Weight vs. dress size

I am 12 stone at 5'6 and struggling to fit into a size 16-18.
Does this sound about right?

I'm aware that I'm overweight but I'm so depressed about my clothes. I've got big boobs and can never wear anything shapely so I look like a bin bag all the time.

I'm sure 12 stone would've been about a 14 when I was younger.

What size/weight are you?

This is so interesting! I'm between 5ft7 and 5ft8, I weight around 10 stone and a pear shaped. I wear a 12 on my bottoms and a 10 on top.

Octomingo · 28/02/2023 20:10

Aren't measurements better to go on than weight? I was heavier a couple of years ago, but it was muscle and I was tighter and more toned, so clothes fit better. I have no idea what I weigh, but I'm 5'9 and have clothes from size 10 to 14, from 1996 to now. Thought I was massive up top, until I got properly bra fitted about 15 years ago.

occa · 28/02/2023 20:13

I'm 5'4" and 9.5 stone and I'm a 12/14

Carsarelife · 28/02/2023 20:14

12 stone and 5ft 2 sizes vary between size 14 and 16. I have a belly but very skinny legs and large boobs

HeavyHeidi · 28/02/2023 20:15

It depends on your muscle mass as well. I'm 5'6 and almost 12st currently and wear size 12 comfortably, 10 is wearable but tight. But I lift weights. When I manage to get back to around 11st, I'm a comfortable size 10.

Eatentoomanyroses · 28/02/2023 20:16

Throwing mine in. I’m 13st and 5ft 10. I wear size 12 jeans but need a 14 in a top.

Paturday · 28/02/2023 20:16

Doesn’t sound right to me - I’m currently 16 stone, size 16. And people say there’s no such thing as being heavy for your size!! 🙄🙄

buzzswole · 28/02/2023 17:54

@Twix42
Interesting - we're so almost similar but not quite. (Im actually 5'5 but I've said 5'6 for so long that I forget!)
I haven't worn a twelve in about 10 years. even when I was 10.5stone.

I am pretty solid with muscular legs and massive calves too (fat runner) not sure if that makes any difference... lol
I'm sure vanity sizing in some shops is definitely a thing though!

themuminator · 28/02/2023 20:20

I'm 16 stone 5'5" on a good day and size 18-20.

At 14-15 stone I was more usually a size 18 sometimes 16.

Hoping to get to 12 stone, no idea what size I'll be then but there will be less weight on dodgy joints.

SocksAndTheCity · 28/02/2023 20:24

I'm 10 stone or near enough at 5'4" and I'm a size ten tops, 8-10 in bottoms (mostly because I'm a G cup). I'm surprised at @gwenneh too; where are you shopping?

DeoForty · 28/02/2023 20:27

Roughly 11 stone, 5'4". I'm a comfortable 12 and an occasional 10. I have no boobs worth talking about, flat stomach and bigger legs. If I was to wear a pair of super skinny jeans, I'd be a 16, I'm sure!

GettingStuffed · 28/02/2023 20:30

Iman inch taller than you but take the same size clothes and weigh a lot more.

heartbeatt · 28/02/2023 20:32

InstagramBitchWife · 28/02/2023 17:22

I think it really depends on your body type. I'm 5ft4, 9st 10 and a 10-12 in dresses, but a 14 in jeans and trousers. I'm an apple, all the fat is on my stomach. I've always been tummy heavy, slim legs and arms.

I'm exactly the same.

I'm 5ft 6 and apple shaped. So I have slim arms / legs but carry fat around my tummy <glares at DC and c section shelf>.

I'm 12st 7lbs and a size 12 on top / 14 around middle / 12 on legs.

Makes shopping an absolute joy 🙄

ToddlerIs2 · 28/02/2023 20:38

19 stone and size 22, now confused what I'd need to lose to be a size 14!

SmartySmartie · 28/02/2023 20:43

5’9” 10st 7lb a comfortable size 12. Over 11st I’m a 14, can’t imagine I’ll ever be size 10.

ghlily · 28/02/2023 20:45

Weight and height aren’t the only determining factors. 15 stone of muscle looks different and fits differently in clothes than 15 stone of fat. Everyone has different body compositions.

AllMouthButNoTrousers · 28/02/2023 20:54

I'm 9 stone 8, 5 foot 6 and a 12 just fits me in M and S

That’s fascinating. I’m exactly the same height and weight as you. But a size 8/10. In fact I often buy size 6 dresses from Boden. 12 would be really quite big on me. I am very toned though- I wouldn’t have thought it would make much difference 🤷‍♀️

5128gap · 28/02/2023 21:03

5' 4" 8.10, size 4/6 for my waist, size 10 hips/bust.
It always surprises me that anyone is ever a single size when the assumption is that a waist of y" will be accompanied by hips of x" and bust of z".
I've noticed that clothes seem to be cut straighter with less hip/bust to waist differential these days so may explain a need to size up.

Thisislifefornow · 28/02/2023 21:04

I'm 5,3 9st 6 and size 10 in all items of clothing.

WhatWhereWhenHowWhy · 28/02/2023 21:05

5ft4, 12 stone, size 12 tops or dresses sometimes, size 14 bottom always atm

Dacadactyl · 28/02/2023 21:07

I'm 9st 10lbs at 5'7" and a size 10 most places (sometimes an 8, but it's rare)

Also, it depends where you're shopping. I'm an 8 in all supermarket clothes, but would be a 10 elsewhere.

BillyAndTheSillies · 28/02/2023 21:11

10st 4, 5'8" and size 8 pretty much consistently.

afinishedkiss · 28/02/2023 21:13

Big boobs really affect your size. Mine are huge but I don’t weight huge if you know what I mean.
