Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

Folk can wear whatever they like, but personally I think black and navy looks the opposite of classy. Perhaps it was my mam drumming it into me? To the extent that I always have bag, shoes, boots in navy (work mainly). If I see someone professionally in e.g. navy trousers and black shoes/boots I do think it looks really unprofessional/ odd/ as if you haven't thought about what to wear.

I don't know what the black and navy dress a PP bought would look like? I suppose it would look better as it's 'meant'.

Like I say, personal choice.

My mum worked in a bank when I was growing up and had a navy uniform. She was obsessed with having navy shoes to match. And navy tights. It always looked awful. She is allergic to back and now I hate navy (especially navy leather stuff) as it reminds me of that dodgy uniform.

I don't have rules as such but these days I dress very much for comfort while still trying to look nice - if something is too tight or an uncomfortable fabric I'm not suffering it!

Other preferences:

  • no white underwear - nude is much more flattering under clothes although both look like granny wear 😳
  • 'nice' underwear - even if it's just plain black M&S knickers and bra I feel better if it's newish and matching
  • right clothes for the right season. I hate seeing boots or tights in summer for example but appreciate they're probably necessary for some people
  • much prefer natural fibres/fabrics
  • don't care if something is from Primark or designer if it looks and feels good
  • no big earrings for me, they just dont suit me - I was given 2 pairs for Xmas so I did try them again but I look ridiculous for some reason

Most of all I love wearing clothes that make me happy and I'm sure I look better when they do.

No Double Denim
No Navy and Black
Boobs or Legs not both
And if you can smell your own perfume you're wearing to much

Niftythrifter · 06/01/2023 15:13

@MissCherryCakeyBun I did double denim in the summer and I am planning on doing it again soon!

Personal rules are:

  • No high heels/uncomfortable anything
  • Don't tuck in tops/wear a belt (I'm short waisted)
  • Avoid high/boat necked tops (large boobs)
  • Don't ever buy clothes (top half) in a colour that doesn't suit (a dark autumn) no matter how gorgeous.
  • Don't ever buy clothes that don't fit right now.
MissCherryCakeyBun · 06/01/2023 15:36

@Niftythrifter I grew up in the 70's in a sea of denim..... by the end of the 80's with stonewash, acid wash etc? No more double denim for me

No tan leggings! The amount of women I’ve seen in them and looks like they’re not wearing bottoms!

RampantIvy · 06/01/2023 16:12

I haven't seen anyone in tan leggings.

What is the MN hatred of nude tights about? Sometimes it isn't warm enough for bare legs, yet black tights in spring and summer just look wrong.

I love nude tights, I hate my bare legs. I will always chose tights, if no tights a bit of leg make up.

OMG.

KittenCatt · 06/01/2023 16:49

My thoughts exactly!

RampantIvy · 06/01/2023 16:51

They look like they have been deliberately desgined to look like they aren't wearing anything. I mean the way they go right into the buttock crease. And why is it always very overweight women who wear them?

I'm not keen on navy tights, but I do have a nice Snag pair (60 denier) which I wear with a denim skirt and tan, chunky ankle boots and a navy, chunky jumper. Or with my navy, suede shoe- boots with a chunky heel- they go with loads of dresses for work.

Talking of work I broke a rule today! Fuschia, baggy trousers and a black, wool polo neck. Somehow it seemed more acceptable than black trousers and fuschia jumper. No idea why. I'd usually wear those trousers with a white shirt/ grey jumper but thought I'd go for it! Broke it up with a grey, leather slouch bag, though.

Your navy and tan outfit sounds great. I might revisit navy.

woodhill · 06/01/2023 19:40

I like navy, it's easy to wear and team up,with other colours

Puffalicious · 06/01/2023 21:19

Navy suits my skin tone much better- I have a lot of navy trousers and tops🙈- but I like black too, just need to fling on a bright coral lippy.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/01/2023 06:47

I’ve seen quite a few pairs of tan leggings in Birmingham in recent months. It’s never, ever a good look.

Can’t stand Jess whatshername in the Guardian. She contradicts herself within a matter of seven days and never really says anything. I’m sure they could find a much better writer. I think that about a lot of their columnists though.

Chaiandchocolate · 07/01/2023 08:35

Too tight clothing
Hoop earrings of any size
Thick fake nails
Shoes - comfort first mostly
Keep to 2 colours, 3 max if possible
Classic styles - I don’t suit most high fashion and never have

Nightwear - why is it so hard to buy reasonably priced women’s nightwear that doesn’t have twee writing or Disney characters on it? They don’t put Tweetie Pie or ‘Sweet Dreams’ on Men’s pj’s but apparently women love this stuff (now I’ll be told I’m in the minority and it’s adorable and fun..)

Iamthewombat · 07/01/2023 08:41

What’s the hoop earring thing about? I am curious because Fay Weldon (RIP) mentioned it in one of her books, The Heart of the Country. The principal character, Natalie, is deserted by her husband before a dinner party and her twelve year old son disapproves of her putting on a pair of hooped earrings. Is it because they were considered tarty or gypsy-ish or something?

Chaiandchocolate · 07/01/2023 08:44

@Iamthewombat yes that’s pretty much it - cheap and trashy looking.

Lottapianos · 07/01/2023 09:31

YES! I'm with you. I don't want love hearts or teddies or Disney shit on my PJs, I'm not 5 years old. Solved that problem by buying men's nightwear in a small size

Strawblue · 07/01/2023 10:01

“Nightwear - why is it so hard to buy reasonably priced women’s nightwear that doesn’t have twee writing or Disney characters”

Totally agree - even my 7yo wouldn’t wear some of the cutsie pie crap that is on women’s nightwear, but they must sell this stuff because the shops are always full of it. It infantilises women.

I agree. In winter I generally put on tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie, when I would usually be putting Pjs on, like in an evening. I sleep in a T-shirt and shorts. Just buy plain ones and keep them just for sleeping.
