023 19:51

I'm 5 foot 7 and around 12 stone. Size 12 top and 14 bottom.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 28/02/2023 19:53

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 28/02/2023 17:20

I’m 12st9lb, 5’6” and size 16-18 top, size 16 bottom so roughly the same as you OP.

Plus I have big boobs and am apple shaped (I don’t sound particularly attractive do I!)

AmongstTheCosmos · 28/02/2023 19:57

I'm 5'6" and weigh just under 12 stone. I'm about a 12 on the bottom and a 10 on top. I carry my weight on my thighs and bum. (Tiny boobs 🙄)

journeyofinsanity · 28/02/2023 20:03

gwenneh · 28/02/2023 17:22

I'm 9st9lb and a 14-16 at 5'3".

That's surprising. I would have guessed you'd be more like a 12 at that weight. But then again we all weight very differently at a given size.

quinceh · 28/02/2023 20:04

I’m 5’3’’ and just under 13 stone. I’m more or
less a 16 on bottom (although not in the less generous sizing) and 14 on top. That’s after quite a bit of weight loss so there are some
saggy areas to account for!

mummylondon16 · 28/02/2023 20:06

It depends on the distribution of weight, measurements, muscle etc. there is a site called what size am I where you can enter measurements and it tells you your size in a range of shops.
im 12st 5.7 and I wear a 14. Big bum and big boobs

NeedNwJeans · 28/02/2023 20:07

Which store 16-18? I'm same height, but in your weight I was size 14 in where I used to shop (12 in M&S)

fairtrauchled · 28/02/2023 20:08

I'm 5ft8,10st 6lbs and a comfortable size 12 or sometimes a generous 10.

hastycurl · 28/02/2023 20:08

I'm approx 5ft 6 weigh between 8 and half and 9 stone and am a size 8-10. Waist is probably 6-8 depending on fit.

I'd have guessed from your weight and height that you would be 14-16, OP.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 28/02/2023 20:09

I’ve been losing weight and noticed that I’m not the same sizes at the weights on the way down as I was on the way up.
I’m 5ft 9…

15 st 10 was pushing an 18
14st 13 back in to size 16
13st size 14
12st 5 now and still 14 (comfortably so most shops)
