A sad start to a new thread, but I hope we can celebrate the legacy of Elizabeth Regina, what a woman, and what style!

Sorry if this has been asked but who was the young lady with the kind of spaghetti strap dress with lace covering shoulders and arms? I think she was behind Zara at Windsor. I thought it was quite inappropriate for the occasion but to each their own. Just wondering who she was.

paradyning · 20/09/2022 07:17

Wasn't that Margarita?

paradyning · 20/09/2022 07:17

Omg I'm so stupid. Just realised why she's called margarita 🤦‍♀️

Anyone else think Boris looked like he had been dragged through a hedge backwards?! Most of the other ex PM’s were wearing morning suits with waistcoats, it’s not as if he can’t afford it is it ?

Boris always looks scruffy and bedraggled. It's his thing. Think he thinks it makes him relatable or something

What an utterly beautiful and fitting occasion. Completely dazzled by the service, the procession, the music and the flowers. haven't looked at all the clothes but loved how Kate and Charlotte were in sync. Sitting watching in Melbourne discussing with DH whether we should go over for the coronation next year.

Yes, please come over!

Please come over, @SenecaFallsRedux! As you say, Tracy, we could have a meet up.

Morning all, just came across this thread a few days ago and have been catching up. Hope it’s ok to join you?

I thought yesterday was wonderful. Gorgeous photos of Kate, and although I’m not a fan of Meghan, I thought she looked incredible. I noticed her tear at Wellington Arch. Also noticed Sophie, Edward, Lady Louise and the York sisters tearing up. Natural of course, but kind of nice to see. I know that sounds weird, because they’re just human of course.

lollipoprainbow · 20/09/2022 07:53

How's everyone feeling this morning ? I feel flat but kind of glad that it all went so well yesterday. I found myself watching the funeral again yesterday evening.

You'll get a better view on TV! 😁

Saw Boris commons speech close up it looks as if chunks of hair had been ripped out. Covid really did a number on him. I suspect he was a bit vain about his Barnet

Oh I didn’t notice that tbh I avoid watching him as much as possible! Thought he might have made a bit of an effort for the funeral

Yes he does, I thought he would have made a bit of an effort with the suit if not his hair. I didn’t think Carries dress was too low cut really it wasn’t as if she had a big cleavage going on but i didn’t like the buttons thought they looked gaudy at a funeral and the dress looked cheap. That looked like an 80s style dress to me I had one similar. I’ve seen her wearing much nicer things.

Yes I feel flat and it’s sort of unreal that we won’t see the Queen again. Omg I couldn’t have sat through it again, felt emotionally exhausted yesterday after watching the service at Windsor as well. There are some nice documentaries about the Queen on BBC iplayer I will maybe watch another of those today. I also started to rewatch The Crown after she died. I also feel like I just took her for granted, I never or rarely watched her speech at Christmas. I think I watched the one or two during lockdown that’s it and now she’s gone.

SingaporeSlinky · 20/09/2022 10:15

Did anyone else prefer the Windsor ceremony to the Westminster one? I loved the more personal touches, like the horse and the corgis being brought out. I did worry about the pallbearers on those steps though! I loved the lone piper at Philip’s funeral, but felt it was a little less special this time, just because we’d seen it so recently. Having said that, I was showing my DD’s the photos this morning and still got a lump in my throat just telling them about it.

I think someone upthread said that seeing Charlotte’s brooch made them want to get one. I know they have generally been seen as very old fashioned, but I loved the simplicity against the black coat, and how lovely to receive something like that from your great-grandmother. Also, looking at all of the other jewellery being handed down, or that had been gifts from the Queen. It’s made me think about buying my DD’s some pieces for their future birthdays (they’re under 10 now). Does anyone else do this? I don’t think it would occur to my parents or in-laws to buy special jewellery for the children in the family, but I’ve loved seeing it all on the royal ladies. I love Camilla’s stick insect brooch, and Meghan’s diamond and pearl earrings.

meateatingveggie · 20/09/2022 10:24

I have a couple of brooches that were my mums (may even have been her mums). They're only silver but both are simple designs I like. I've worn them in the past, rarely, but I am inclined to fetch them out and polish them up..

SingaporeSlinky · 20/09/2022 10:40

Yes I think they would need to be simple designs to make them timeless. When I think of brooches, I generally think of multi-coloured fussy things that grandmas used to wear. But even the massive stick insect was quite simple (although jewel encrusted on close inspection). The little horse shoe was so lovely. I wonder whether, when family next ask me what they can buy my DDs for Christmas, for example, if I should ask them to choose some jewellery. It won’t be diamonds and gold, but I’m sure they could buy some silver studs or bracelet or something.

Alltheleavesarefalling · 20/09/2022 10:44

I have many brooches all different designs, I used to wear them at the top of shirts pinning the collar together and on pussy bows (!). I really think they add interest to a plain coat/top/jumper......oh I was so out of fashion, does that mean I am now in fashion????

I have one very similar to the one Charlotte had a horseshoe with small crystals on, bought it many years ago at the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Have been know to wear one on the side of a plain headband as well, just remembered that.....

chesterelly1 · 20/09/2022 10:45

@SingaporeSlinky we bought our DDs gold bracelets with their birthstone for their first Christmas, adult size ones not teeny baby bangles. & their birthday falls in the same month so no arguments about who has the best stone! Each of the DC chose something of mil's when she died, (as did I) and I have my own DM's eternity ring. I've got brooches that were my granny's that I should look out and my Grandad's Black Watch badge.

SingaporeSlinky · 20/09/2022 11:19

@Alltheleavesarefalling I think as with most fashions, things come and go, and then come back again, don’t they. For some, they never went away. I just always had it in my head that they were for royals, or older ladies. But maybe I’ll look for some modern ones, if anyone even sells them these days. Adorning a headband is a good idea!

@chesterelly1 that’s lovely. I do actually have something that was passed down, but it doesn’t have any sentimental meaning for me, other than the fact it belonged to them, iykwim.

When I was early 20s and had a decent disposable income, I did buy myself a few pieces of jewellery from Tiffany’s. Just because it was lovely to go in for a browse and then realising I could buy a little something if I wanted to, and not wait around for someone to maybe one day buy me something. I know some people think Tiffany’s is overpriced / paying for the name etc. but the feeling of actually buying something, and walking out with the little blue box was lovely and special, for me. The things I bought cost between about £500-1500 (going back about 20 years now) and I don’t wear them often - not exactly school run, but eventually I can pass those down. It would be nice to get something classic especially for my DDs though. They have costume jewellery for now, and the odd silver bracelets I bought on sale in Oliver Bonas 🙂

You’ve convinced me, I’ll start looking for brooches and maybe some pearl earrings? In fact I might get some pearls for myself!

I'm boring, but I loved Meghan's make up and outfit. I always liked her style. Princess of Wales looked stunning as always. It all just looks good quality and expensive, you can so tell it.

DorritLittle · 20/09/2022 11:35

I loved Meghan and Kate's outfits and hats. Thought Camilla looked lovely too.

It's interesting to study isn't it. Especially for the threads where people ask, how do I look rich, classy etc. Take Kate and Carrie. Both very slim, great figures, beautiful, great hair etc. Kate looked polished, classy, upmarket, refined, tailored to within an inch of her life. Carrie looked far less so. A bit rumpled almost. Huge difference in the price tag of the clothes....Karen Millen vs designer but you can learn a lot just by comparing their outfits.

Thank you for this, there were a few we didn't get a good look at while watching live.

My observations;

Leti and Max looked fabulously glamorous while still appropriate and respectful. Did I see in some photos that Leti is going grey and letting it show? The veil was wonderful.

Boris and Carrie, awful, he looked his usual state but couldn't even be bothered to put on his morning suit, and Carrie's dress looks like something from Chelsea Girl circa 1989, especially with all the cheap looking brass hardware on the dress, belt and bag.

The rest of the former prime ministers and their partners looked fine, although Cherie appeared to still be in her driving shoes, and Tony could have done with a haircut. Norma Major looked lovely.

Dr Biden's shoes were nice, I liked the bit of detail compared to those most of the women were wearing. I didn't like the buttons on her jacket or the little headband fascinator. She's got lovely hair and would have looked great in a proper hat, sort of like Camilla would wear.

I also like Queen Rania's shoes with the little buckle, her coat with the ruffle was fab too.

Loved Queen Margarethe's sensible lace ups. Note to Cherie - comfy flats are fine but own it with some brogues or loafers rather than those soft ballet flats.

Jacinda looked great and appropriate loved the touch of the native inspired stole.

The British Royals looked wonderful as expected, Kate's dress wasn't my favourite style but very smart and suitable and she looked so elegant and regal. Megan looked a bit more stylish to my eye, loved that she had gloves. Zara's dress not quite as nice as the boat neck one a couple of days ago but still good.

I didn't get a good look at B&E's dresses, Bea's hair looked pretty but would have been nicer up, thought the length of her dress/coat a little off too. Eugenie's hat really suited her.

Fergie's hair looked great, as did Kate's up do.

Camilla and Sophie looked lovely.

I didn't think Lady Louise's dress was great either in terms of how it looked on her or in terms of bare arms when everyone else was covered up, also not keen on the hairband but she's young and it is a difficult balance.

I would love to see a full length image of Baroness Scotland as she looked fabulous as far as I could see, and she spoke wonderfully too.

SingaporeSlinky · 20/09/2022 12:06

Cherie looks to be wearing kitten heels, not flats?
I didn’t like Jacinda’s outfit until I realised the stole was culturally significant. Suddenly made it fabulous.

I don’t like Nicola Sturgeon’s hat, too boxy.

I saw her on the way into St George's Chapel and it looked like totally flat soft ballet pumps. The way she was walking didn't look like she was wearing heels either. Perhaps she changed?

I didn't think Nicola's hat did anything for her. Her whole outfit looked a bit functional and uninspiring.
