The UK flag dress a la victoria beckham? Oversized jeans, doc martins, black band shirt, black hair, black choker and too much eyeliner?

I'm guessing that the B&G would rather have people wear cool clothes and not necessarily what we actually wore in the 90s

Wash your mouth out - it was Geri not Victoria! How could you mistake the ginger vixen for the One Who Couldn't Sing? Grin

Did you grow up somewhere the 80's arrived a decade late? Grin

Also... even in the 80s no-one wore leg warmers to a wedding!

What about something like this tea dress with a pair of platform shoes?

Either have volume in your hair or put it up in a French pleat or messy bun and add some hair jewels.

Platform soles weren't a 90s thing.

AtomicBlondeRose · 19/08/2022 10:35

Platform trainers were definitely a thing in the 90s! There were really massive ones but the general trend was more the canvas style shoe with a really chunky sole. And I had huge chunky soled/ heeled loafer type shoes for school -very cool with stretchy bootcut trousers from New Look!

Platform soles may have existed in the 90s in much the same way they still exist now but they absolutely were not a standard, everyone wore them thing.

Again that might have existed but it really wasn't a general trend.

Platform trainers were definitely a 90s trend! The Spice Girls wore them and so did my friends. Massive thick ones from Shelley's.

They were a thing. They weren't a defining thing any more than platforms are now.

ColouringPencils · 19/08/2022 12:21

Well I haven't seen anyone wear them pre or post-90s, so if someone wore them to a 90s party I would think it a good fit.

InTheFridge · 18/08/2022 11:55

God I'd fucking hate this.

Black and white parties are bad enough.

Trainers, leg warmers, lots of neon jewellery, work out sweat pants, vest top, curly hair in a ponytail.

Or white heels and a dress with either shoulder pads or really puffy sleeves

Sportswear and shoulder pads? That's 1980s.
90s is grunge!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/08/2022 13:12

A strappy dress with 15 denier tights and then open toe sandals were all the rage for formal wear. Your make up would be important too- brown, pale, matte skin and loads of dark eyeshadow, filling the whole socket.

Then maybe a small, on shoulder handbag. Some fun accessories like friendship bracelets or ones with dummies on them would be good. Maybe a mood ring?

SwimmingOnEggshells · 19/08/2022 13:34

Also to say the dress should be very low cut, preferably wearing a wonderbra 😂

A choker would also work or pendant of a large crucifix, hair scraped back off your face, tied up, use gel.

Housewife2010 · 19/08/2022 13:47

I don't recognise any of these "looks". Some of my classic dresses from the late 90s that I wore for weddings would be very wearable now (if I could fit into them!)
If you watch Friends you'll see that a lot of Rachel's clothes were very classic and could be worn now.
Incidentally the idea of a fancy dress wedding would fill me with horror and is a big imposition on the guests.

shinynewapple22 · 19/08/2022 14:08

@TheLassWiADelicateAir whether or not you wore platform trainers in the 90s probably depends on how old you were at the time . I imagine the fashions worn by posters who were in their teens at the time was different to clothing worn by those in their 30s. I wore wedge sandals with a platform but didn't wear the trainers .

mangoontoast · 18/08/2022 13:30

Wrong decade! That was the 80s.

😵‍💫 I read it as the 1980's !!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2022 14:39

I pretty much wore DMs or Woolworths PE pumps! Black suede stiletto ankle boots for 'posh'.

mocktail · 19/08/2022 14:51

The Spice Girls wore platform trainers but I didn't know anyone in real life who did. (I was late teens to late 20s in the 90s) and lived in London and Manchester.)

ChobKnees · 19/08/2022 15:50

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 18/08/2022 22:36

It's an odd decade to pick. I don't think there's a distinctive 1990s look. The 20s, 50s and 60s have the most distinct style and loads of people still wear 50s and 60s styles. The better stuff from the 70s is not dissimilar from 2022 long dresses. 80s is irredeemably awful.

If I still had my 1990s neat tailored suits and Laura Ashley and Monsoon dresses the only reason I wouldn't wear them now is because they don't fit. I still have one Monsoon dress and a Jackpot Carly Gris dress from the early/mid 90s I can still fit into. They are just long, button through floral dresses. They're very pretty but don't look any different from loads of 2022 dresses.

The 90's definitely had fashion trends. Why do you think so many people are saying the 90's fashion is back in now?

Early 90's:
Big floppy hats
Waistcoats
Long slip style dresses with buttons on front
Lots of floral and velvet clothing
French plaits
Headbands

Late 90's:
T-shirt under dresses
Glitter in hair and makeup
Tracksuits - kappa, ellese
Bucket hats
Chokers
Trousers with skirts over the top
Jelly shoes
Canvas heel shoes
Cami/tank tops
Lots of slogan tops (Tammy Shop)
High neck vests

None of those things are defining in the way 1920s flapper dresses or 50s dresses or 60s hippy gear is. Most of what you've listed didn't go away rather than come back.

Yes I was a teen!! Had the big platform trainers and also platform shoes.

Probably because like the 90s is a fashion influence now, the 70s was a fashion influence in the 90s.

It's a circular just slightly different each time. So platforms were definitely a thing in the 90s.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2022 16:52

Oh gods, yes - big, velvet floppy hats from Camden market. I'd forgotten those!

Uma Thurman from Pulp Fiction? White shirt and black trousers - you just need the black bob. Grin

Patsy or Edina from Ab Fab? Or Saffie?

Uma Thurman from Pulp Fiction gets my vote, iconic look, really flattering and you can now buy the Chanel Vamp nail varnish again.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/08/2022 17:11

But it's presumably not actual fancy dress? Just a general 90s vibe? Or have I misunderstood?
