The easiest thing to do is channel the Spice Girls, and the easiest one is Posh. Bodycon black dress, black stilettos and a heap of makeup.

Moonflower12 · 18/08/2022 13:14

I got married in September 1991. Everyone wore floral LauraAshley style dresses and floppy straw hats. With the front turned up. Big puffy sleeves.

Weddings were more casual than nowadays. Not so Instagram!

MiddleAgedTraveller · 18/08/2022 13:16

Just dress as now and carry a Filofax
Dont indulge ridiculous themes

Ugh, The Spice Girls looked awful then and hasn't improved with age.

I had and still have a beautiful Laura Ashley cotton ballgown from the late 80s- very Tess of the D'Urberville. (Can't get into it)

On 31st December 1999 I wore this silk Laura Ashley ball skirt with a black velvet corset style top.

How hideous.

Go to H&M or New Look, most of it is straight out of the 99s at the moment. I've turned into my mum telling my kids 'ooh I used to have one just like that' at just about everything.

God I'd fucking hate this.

Black and white parties are bad enough.

Trainers, leg warmers, lots of neon jewellery, work out sweat pants, vest top, curly hair in a ponytail.

Or white heels and a dress with either shoulder pads or really puffy sleeves

Wrong decade! That was the 80s.

Lurkingandlearning · 18/08/2022 13:30

I think I might misunderstand and dress as if I’m in my 90’s and accessorise with a walking frame

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/08/2022 13:32

90's theme? I feels to me that we're still in it!

(What to borrow some clothes...?)

Vapeyvapevape · 18/08/2022 13:37

What fresh hell is this !! I found it hard enough to find a 'normal' dress for a wedding this year, let alone a themed one.
Its a bit daft really because unless you go all hip hop , dresses from the 90's aren't much different to ones you can buy today .

supadupapupascupa · 18/08/2022 13:41

Another idea might be silly top, loose fit trousers or opaque black tights and short pencil skirt with black suede flats. Lots of gold chains.
Suit jackets are good
Polka dot dresses too

SCRUNCHIES

supadupapupascupa · 18/08/2022 13:41

Hoop ear rings

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/08/2022 19:51

Slip dress or crushed velvet dress and DMs is pretty much what I wore in the early 90s.

NiqueNique · 18/08/2022 19:55

I think you should definitely take B*Witched as your inspiration. Grin

Sounds perfect , unfortunately I’m short and now fatter than I was in the 90s. Any ideas for an alternative black dress?

We’re you young in the 90s? Because puffy Laura Ashley dresses were very Sloane Ranger/new romantic/ Princess Di era in the 80s. Anyone wearing them in the 90s wouldn’t have epitomised the 90s… they were probably going out of fashion by then!

LittleBearPad · 18/08/2022 20:51

But the black velvet corset would have made it not Sloane ranger. If the top were similarly floofy then yes

FriedasCarLoad · 18/08/2022 20:53

Slip dress, choker, skinny eyebrows and lip gloss?

Gensola · 18/08/2022 20:57

Themed wedding is my idea of hell. I hate fancy dress, why can’t they just let the guests wear something they actually like and feel good in. I’d decline!

onemouseplace · 18/08/2022 20:58

Pashmina and a dress from Monsoon was how I dressed up in the 90s from memory.

LittleBearPad · 18/08/2022 21:02

A pashmina is key

Wish they’d come back!

Silverfinch · 18/08/2022 21:03

I would definitely want clarification on whether it's supposed to be 90s wedding guest or just 90s. It must be the latter surely as 90s wedding guest is a bit niche!

Amichelle84 · 18/08/2022 21:06

I'd personally google and search for 90s evening dresses. Slip dresses are 90s and everywhere at the moment. Look on places like Vinted, Etsy and Depop - you don't have to go tacky.

MarthaMayWhovier · 18/08/2022 21:16

Black slip dress and brown lipstick.

AliceMcK · 18/08/2022 21:21

Thinking of going out in the 90s, pedal pushers, leggings with tight body suites, chain belts, cargo pants, fluorescent blouses, I remember a blue gingham top with mini skirt, over the knee sock ensemble, I believe it’s quite fashionable these days as I saw my 24yo niece wearing almost the same outfit this summer. I couldn’t afford knee high boots so lots of over the knee socks, White jeans, long waistcoat/jacket trouser suits with blouses with big collars.

A lot of the stuff I wore in the 90s is about at the moment.

this coming from a northern pop Princess. Agree with others 90s was very driven by music styles, my DBs & their friends were hard core ravers so lots of bucket hats and baggy jeans, the girls in skimpy halter neck tops and hot pants.
