Frumpy or ok? Photo added

I bought this dress last summer and despite really liking it have only worn it once. As a larger lady I can sometimes struggle to feel like I look nice. DP says it’s ‘fine’ and 16 year old DS says it’s like something his grandma would wear! Is it awful? I know there are probably other things which are more flattering but I like the weight, the material and the length for certain occasions, so as long as it’s not awful I’ll carry on wearing it! 😂

Thanks ladies!

Thanks all-mixed bag so far! It’s really odd you’re saying about necklines. I don’t know if it’s the angle of the photo or what is t is but I absolutely cannot wear a boat/square or V neck. They look awful on me and it’s been this realisation that has meant I’ve been able to buy things at last rhat I feel nice in. This particular one is longer and fuller I suppose than my usual style but I really couldn’t wear a square neck for example. My boobs aren’t particularly big for my size-C cup so maybe the dress is making my boobs look bigger which is part of the problem? As many have said it’s ok I’ll keep wearing it. If you’d all said ‘god no!’ that would be different but as I’m not a real style icon or anything as long as I’m presentable and we turned out and people aren’t going to say ‘Omg did you see what she was wearing?!’ I’ll be happy with it!

Is it the same material as this? I love my dress.

I really like it. Its pretty and feminine.

milesmachine · 29/08/2022 14:39

I think the neckline would be ok if the sleeves and length of dress weren't so long as it's quite a lot of material

It looks nice but I completely agree with advice to pull the sleeves up and get a long necklace to pull down the neck line a bit

I also agree with poster who says you'd look lovely in collared dresses. There are a few wrap dresses I've seen with collars (or shirt dresses) which would look great on you

Love the pattern

FriendOrFrump · 29/08/2022 14:39

@ApolloandDaphne I’m not sure, maybe! It’s like crepey and pleaty if that makes sense? Thanks so much for the comments about my figure-I desperately need to lose weight and have far from a flat stomach but if the dress gives that impression then I’ll definitely keep wearing it! 😀

I don't know if it's the angle of the photo or the dress but from the picture, I'd say your breasts are much bigger than a C cup. More like an F or FF. That may be one of the reasons you like it! Grin

Ultimately, if you like it and feel good in it, then what your DS says or a bunch of strangers on the internet say is irrelevant. It doesn't look hugely flattering to me but I certainly wouldn't recoil in horror if i ran into you in Costa!

WalkingOnSonshine · 29/08/2022 14:43

Agree that you look more like an F/FF cup - you’re not wearing something like a 38/40C bra when you’re really a size 14 dress size are you?

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2022 14:44

I agree about a lower neckline, it works better with a big bust. I quite like it though, the colour suits you. Don’t do the white trainers thing with it, it’s been done to death and just looks a bit naff.

Ahnobother · 29/08/2022 14:47

I think you look lovely

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2022 14:48

And, if I may say so, you have really good legs which helps carry the dress off.

AuntieMarys · 29/08/2022 14:51

I think you're bigger than a C cup!

Thurlow · 29/08/2022 14:52

You’ve accidentally walked into a bra intervention here! A c cup?!

Threebutterflies · 29/08/2022 15:01

I really like it . It suits you and you look lovely 😊

PatientlyWaiting21 · 29/08/2022 15:03

It’s a bit drab and covering you up, but if you like it that’s really all that matters.

personally I like to see people wearing colours, and clothes that fit the body, not hide that body.

tellyiscrap · 29/08/2022 15:03

I like it ! And the colour will carry you through into cooler weather , you look great

What do kids know ? 😂

isitfridayyet22 · 29/08/2022 15:04

As a larger lady too I think it’s fine, versatile too as another PP said can be worn with trainers or boots

OneLastWanderer · 29/08/2022 15:05

I think it's lovely, would be great with a nice chunky knit cardy and boots in the Autumn too.

If you want to brighten it up maybe a statement necklace?

You look lovely, OP.

BrandNewBicep · 29/08/2022 15:06

It isn't doing you any favours across the bust area, but it isn't awful.

Fritilleries · 29/08/2022 15:06

I don't like it. The colour is too much, your entire body is basically blue. Try a different colour. And reveal a bit more of your neckline and shoulders as there's a bit of a shelf situation. I get the same if I wear high necked clothes.

icelolly12 · 29/08/2022 15:08

I like it, but not so keen on the puffy sleeve style, although it does mean you can also wear it in winter. I wouldn't put too much thought into what your teen says!

donttalkaboutbookclub · 29/08/2022 15:10

I think it looks good and if you like wearing it, wear it! It's often a bad idea to ask a ds or dh for an opinion in my experience...they sometimes will have a set idea of what they like you in.

swimmingincustard · 29/08/2022 15:13

I like it but I'd consider the colours autumn/winter so would prefer it with boots. Looks nice on you OP.

Hoppinggreen · 29/08/2022 15:14

Sorry but I think it makes your boobs look too big, which gives an overall frumpy look. I am a similar size and I won’t wear high necks or anything that hangs straight down from my boobs
The material is nice and if it had a v neck I think it would look better

Having said all that you look ok in it, not awful or anything. I just think you could look even better

mondaytosunday · 29/08/2022 15:14

The neckline isn't doing you any favours.

MRB2 · 29/08/2022 15:14

How does it fasten at the back? If it has a single button or neck tie, I always try wearing it back to front. It gives a slightly lower neckline, you can tuck the ends underneath too to create a high v shape.
