A sad start to a new thread, but I hope we can celebrate the legacy of Elizabeth Regina, what a woman, and what style!

Ah yes, you’re right, Cherie must have changed shoes. At Westminster she’s in kitten heels, but at Windsor it looks like loafers.

Serenster · 20/09/2022 12:26

I also like Queen Rania's shoes with the little buckle, her coat with the ruffle was fab too.

Loved Queen Margarethe's sensible lace ups.

Both these Queens were good examples of how thoughtful royal’s clothing choices can be. Rania recycled the same coat dress she had worn on an earlier state visit to the UK where she’d spent time with both Elizabeth and Phillip. And Margarethe wore a brooch that had come down the family line of her grandmother Margaret of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/09/2022 12:33

Just googled and she changed her shoes, she was in low heeled court shoes at Westminster Abbey, similar to Norma Major, slightly less skinny heeled than Theresa May'. She's definitely not in the same shoes at Windsor.

Having zoomed in on a couple of the pictures at Windsor they aren't ballet shoes they look like more driving shoes, but flats all the same.

Can't say I blame her for wanting to change her shoes, it was a long day but I think a low block heel and squarish toe might have been a better bet so she could manage the whole day in the same shoes, or as something to change into that suited the dress better. The sort of thing we often see Camilla in.

Cherie looked like the had hip issues the way she was walking through Windsor.

I think Nicola Sturgeon's style is quite sparing. She's such a small person that details overwhelm her; all the dresses she wore during the daily Covid briefings were of the same neat/restrained style.

It wouldn't be for everyone but I think she's figured out how to dress for her shape and size pretty well.

Did anyone else prefer the Windsor ceremony to the Westminster one? I loved the more personal touches, like the horse and the corgis being brought out. I did worry about the pallbearers on those steps though! I loved the lone piper at Philip’s funeral, but felt it was a little less special this time, just because we’d seen it so recently. Having said that, I was showing my DD’s the photos this morning and still got a lump in my throat just telling them about it.

I think someone upthread said that seeing Charlotte’s brooch made them want to get one. I know they have generally been seen as very old fashioned, but I loved the simplicity against the black coat, and how lovely to receive something like that from your great-grandmother. Also, looking at all of the other jewellery being handed down, or that had been gifts from the Queen. It’s made me think about buying my DD’s some pieces for their future birthdays (they’re under 10 now). Does anyone else do this? I don’t think it would occur to my parents or in-laws to buy special jewellery for the children in the family, but I’ve loved seeing it all on the royal ladies. I love Camilla’s stick insect brooch, and Meghan’s diamond and pearl earrings.

Yes I preferred the Windsor service too but found it more upsetting with Corgis and pony.
my daughter is 19 now but I’ve bought her special jewellery pieces for birthdays etc. for 16th 18th etc. She only wears silver so it’s not been very expensive. She also asked for Pearl earrings drop ones and I got her some cultured pearls and gave her a cultured Pearl necklace I had for years. She’s already got her eye on what she wants when I die lol !

I have many brooches all different designs, I used to wear them at the top of shirts pinning the collar together and on pussy bows (!). I really think they add interest to a plain coat/top/jumper......oh I was so out of fashion, does that mean I am now in fashion????

I have one very similar to the one Charlotte had a horseshoe with small crystals on, bought it many years ago at the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Have been know to wear one on the side of a plain headband as well, just remembered that.....

How do you stop the brooches catching on finer fabrics ? I guess it depends on the brooch but I’ve got a couple of larger brooches and the reason I don’t wear them often is that the pin is quite thick and could ruin garment. Any tips would be appreciated as I would love to wear them more often

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 20/09/2022 13:25

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon“ Carrie's dress looks like something from Chelsea Girl circa 1989, especially with all the cheap looking brass hardware on the dress, belt and bag.”
This made me laugh 😂
I had one like this in the 80s I wore to the office , think it was Dorothy Perkins just looked awful and cheap and not as if Carrie is skint !

CosmopolitanPlease · 20/09/2022 13:34

This thread has been so informative and wonderful, thank you to all of you who are so knowledgeable in royal style and who's who Flowers

Does anyone know if Baroness Glenconner was present at any of the services? I'm reading her book at the moment and looked forward to spotting her somewhere. She was one of the queen's maids of honour at the coronation and lady in waiting to Princess Margaret.

justasking111 · 20/09/2022 13:39

All of you criticizing Sturgeon our first ministers wife in Wales forgot to put her teeth in 🙈

justasking111 · 20/09/2022 13:41

So cross with myself when we downsized remember tipping all the dynasty style costume jewellery into the bin. My DILs would be gutted if they knew

Eaumyword · 20/09/2022 13:44

I feel for Cherie if it is hip issues - same here. The only comfy footwear is trainers or DM boots, neither would have passed muster yesterday!
I didn't see Lady Glenconner, but I read her book too - so interesting and rather tragic at times.
Does anyone know if Lady Colin Campbell went? That's a question!🤔

I generally agree, and normally I think she dresses quite well. I think the black perhaps made it more obviously boring rather than neat/smart/restrained. The hat was a bit boring too.

Having said that it was all respectful and appropriate, her job isn't to look good, it is to run Scotland so I feel a bit bad criticising!

smilesy · 20/09/2022 14:01

Albert of Monaco looks like he has put tracky bottoms on with his uniform jacket 😂

SenecaFallsRedux · 20/09/2022 14:31

On the question of damaging fabrics with brooch pins, it it's inexpensive costume jewelry (careful if vintage, though, they can be quite valuable), you can have a magnet attached. I also think there are magnets that slip over the pin that can be used. I would worry about the security though if it's fine jewelry and not costume.

AdaColeman · 20/09/2022 15:07

I liked seeing Albert in his royal ceremonial military uniform, and loved its Ruritanian vibe. I was little sorry that he hadn't brought his own personal troop of carabinieri in their flamboyant red white and blue uniform with him.

Alltheleavesarefalling · 20/09/2022 15:46

Brooch pins, well lucky I have not had any mishaps, but some older ones (from my Grandmother) were a little pitted on the pin, but cleaned them up. Others I have bought overseas and have some 'vintage' from the 80's think Ciro, Monet and the like and have all been good but some are to heavy to wear with lightweight fabrics so I am careful they dont 'pull'

On the subject of pearls, I love them also, DH bought me a Mikimoto pearl necklace years ago with small black pearls and golden pearls (or are they called sand pearl's?), love it and wear it as much as I can, mostly with costume pearl earrings as I am really bad at loosing earrings.

Can I make a couple of comments about others clothing, thought Nicola Sturgeon could of worn black tights, and Meghans hat I thought was to flimsy and see through and looked quite C&A circa 1982, but loved the gloves, Sophies coat was gorgeous, but not liking the hat with it.

chesterelly1 · 20/09/2022 15:48

Nicola Sturgeon manages to tread the fine line of looking smart and tailored enough to mean business whilst still being the oppressed underdog with a dose of no-frills Presbyterian thrown in for good measure, someone nailed it earlier "functional and uninspiring". And that, believe it or not ladies is probably the nicest thing I've ever said about her. And as we're known for leaving any cattiness for other threads I shall say no more.

endlesscraziness · 20/09/2022 16:00

@667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast & it was rented so she could be rented something fabulous for not a lot as well

justasking111 · 20/09/2022 16:02

With twin girls I've been checking out charity shops for treasure. Have bought some lovely bits they wear when coming here to play. Haven't looked at the brooches before but shall now

KillingMeDeftly · 20/09/2022 16:13

There's quite a funny Tracy Ullman sketch where she plays an Angela Merkel who is irate that Nicola has stolen her signature look!

Gazelda · 20/09/2022 16:21

I had my grandma's brooches put into my wedding bouquet. It made me feel she was with me.

My DD has inherited a couple of pieces of jewellery (ring and necklace) and I've made sure they're put away for when she's older. I remember inheriting a necklace when I was about 8 and I played with it so often that it broke 🥲

SenecaFallsRedux · 20/09/2022 16:32

Speaking of things that perhaps should be brought back and also of gloves, I think that those elbow length gloves that Meghan wore were so elegant. There's a 1960s HMQ, P. Margaret, Jackie Kennedy vibe going on there.

SingaporeSlinky · 20/09/2022 16:42

Yes very Jackie O I thought

Maireas · 20/09/2022 16:49

I've noticed that Meghan often has tonal gloves with her outfit. They're usually calfskin and dyed to match (according to Meghan's Mirror!)
I agree that they create a very elegant look.
