I've been butchered

I asked the hairdresser for a pixie cut. Showed her a photo and everything.

She's practically shaved my head. I didn't realise it was happening as she came to my home and I foolishly didn't set up a mirror so I could see what was going on. She's cut my hair once before. Never again. I have about half an inch all over. Half a fucking inch. Yes, I paid her - just to get her out of my house before I did something irreversible and possibly criminal.

I realise I just have to live with it and allow it to grow out. I've got a few cotton scarves that I will now wear round my head for the next few months.

Fuckssake. I'm not even sure why I'm posting, except to have someone understand why I'm upset. OH says "it'll grow back" and "it's not that bad"....I just want to wail..

Missing the point of the thread but I now really want to get rid of all my hair… it really is a pain in the arse! I can see why you’re so upset OP, I do agree that it won’t take long to look lovely though. When I was a teenager my hairdresser made me look like a badger with black and white streaks (not what I asked for obvs). DH thought it was hilarious and still brings it up now.

ShirleyJackson · 06/08/2022 07:43

@ReeseWitherfork do it! It’s so liberating, I can’t tell you. It takes me no time to get ready in the morning, and there’s no time spent wondering wtf my hair is doing throughout the day.

When I think of the drying, the straightening, the brushing…nah. Life’s too short!

I love your name, btw.

Baldieheid · 06/08/2022 08:22

Much as I still hate this particular cut, I have to agree with Shirley. I've done both long and short and whilst I'm currently being all melodramatic and vowing never to have it cut again, I know I won't grow it longer than jaw length short again.

If you've always had long hair, can you somehow filter a photo to give yourself short hair, just to see if you like how it looks?

I’ve had short hair for forty years and I’ve had quite a few bad cuts. My current hairdresser is excellent, thank goodness, or I’d have shaved my head by now and I don’t think I can carry it off (still tempted though, for the freedom and the velveteen feel).

One of the worst cuts I’ve had was just before my graduation - left me with an incredibly short almost flat-top, and when I put the mortar-board on I looked like I had no hair. It was a shit haircut, I felt like the stylist had deliberately taken the piss (yes, a tad paranoid but I was really upset).

That looks like a decent cut from your picture, OP, it should grow out nicely. For styling wax, I rate Aveda control paste. Expensive, but you only need the tiniest amount so it lasts for ages.

AwkwardSquad · 06/08/2022 09:04

And it also looks like you’ve got good hair, with a decent amount of body. Mine’s fine and quite thin so I have to mess about with styling it. Another reason to shave the fecking stuff off.

@OddSocksandRainbowDocs

I'm glad you have found a good one!

I am on haircut 2 with a new hairdresser and so far so good!
I have been to so many hairdressers over the last 40+ years and only a few have listened & tried to do what I ask for.

So many hairdressers are really overconfident, self professed experts who claim to know everything about my hair without listening.

The most common mistake they make is when they say 'OOOh, aren't you lucky to have such thick straight, hair, I'll thin it out when I've got the shape..."
No, you won't! I have loads of very fine hair, thinning it out makes it whispy and flyaway - It is also very wavy but thanks to the magic of hairbrushes and straighteners, it looks straight when both wet & dry.

So many have been utterly confused when they watch it frizz up uncontrollably when they have 'thinned it out' and attempt to dry it.

L I S T E N. T O. M E !
I have lived with my annoying hair for decades and you have only just met me!

@EntertainingandFactual I bet that is so frustrating!

The worst one I had gave me a full fringe that was lopsided! No word of a lie, there was about an inch difference from one side compared to the other. The only reason I didn't notice is because she cut it wet, blow dryed it and then curled it with straighteners. I was a teenager, very naive and obviously thought she knew best Grin

u need one of those 1940 land girl headscarf’s.the tea dance ones.

Baldieheid · 07/08/2022 10:38

Just had an amazon delivery of some rather nice head scarves. I'm off to tesco, looking like a pirate! How cool am I....

ReeseWitherfork · 07/08/2022 11:05

I hope that means you’ve got an eye patch and a parrot on your shoulder too. Supermarkets attract some colourful characters generally so I doubt you’d look out of place.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 07/08/2022 11:22

Photo! I love headscarves, I have a collection from when I started losing my hair. I have always lusted over a Hermès silk scarf, but apart from the fact I could never afford one silk is too slippy to stay on my head Grin

I bet your head is nice and cool Baldie!

ClinkeyMonkey · 07/08/2022 11:36

Just came on to say @Baldieheid, your username is brilliant! I know you've had a haircut you hate, but it's good to keep your sense of humour😃

@ShirleyJackson you have the perfect face for short hair. I would look like a sad, slightly deflated balloon.

Oh OP! Been there loads of times. I love my short hair but it's awful when they go too short. However, from experience I too think it's only a couple of weeks from where you are to what you wanted. Use volumising powder (I like the Got2b one), make it stick up then sweep to the side, wear make-up and/or a necklace (if you're into that - your ref pic woman looks v feminine partly because of this), avoid wearing men's shirts (or army gear Grin) for a bit and it will be fine.

Baldieheid · 07/08/2022 15:37

I've picked up volumising powder this morning, and a styling wax, thanks for that! At the length it is now, I'm just going to cover it for the next week or two whilst I work out what I'm doing. I'm not a product user normally so this is a new direction for me. Thank crunchie for Youtube. I'm also extremely bah humbug about my appearance now and don't usually bother with makeup now, so that's going to change too. I used to care. I used to wear nice makeup and do my hair properly and put some effort in. Then depression and elderly parent care responsibilities took over and I lost myself completely. This may actually be a bit of a blessing in that it's revealed my mood improving. I haven't bothered with my appearance (beyond hygiene) since 2007. The fact I care about it is good, as 10 or even 5 years ago, I could not have cared less.

Thanks again for the pep talks and the advice on how to style it etc, I really do appreciate everyone's input and will definitely be putting a bit of effort into myself from now on. This has been a kick up the bahookie that I needed. Thursday I wanted to curl up and wail, today that's no more xx

Re silk scarves - I saw a video on youtube which showed the girl using a hollow tube of jersey to cover her head first (it fitted tightly) then she wore the scarf about that. The scarf was pinned to her jersey snood. Channel is called "Wrapunzel" and she has loads of ideas for headscarves.

DFOD · 07/08/2022 18:53

You have great bone structure and lovely skin from that photo. A tinsy bit of tinted moisturiser or natural bronze blush is all you need to feel more radiant and confident about yourself.

Coniferhedge · 07/08/2022 19:04

That scarf looks really cool! Off to have a gander at Amazon myself now.

Benjispruce4 · 07/08/2022 22:48

OP it’s fogging to be hot (are you in England?) so a big floppy hat and some shades will look chic. Or even just shades are good to hide behind while you gain confused with the length. I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if I saw you, it’s all in your head but I do understand. Be brave!

Benjispruce4 · 07/08/2022 22:48

noodlezoodle · 08/08/2022 00:13

You look lovely although I know it's very much NOT what you asked for! I think you'd look amazing with a Rosie the Riveter style headscarf:

When I had a too-short haircut I wore a lot of silk scarves but my hair is really slippy, so I used to wear one of these under the scarf - worked brilliantly to keep things in place.

I also recommend adding bright lipstick and maybe a pair of strong-framed glasses if you fancy rocking a 'lewk'.

darisdet · 08/08/2022 02:58

I like the headscarf, OP, but the sticking out bits of hair remind me of my doll when I cut her fringe too short! Many years ago now.

Second the headband idea. I'm sure it will look fine in a couple of weeks as most people have said.

Imevery · 08/08/2022 15:51

OP I have very short hair. When it’s cut it seems shorter than the next day when I style it myself (although I appreciate you’re a few days on now).

I thought you looked great in the picture you posted, but styling wax is your friend. You can also get away with a bit of dramatic eye make up.

Coronilla · 10/08/2022 09:13

Your headscarf looks fab - I really like the fringy bits sticking out.

Cam22 · 10/08/2022 10:01

I like it - what I can see of it! Wear pretty makeup and dress in a cool, swishy way and you will rock it.

(I wouldn’t wear the scarves.)
