Frumpy or ok? Photo added

I bought this dress last summer and despite really liking it have only worn it once. As a larger lady I can sometimes struggle to feel like I look nice. DP says it’s ‘fine’ and 16 year old DS says it’s like something his grandma would wear! Is it awful? I know there are probably other things which are more flattering but I like the weight, the material and the length for certain occasions, so as long as it’s not awful I’ll carry on wearing it! 😂

Thanks ladies!

I think it looks perfectly nice...you can wear it with trainers and then boots as the weather gets cooler.

superram · 29/08/2022 14:15

It’s ok but the neck is a bit high. I’d still wear it but with a longer necklace to give a lower ‘neckline’.

superram · 29/08/2022 14:16

I’ve also watched a video on sleeves being shorter making you look thinner so I’d be tempted to take them up to your elbow and see what it looks like.

MontalbanoFan · 29/08/2022 14:16

I like it. As @Wallabyone says, you can wear it well into Autumn and Winter.

KangarooKenny · 29/08/2022 14:16

I’d go with a belt to break it up.

ScottishBeth · 29/08/2022 14:17

I think your son says that because he's 16 and doesn't get women's clothes. Same with your partner probably. Honestly I was expecting it to look dreadful but its nice! Wear it!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 29/08/2022 14:17

it's certainly not awful. I agree though with the pp that the neckline isn't the most flattering. A boat neck/slash neck would be better for your size boobs. And the sleeves are a little too long.

latetothefisting · 29/08/2022 14:18

It can be both - I can see his point that it is a more traditional cut and pattern that a granny could wear - but that's the style in the shops at the moment so would be equally likely to be worn by a 20/40/60 year old.

The difference would be what accessories are worn with it - and of course the age the person wearing it!

Yes, this is what I was going to say. I have a big bust and have to do this with high necklines.

Rinatinabina · 29/08/2022 14:18

I would have the sleeves sewn up to 3/4 length. Otherwise perfectly lovely, what do 16 year olds know!

3beesinmybonnet · 29/08/2022 14:19

Looks lovely on you.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 29/08/2022 14:20

I think it looks lovely and would wear it myself (similar shape to you). Never take fashion advice from your own DCs!

agree about 3/4 sleeves looking nice, but I’d leave them long and just push them up so you have options

GeorgeEzr4 · 29/08/2022 14:20

I think you look lovely

HappyRhino · 29/08/2022 14:20

I actually really like it. I don’t think it’s frumpy, but I were being super critical, I’d say there’s a bit much material so you look a bit swamped. Long length, high neckline and long sleeves. Easiest thing to do would be to pull the sleeves up or get them properly shortened.

Readaboutyourself · 29/08/2022 14:20

Love the dress on you. You could add a necklace to break up the neckline but it looks great.

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 29/08/2022 14:21

Also whoever took that photo needs to learn to stand back a bit, as being too close foreshortens you, losing half your legs! I keep having a go at my Dd for this - when she takes pics of me I end up having to delete them and retake from further away so that she doesn’t chop off my ankles or get a weird angle that makes me look shorter and wider than I am!

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/08/2022 14:24

I like it, plus it looks comfortable. Definitely one to keep wearing.

NotLactoseFree · 29/08/2022 14:27

I'm sorry, I don't like it at all. It creates a huge shelf of your breasts. If it had a boat or v neck I think it would be fine but as it is, it's not flattering at all. A thick, long necklace MIGHT save it but I have my doubts - I have a similar shape and wouldn't wear that at all. I do understand why you like the fabric, pattern and length though.

The sleeves are a bit long but I don't think that's a huge issue, especially if you're planning to wear it into winter.

WonderinFree · 29/08/2022 14:30

I think you would suit outfits with a more structured collar - v neck or square- the round neck doesn’t show off your shape well and you have a lovely figure.

goldenbag · 29/08/2022 14:30

I don't like it - sorry OP.

wizzywig · 29/08/2022 14:32

You have an amazing flat stomach, you lucky moo

ApolloandDaphne · 29/08/2022 14:32

I like it! Looks like the same material as one I just bought. I will post a pic as I have one on my phone.

Nishky32 · 29/08/2022 14:33

I love it, I think you look amazing

MummyDummyNow · 29/08/2022 14:33

It's lovely and you look really good!

Iwantamarshmallowman · 29/08/2022 14:33

I like it but I'm not sure about the sleeves. I think u need to pull then up to the elbow and add a long necklace. sometimes with a high neckline I have to put my hair up as it doesn't look right down.
