Fashion ‘Rules’ you stick to?

Niftythrifter · 02/01/2023 12:00

What ‘rules’ do you stick to and which ones do you ignore?

As a petite I stick to loose/ fitted and vice Versa to balance out my figure.

I don’t deliberately follow any fashion rules and I look fine. What is ‘out’ one season will be ‘in’ for another and I usually enjoy stepping away from the ubiquitous even if what everyone is wearing looks perfectly fine.

It’s also possible to match different patterns well.

I know that it’s a typo but I am entertained by the concept of the ‘sandal/boat’. I’m seeing a miniature mast with sails and rigging hoisted over the instep.

😂 tbf my feet are so big they may as well be boats

Trinny and Susannah were on the TV about 20 years ago. A lot has changed since then. I remember them saying not to wear strong colours with black trousers. I now really like this look and think it looks fresh and not remotely like anything I've seen a waitress wear this millennium. Everything comes round again.

Likewise when I was about 20 I matched pink and green and my boss told me they clashed horribly. I didn't agree with her than and I still don't, nearly 40 years later.

Rules are made to be broken. It would be so boring if we all looked the same.

Penguinsaregreat · 04/01/2023 22:25

I have dined in many, many restaurants and I cannot ever recall seeing waiting staff wearing black trousers and a bright coloured top.
One thing I don’t like is too much fakery. So if you have false eyelashes and hair extensions don’t also wear fake tan and fake nails. Same applies to up fillers. If you have them then ease off on the fake tan/hair/nails.

AnnieSnap · 04/01/2023 22:43

Cleavage or legs, but never both. If wearing pants and a top, only one should be baggy (despite me really liking the over-sized look).

And my own - never wear a dress or top with a yoke on the back. They are hideous!

I read all of the T&S books, and watched What Not to Wear, and I don’t remember them ever saying that black trousers and a coloured top made the wearer look like a waitress. What they actually said was that pairing a colour with black often cheapened the look and that the colour would look better with a different neutral like grey or white. Which I get. I don’t think that’s become less true because they talked about it twenty years ago!

AnnieSnap · 04/01/2023 22:58

@echt I don’t get the ‘no black boots or shoes with denim’ 🤔 but then at 63, I never wear blue denim, only black or grey. I find blue denim looks best on the young. I love red and would definitely wear it with black. Although, other than my black jeans, I own very little black. I wear any pattern or colour that call to me and that I love (especially bright blue and bright green together). I don’t wear many pale colours, but if I like something in a pale colour, I’ll buy it. I enjoy expressing myself with my clothes. I tend to prefer clothing that’s a little edgy.
As for the poster who decried royal blue, wash your typing finger with soap 😲

FKATondelayo · 05/01/2023 10:03

Just coming on to defend the cleavage AND legs look. I wore a plunging v neck minidress to our Christmas drinks and I looked great. The fashion rule is you're supposed to emphasise your good points and distract from bad ones so no reason why you can't dress to highlight legs and boobs if they are both assets.

Niftythrifter · 05/01/2023 12:39

I think I might have broken my own rule as today I am wearing my Boden wide leg jeans with my Bimba Y Lola jumper which is pretty oversized on me. Rules, as they say, are meant to be broken!

My biggest rule is wear what makes me happy 🙂

emptythelitterbox · 05/01/2023 13:28

I put clothes on before going out.

If you only have good points, what do? Go out naked?

Weather permitting, of course.

What is a yoke in a dress? I thought it was something used to join oxen together for ploughing!

I think even the most body positive fashionista pervert would drawn the line at genitals being aesthetically pleasing so at least you can keep your pants on.

It a panel if fabric at the top if a dress or top, usually ending above the shoulder blades 🤮 Here’s some pictures of the sort of thing.

I try not to wear skin tight garments on both my top and bottom half.
Also, as others have said I don't have arse and tits out in same outfit.

Giggorata · 05/01/2023 19:26

I have a few that may be peculiar to me, what with colours, body shape and age:

No writing on clothes
No polyester (apart from fleecy things)
No wool
No acrylic
No dropped waists
No high necks
No kitten heels
No cold shoulders
No halter necks
No pleated skirts
Nothing white
No neutrals
No pastels
Nothing skimpy
Only dark jeans
No dark boots/shoes with light trousers
Only bum covering tops with leggings

As someone who likes lagenlook clothes in darkish but intense colours, I am quite happy to wear coloured tops with black harem trousers, sometimes with a long black waistcoat. But then I don't care about fashion.

OceanbreezeSun · 05/01/2023 19:52

Not ‘rules’ as such or trend driven, just things I don’t like personally so wouldn’t wear.

I wouldn’t wear black trousers with a bright colour top.
I wouldn’t wear a fitted top with fitted trousers - it’s one or the other, like a fitted top, baggy trousers.
I don’t wear lots of jewellery- would never wear pearls or dainty jewellery. I go for one statement piece if I’m getting dressed up. Day to day - usually just wear very small silver or gold hoops and my wedding bands.
I steer clear of ballet pumps or anything with a kitten heel
I don’t like tights - ok with a short dress in winter but I think they spoil the silhouette worn with any other length.
I tend to wear colours that I think suit me - I like different neutrals together & pinks, coral, navy and soft yellow. I don’t really like bold colours, steer clear of red.

TiredThursday · 05/01/2023 19:57

The Trinny Takeover show - only online, on You Tube and I think her Trinny London website. Sort of a shorter, updated What Not to Wear. I've watched two series in the last two days!

"Likewise when I was about 20 I matched pink and green and my boss told me they clashed horribly. I didn't agree with her than and I still don't, nearly 40 years later."

I saw a woman dressed in pink and green in a cafe tonight with her daughter. She looked good, but it's true that I noticed her particularly whereas I wouldn't have noticed someone wearing a more classic combination.

Has Jess Cartner-Morley been reading this thread?
She likes navy and black too and, wait for it, gold with silver Wink

Jess Carter Morley has written an article that I have just read for The Guardian about breaking fashion rules and the joy it can break. It’s worth a read.

No heels
No bare legs at work or in a church
Don't combine grey and brown
Avoid black or blue v neck jumpers as they make you look like you're at school
Avoid loafers for the same reason
Trousers need to be a proper length and cover ankles because otherwise they'll get cold in winter
