OMG, are themed weddings a thing now?

You could go on Etsy and search for a 1990s dress/jumpsuit

supadupapupascupa · 18/08/2022 11:48

Depends on what you look like! But some ideas.....

If you're skinny a slip dress with boots
Tank tops with wrap skirts or combat trousers
Lots of chokers
Little black dresses
Tea dress with boots or platform trainers platform sandals

Makeup was gloss lips and glitter or goth eyes

Tiny back packs

supadupapupascupa · 18/08/2022 11:50

In my circle it friended in what music you listened to.
Rave
Heavy metal
Grunge
Country
Dance etc
We as kids seemed to identify with a tribe so maybe check out bands (band T-shirt would be great) and see what they wore

InTheFridge · 18/08/2022 11:55

God I'd fucking hate this.

Black and white parties are bad enough.

Trainers, leg warmers, lots of neon jewellery, work out sweat pants, vest top, curly hair in a ponytail.

Or white heels and a dress with either shoulder pads or really puffy sleeves

GoAround · 18/08/2022 11:59

How weird! Are they expecting you to still dress as of you’re going to a wedding, just one in the 90s (so like the outfits worn in Four Weddings) or is it just general 90s fancy dress? You don’t want to turn up in Ginger Spice’s union jack dress or a neon rave outfit if that’s not the vibe! I’d definitely want clarification for this one…

Greengr · 18/08/2022 11:59

I just taken loads of stuff to the charity shop! There was probably stuff even from the 80's!
I'm old and not skinnyConfused, the 90s seem ages ago.
Would a little black dress work and focus on the shoes, accessories and make up?
I hate these things!

Not really sure, think it's more wedding guest so not casual.
OMFG, I don't need this!

If maybe ask for a bit more clarification on what element of the 90s, as PPs have suggested.

On another note, can't believe they're having a 90s themed wedding, the 90s was only 5 mins ago (in my head! 🤣)

thefizz · 18/08/2022 12:04

Sorry now, I either would not go, or go and wear what I wanted and felt comfortable and nice in. Themes can be fkn damned! As if weddings weren't a big enough chore for outfit shopping as it is....

GoAround · 18/08/2022 12:04

If you have any shred of doubt I’d 100% do this.

stayinghometoday · 18/08/2022 12:05

The UK flag dress a la victoria beckham? Oversized jeans, doc martins, black band shirt, black hair, black choker and too much eyeliner?

I'm guessing that the B&G would rather have people wear cool clothes and not necessarily what we actually wore in the 90s

Greengr · 18/08/2022 12:15

Keep the ideas coming please🙏
If I go down the LBD ( what style of dress?)route, any ideas for shoes, accessories and make up please.Ideally high street and cheap. Haven't time to trawl charity shops.

I remember my mother wearing outfits similar to those in 4 Weddings and a Funeral, so very suit focused. Early 90s would have still looked very 80s so she wore double breasted jacket with shoulder pads, and a flowery skirt, court shoes plus a hat. Then I remember her wearing a bright coloured trouser suit in the later 90s to another wedding. I was a teen so wore baby doll dresses with a t-shirt underneath and chunky platforms.

I also remember French plaits being the go to hairstyle at early 90 weddings 😆

I would wear a 90s style black shift dress, suit jacket and a massive hat like Kirsten Scott Thomas in 4 weddings 😆

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 18/08/2022 12:43

I was 30 at the start of the 1990s. I can't even think what a "90s" theme would be. At work I wore smart, tailored skirt suits and out of work hippy dippy bucolic dresses from Monsoon and Laura Ashley.

LittleBearPad · 18/08/2022 12:43

Slip dress, bejewelled cardigan, crushed velvet?

knackeredagain · 18/08/2022 12:45

Something Laura Ashley-ish and a big hat

Crazykefir · 18/08/2022 12:47

You poor thing.
Kitten heals were in and platform heals.
Tiny colourful shoulder bags.
Lip gloss and lip liner.
I'd just do the makeup tbh.

UWhatNow · 18/08/2022 12:50

Leg warmers and jumpsuits? They weren’t 90s!

I can’t believe this so difficult…Just look at any episode of Friends!

Slinky slip dresses are all in fashion at the moment and totally 90s. Or Google Carolyn Bessett-Kennedy style.

Whataretheodds · 18/08/2022 12:53

Surely they don't mean '90s fancy dress'??

Wedding guests in the 90s: bias cut dress, any length but probably below the knee, with a pashmina or shimmery wrap, and hat or fascinator. Block sandals/mules or wedges.

Ooo you need a BIG hat or a 'blossom' hat! But agree look at 4 weddings for inspiration!

Sprig1 · 18/08/2022 13:00

Just wear what you would have worn if they hadn't imposed the ridiculous theme.

Shortpoet · 18/08/2022 13:05

Slip dress, pashmina and wedge sandals would work.

Pashminas were all the rage in mid 90s

I had an amazing pair of purple suede platform clogs in 90s. Couldn’t walk in them, but they were beautiful.

Even more glorious were some Patric Cox Jelly shoes with a snowstorm of the Eiffel Tower in them. I miss them so much!
