Frumpy or ok? Photo added

I bought this dress last summer and despite really liking it have only worn it once. As a larger lady I can sometimes struggle to feel like I look nice. DP says it’s ‘fine’ and 16 year old DS says it’s like something his grandma would wear! Is it awful? I know there are probably other things which are more flattering but I like the weight, the material and the length for certain occasions, so as long as it’s not awful I’ll carry on wearing it! 😂

Thanks ladies!

I've seen zillions of women of all ages wearing a version of that dress! That means that your DS and DH are talking bollocks when they say it's for old ladies. It means that you're buying dresses that are in style - this is a slightly tricky one because floaty flowery high necked midi dresses have been around for a while and are starting to go out again, but you bought it last year and there are still loads being produced so they're not really out yet either.

I suspect the reason you're getting all the boob comments is also to do with the camera angle - try retaking the photo straight on.

It’s ok but the neck is a bit high. I’d still wear it but with a longer necklace to give a lower ‘neckline’.

Definitely not awful - it’s nice - but it’s giving you a bit of a shelf bosom, at least at this angle - I think PP’s necklace idea is good to break that up

Also think the sandals really don’t work - they are too delicate and unbalance the look - trainers in summer, boots in winter.

Obimumkinobi · 29/08/2022 15:20

There's only the one photo to go on but looking at your hairstyle, lovely bright nails and sandals I think this colour and shape of dress is not inkeeping with the rest of your style. This could be why your son associates the dress with an older person and not his Mum.
Honestly, I wouldn't bother having it altered I'd just put it away for a few years.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/08/2022 15:25

… also I agree with pushing the sleeves up to 3/4 length

I wouldn’t take any notice of your son saying it looks grannyish - there are zillions of these dresses around, it’s just not a fashion that especially appeals to men.

I think the PP is right that judging by your hair, nails and sandals it’s probably not your usual style, and maybe that’s surprising for your son.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 29/08/2022 15:30

Pull the sleeves up and add a belt, maybe red or yellow belt?

MrsLeBouef · 29/08/2022 15:34

I like it but in future I would go for one with a v neck. I am the same shape and this works better.

maddiemookins16mum · 29/08/2022 15:40

You’re ‘big’ up top (like me 😀), a V-neck would be better.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 29/08/2022 15:41

A C cup? Umm...

Blowthemandown · 29/08/2022 15:41

@FriendOrFrump think it looks lovely, though the sleeves would annoy me and I’d make them 3/4!

stevalnamechanger · 29/08/2022 15:52

Needs a belt and heeled black suede boots IMO - perfectly autumn not sure about it for summer

KezzabellaB · 29/08/2022 15:53

I like it! You look lovely 😍

LunaLoveFood · 29/08/2022 15:53

I really like it, I think it just needs a belt.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/08/2022 15:58

Pretty sure you're not a C cup.

It makes your boobs look really big but it doesn't look awful. If it was a Vee neck it would look fantastic.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/08/2022 16:01

Try it with a jacket over, to break up the boob area.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/08/2022 16:01

Maybe try it with the sleeves shoved up a bit too?

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 29/08/2022 16:03

I'd wear it with a long pendant and an oversized denim jacket plus trainers or maybe boots. I like the style for tiered dresses and I like this one on you.

Icecreamandapplepie · 29/08/2022 16:09

I love it.

And you have perfect feet!

Candleabra · 29/08/2022 16:11

It’s a nice colour. Neckline is too high and makes you look really booby.
I’m not sure whether high round necks suit any shape really. I have tiny boobs so they look ok, but I still look better with a different neckline,

villamariavintrapp · 29/08/2022 16:26

Not awful

DanielTheGhostGangbanger · 29/08/2022 16:26

Definitely depends what you pair with it. This is one of those dresses that could look a bit frumpy with pretty heels. But with the sandals you're wearing, or boots in the winter, it looks much more youthful and trendy.

Your sandals are absolutely gorgeous by the way.

As a woman who's hefty in the boobage department herself, I also echo others re a V-neck. I'm not a fan of this neckline but that's mainly because I can't wear it myself. I think we need to see a different angle if you really are just a C cup as you look really top-heavy (but lovely) in this pic!

Nameandgamechange123 · 29/08/2022 16:29

I hate dresses but actually this looks great on your body type. Definitely don't wear a belt with it as some people suggest-that's just not cool. I like the high neck and sleeves. Really suits you.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 29/08/2022 16:30

Not keen sorry.

Geranium1984 · 29/08/2022 16:31

I like the dress but I think you'd suit a v neck better and would wear it with a belt.

yasminisa · 29/08/2022 16:32

I really like that dress OP, and I think yo look fab in it

Onlinetherapist · 29/08/2022 16:32

Someone mentioned a belt, perhaps a wide corset style one might show off your waist?
Roll the sleeves up a little? Xx
