I think the RF really learned from Diana and gave her that space to grow, start her family and relax into her role rather than just dropping her nto the role and letting her get on with it. I'm really starting to see her as a queen in waiting now.

iknowimcoming · 03/12/2022 00:40

I agree the fit of the green dress seems odd, the neckline seems slightly too high to me - almost like it should have been folded over so it would have been an inch or two lower iyswim?

RomainingCalm · 03/12/2022 00:56

I'm firmly on the fence with the green dress. On its own I don't like it much but seen in the context of the event, the green carpet and the photos it absolutely works. And the earrings and choker are perfect.

I'd like to see her rent more of these 'one off' dresses that I can't imagine getting a rewear as they make such a bold statement.

There's also something a bit incongruous about the media praising the environmental message of renting when yesterday's beautiful brown coat was allegedly several thousand dollars. Maybe Kate needs to start regularly rewearing more of her formal wardrobe if she's going to genuinely reinforce the sustainability credentials.

I agree. I'm not crazy about the dress, although I think the overall effect succeeds. But I think that renting a dress is a bit gimmicky. I would also have liked to see her wear an American designer. Mid-range Ralph Lauren would have been perfect.

Gooseysgirl · 03/12/2022 01:23

Kate has literally blown thousands £ on her clothing this week. The rental is little more than lip service 🤷🏻‍♀️ She has plenty of other green evening dresses that she could have reworn tonight. The dress is ok, I don't love it I don't hate it. Nice to see her wearing a different piece of royal bling for a change though! Hair fabulous as always 😍 The botox is very obvious these days, but that's her choice I suppose. He style of her Harvard dress reminds me a bit of Maria Von Trapp's green dress in the SoM when she returns to the family, and I can't unsee it now!

EmGee · 03/12/2022 06:45

The pressure must be tremendous so I am not passing judgement. But it's the first thing that I noticed when I looked at some of these photos of the US trip (botox and fillers). I think the camera must accentuate it. Maybe in real life it's less marked and more subtle.

Good to see Kate taking a risk in her rented dress.

MintyFreshOne · 03/12/2022 06:54

idk the dress is kind of ugly, great it’s a rental so we’ll never see it again . The choker doesn’t seem quite right either

Eaumyword · 03/12/2022 08:23

Well I think she looks stunning - she certainly has the figure to carry it off! I like the dress more in motion than standing still. Love the emerald choker.
I thought she looked like Kelly Brook zooming in on her face to look at her makeup. Beautiful but yes, slightly different to normal. Thicker brows definitely.

BornBlonde · 03/12/2022 08:29

Kate looks beautiful at Eartshot

This is my favourite outfit ID so far - it combines my loved of fashion, royal-watching and stationery🥰

Loving her style choices for the US trip in general though. Not a coat dress in sight!

If you click on the photo you will see the pen ID 😜

megletthesecond · 03/12/2022 08:58

It was a good idea to wear rented. Can't tell if it's make up and / or filler / botox altering her face.

chesterelly1 · 03/12/2022 09:11

Howling at "a bit Tess Daly" thanks LadyVic. Pretty much loved everything from the trip but does anyone remember when the Queen wore a similar shade of green dress and it led to a thousand green screen memes? I think Catherine could be setting herself up for similar.

ShamedBySiri · 03/12/2022 09:20

I wonder a lot about rewears and one offs. It must be so exhausting constantly finding new things to wear - don't slate me on this, if I had an unlimited budget all of a sudden sure I'd sling out most of my (very) old clothes and enjoy getting some new but then I'd be wearing the same stuff all the time again. Just when you find something really lovely that really suits you and you love it and not to wear it again??
I'm sure other posters would love to go mad on the fashion scene without a care in the world but the novelty would wear off and after an initial splurge favourite items would earn their worth, at least if one was busy with other things in life.

And the storage?
There must be roomfuls and roomfuls of clothes that HMQ wore, and whilst many will have historical interest and should rightfully be preserved, and some might be suitable for family members to rewear if that was possible like Beatrice with her wedding dress (though most of the family are too tall and the clothes wouldn't fit) but there must be way more than could ever be displayed in an exhibition. What on earth do they do with them all?
I do vaguely remember something about some royal ladies (was it Diana) getting their dressers to drop a few things off at charity shops or second hand shops, but they could only do that with stuff that wasn't obviously identifiable, shirts, sweaters, separates, that sort of thing. And they probably ought to be discreet and go to places in random towns a bit further away than Kensington high st or Windsor.

I don't really think Catherine will start making a habit of hiring - maybe instead she should be hiring her stuff out? 😂 (Not that many will have the figure to wear it).

KillingMeDeftly · 03/12/2022 09:23

Slight bra failure under the green dress but that's just me being picky!

I'm so pleased the coat dresses seem to be a thing of the past. They make her look too matronly IMO.

LadyEloise1 · 03/12/2022 09:47

I'm not sure about the dress either, though few could wear it as the fit and colour are very unforgiving.
I thought the make up was very heavy handed. Made her look older.
Did she have s bag with the dress ?

CliffsofMohair · 03/12/2022 09:51

Spot on whoever said a bit Tess Daly.

glorious hair but she blends into the carpet with the green.

Good points, @ShamedBySiri .
I have read that QE2 gave a lot to women in the household, then charities - often in Scotland, but I'm guessing it would be the less identifiable pieces.
Diana used to send a member of staff to sell hers in those dress exchanges in Kensington. There's a section in Paul Burrell's book where she asks him to count the cash in her desk drawer and it was £11k!
Anne I suspect wears hers until they can become dog bedding.

That's an hilarious photo - something about her stance and the wave makes her look like brunette Barbie.

I also laughed at the Tess Daly comparison, but unlike many I generally think Tess dresses well for her role. And there was a journalist in the crowd who was present at the awards and in her story afterwards said you could see Kate clearly from every corner of the auditorium - it was a great use of the power of colour.

I also thought that there’d be a load of memes, but then I guess they figure becoming a pop culture moment might actually be good for recognition/profile?

gingercat02 · 03/12/2022 10:23

Gorgeous dress and shoes.
Not a fan of chokers at all and I think the emeralds are too "blue" for that shade of green.
A necklace probably wouldn't have worked with the neckline, but there must be a full diamond choker in the vaults.
Totally appropriate for a hired dress at Earthshot and a way we will get more "new" frocks without the wear it once waste.
IMO the first PoW trip has been bang on and I'm not usually her biggest fan clothes wise.

Exactly. Hence my play dress up comment. If only I could use a computer to do it
