I just watched the live thing. Some of the work is really pretty (some not so nice). I totally get why you might want to buy something you didn't manage to get before with a little splash of embroidery, especially if it's damaged deadstock - however they explained the pricing and it was the original price plus the hours that the extra work took. Why are they charging the original price for items that customers have returned as damaged?? Plus the charge to do a visible repair (however pretty) That is madness!

Its absolutely ridiculous and gives the totally wrong impression.
Its a gimmick that they are cashing in on. Things that have been returned and sometimes worn!! If they had charged at least sale prices, fair enough. The linen swingy top is just about the same price as the ones on the website. Infact, I think its £5 dearer for one that has been damaged and repaired?
I too get understand if you lost out on a purchase and it comes up that you might buy it. Its all a bit too much like profiteering to me.
Not sure I liked the visible mend on the ladies green jumper. The blue bits were a bit weird.

Stravaig · 23/02/2023 15:57

If it's something that couldn't be sold due to damage or wear, then it should be 80% off archive sale prices maximum, to cover the cost of the additional work salvaging it. So something that would previously have been written off entirely now has value. Anything more does come across as sheer greed. All the benefit is to Toast; and not to customers, or suppliers, but to enable a very few people to live very comfortable lives indeed.

Stravaig · 23/02/2023 16:06

They're also missing that the essential charm of a repair resides its ingenuity and uniqueness, that it is genuinely home made, the interaction of garment, wearer, environment, repairer, and skills and materials to hand.

Toast is trying to monetise something that they don't even understand. Which is true of most of their community and sustainability marketing bollocks.

faustina · 23/02/2023 16:53

@Stravaig - that is very well put, though I think their offer of free repairs, and their repairs workshops, and the idea that they have 'added' something is fine in itself

Somehow if they'd gone to all that trouble of making the creative repairs (and some of them were really nice) and then auctioned them, or sold them at those prices and given the money to a charity, or Turkey/Syria - I wouldn't have e minded that somehow, and it would have been good PR for them. This just makes them look grabby and slightly grubby too

dudsville · 23/02/2023 16:57

I just watched the video too, and agree they've gone wrong with this.
If they'd kept the whole video, so the lovely craftwork, the name checks, etc,. but missed out the pricing mistake, and spoken instead about how their work can inspire and generate make do and mend mentality, then I would think this was a fabulous way forward. As it is it's just embarrassing. Like you say @faustina , an auction for charity would have been a great idea.

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 23/02/2023 17:10

I’ve watched the video and agree that the idea in itself is good, but the prices and ethos behind the pricing lets them down.
I wonder whether many of these items will eventually end up in the sale or perhaps disappear altogether.

However it has inspired me to look anew at some of my items of clothing, particularly those which have an unsightly mark that I can’t remove. I had never considered a repair or embroidery to cover these, and was quite interested to hear it mentioned in the video.

In other news I spoke to my friend who lives near Llandeilo this afternoon. She says that since the archive stock’s been replaced by menswear she hasn’t seen a single customer in there. Apparently a high end men’s shop opposite went bust a few months ago and that never had any customers either. Something seems to have gone awry at Toast.

Countmeout · 23/02/2023 19:22

Are we expecting a new drop tomorrow or is it the first weekend in March?
Sideline looks interesting and they are dropping tomorrow.

@Countmeout - I've been looking at the sideline things on Insta - some really promising pieces!

If anyone is inspired by the embroidery and visible mending. this is a lovely shop where I ordered threads and needles and things when I did some boro - it's also got some well written guides on how to do it:

My heart sank when they started Menswear . My local Toast has a menswear rail and random men ambling around the small space .
My gripe is that the stores are usually small to start with and trying on facilities usually poky , menswear has encroached to the extent that the fitting rooms have been made even more tiny,
with nowhere to park one’s own clothes whilst trying on theirs .

@Countmeout i like that shirt that they’re shown with

faustina · 24/02/2023 06:14

I have those in a beautiful tobacco colour and they're really nice (sizing on a par with toast so size down!)

Snowyowl78 · 24/02/2023 06:54

@faustina ive been looking at Sideline recently too but not bought anything yet- noticed it is £5 delivery so I don’t want to take any chances with sizing. Would you say everything comes up quite large a La Toast?

faustina · 24/02/2023 07:10

@Snowyowl78 - I only have those Billy trousers and they're definitely oversized. Do they have some kind of discount for a first order? not sure if there's any point me measuring mine as they're elasticated on the waist and very wide everywhere else, but I can if you like? Mine are XS and I'm a 6/8 in toast (depending on the waist)

Snowyowl78 · 24/02/2023 07:11

ahh thank you but don’t worry about measuring, I will assume everything is slightly big. I have just signed up for the newsletter so maybe there will be a discount. Thanks!

Countmeout · 24/02/2023 08:09

Yes delivery is £5 and returns are not free but I’ve just discovered Scout Dublin have priced them more competitively than I remembered from last year and makes very little difference in Euro from the sterling price and bonus I can go down to try on. May make a trip in March and see.

I’ve just ordered a few things from the new stuff- before realising returns arent free!! My own fault for not checking.

I really liked this skirt. Don’t normally wear skirts so not sure if it will suit me, especially as I’ll have to tuck something into it I think. I love the print anyway!

I love that skirt! Definitely on my wish list 🤩

neveradullmoment99 · 24/02/2023 08:53

Please post a pic / give details when it arrives!

Snowyowl78 · 24/02/2023 09:15

@neveradullmoment99 theres a dress too! I thought the skirt was more wearable though. I saw them say on instagram that they only made a few so I ordered it quick. Never bought from them before but hoping M will be ok, especially as it is elasticated so a bit of grace either way.

they also have some lovely jackets and some really really nice embroidered shorts that i want but they are really really expensive - £148 for shorts - had to draw the line there. No spend Feb has been a failure.

A failure for me too :(

Ive ordered the Toast ochre balloon trousers. They should arrive today. Not sure if they will suit me tbh but was inspired by the lovely check ones I have bought recently. They are so comfy and lovely. Ive already worn them twice!

Countmeout · 24/02/2023 10:41

Well I fell off the wagon too and ordered the linen top
www.toa.st/collections/womens-tops-tees/products/garment-dyed-linen-swingy-shirt-midnight
It arrived this morning. Lovely weight. The sort of thing that reminds you why you buy Toast. I ordered my normal Toast size in tops like this. I would say it’s marginally smaller than the white blouse in a similarish style. Not helped by the cake eating. But I doubt the next size would hang as well as this one, also linen stretches. And I loved it the moment I took it out of the package.

is that these trousers @neveradullmoment99 ?
www.toa.st/products/garment-dyed-linen-balloon-trousers-fenugreek
will look forward to hearing about them, I think you’re taller than me though?

I love Sideline's twirl & zoom page! You can set them all playing at once 🤣
