Especially maternity wear was very, very flouncy and voluminous.

Especially maternity wear was very, very flouncy and voluminous.

And wedding wear. I think I have mentioned that I got married in the 80s. Wedding dress shopping was not fun.

TangledWebOfDeception · 12/02/2023 15:20

Haha yes, I can imagine it wouldn’t have been much fun if one didn’t want to look like a meringue...

Another thing that Diana took to the very max!

Maireas · 12/02/2023 15:33

Yes, but remember that it was fashionable - a lot of women genuinely loved the flouncy meringue look. I personally had more than a few tops with a pie crust frill .
I think that early 00s strapless wedding dress fashion looks awful now, I remember helping someone shop for a dress and she was so frustrated - every one was strapless!

Friend married early 80s frilly dress oyster pink with hoops just ankle length. Strapless, boned, Lace corset. She just needed a crook. I swear she looked like little bo peep

Maireas · 12/02/2023 15:56

I'm sure she felt gorgeous, @justasking111!
I may have photographic evidence of myself in a lurex puff ball skirt, boned bodice and a huge hair bow. Oh yes.

TangledWebOfDeception · 12/02/2023 15:59

Of course, it was was fashionable so lots of women were all about it! No problem at all with that. Just saying it must have been very frustrating to try to find a bridal dress (especially after the royal wedding!) if you weren’t all about the flounce and volume! It’s always the way with fashion and trends.

Maireas · 12/02/2023 16:03

I agree, @TangledWebOfDeception - to be fair, you could still find non poufy, non frilly stuff, it just seemed less fashionable.
Just like those who didn't want a strapless dress 15-20 years ago.

I recall Laura Ashley back then. The shop was full of milkmaid type outfits. And the frills I did like some of the fabrics. Dorothy Perkins did budget versions. Frills, lace, smocking, puffed sleeves.

Looking at Erdem reminds me faintly like an echo of the past, but their fabrics more upholstery look.

Maireas · 12/02/2023 16:54

I think those Laura Ashley prints were nicer, the colours and designs better. Or maybe that's me looking fondly at the past!

TangledWebOfDeception · 12/02/2023 17:20

Oh yes, I actually like a lot of that. The more restrained colours appeal much more to me than the bright colours of that era. Especially when those colours are in tandem with BIG everything else! Big hair, big shoulders, big sleeves, big everything is just a little too much for me...but I like it well enough on other people.

Love that one photo of Fergie with that poofy red stole. Very glamourous!

TangledWebOfDeception · 12/02/2023 17:23

(Except she needed an undergarments intervention)

KillingMeDeftly · 12/02/2023 17:26

Ah Fergie and her 80s gear. Remember the velvet bows? I had one in primary school and felt so on-trend!

ChicoryDip · 12/02/2023 17:29

1980s Laura Ashley...

@justasking111 - I had a similar bridesmaid's dress - candy striped pink and white with a hoop and huge sleeves that sort of hung from the shoulders. Half a dozen sheep and I'd have been sorted!

The white tights 😮

The white tights 😮

I had to wear white tights as a bridesmaid (I was 15). I looked awful in a peachy coloured frilly dress with a huge bow on the arse.
A bit like the one Scarlett wears in 4 weddings and a funeral when she flashes her knickers.

LadyEloise1 · 12/02/2023 18:17

The white tights 😮

How nice that flats and low heels were the fashion, though!

Maireas · 12/02/2023 19:31

I agree, @Serenster - even for events and going out! Stylish, low heeled or flat 👌

justasking111 · 12/02/2023 19:33

Got an old school photo we were all wearing white tights. Ummmm not flattering with the skirts we'd hoiked up 😅

MmePoppySeedDefage · 12/02/2023 19:36

I had a Laura Ashley dress that I loved - almost teal background with purple green and yellow pixelated parrots on it. Not very LA as there were no flowers and it was quite a big pattern, not 'ditsy' but gosh it was pretty. And tight around my top.

SenecaFallsRedux · 12/02/2023 20:19

I had a Laura Ashley dress that I loved, at least up until I wore it to a family Easter brunch. It was a dark navy blue in a very fine wale corduroy that felt more like velvet. It was mid-calf length and had a wide white lace collar and cuffs. And yes, I do believe that white tights (or pantyhose as we say in the States) may have been involved. Anyway, my brother who is a British history aficianado like me, but less so a fashion maven, said to me, "After this, are you going to a costume party as Oliver Cromwell's daughter?"

Maireas · 12/02/2023 20:36

@SenecaFallsRedux 😂😂😂
Puritan chic! The parliament of the saints...

Oh yes, the coloured tights of the Eighties. I had white, and red and bright blue, I think.

Maireas · 12/02/2023 11:33

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon - isn't that just the laziest journalism ever?
The constant reaching to compare her (or Meghan) to Diana. It's ludicrous.

Absolutely, most of the time it is such a vague similarity too. Just woman wears dress in a similar colour to one her mother in law once wore.

TangledWebOfDeception · 13/02/2023 11:05

Yes. Like their ‘one woman is a SPITTING IMAGE of another woman’ thing - literally meaning they both happen to have brown hair and a fringe. 🙄🙄
