I've been butchered

I asked the hairdresser for a pixie cut. Showed her a photo and everything.

She's practically shaved my head. I didn't realise it was happening as she came to my home and I foolishly didn't set up a mirror so I could see what was going on. She's cut my hair once before. Never again. I have about half an inch all over. Half a fucking inch. Yes, I paid her - just to get her out of my house before I did something irreversible and possibly criminal.

I realise I just have to live with it and allow it to grow out. I've got a few cotton scarves that I will now wear round my head for the next few months.

Fuckssake. I'm not even sure why I'm posting, except to have someone understand why I'm upset. OH says "it'll grow back" and "it's not that bad"....I just want to wail..

I am sadly very plain, and very not-brave. Hence today's meltdown.

I feel your pain. Happened to me years ago. It’s probably the shock because it looks quite good. Be brave , slick in some bold lipstick and own it.

AhaLyn · 04/08/2022 22:38

Sorry op I hope it grows out quick but your username made me chuckle after a bad day x

AhaLyn · 04/08/2022 22:39

@Benjispruce4 i agree, don’t wear scarves just wear some nice lipstick and or earrings

says me that would wear a sombrero

Dinneronmybfpillow · 04/08/2022 22:39

As a teen I took a pic of a very choppy, well styled Winona Ryder to the hairdresser and came out looking like a block bobbed Lego woman.

Thankfully my friend's mum caught us before we tried to fix it with box dye and her hairdressing scissors. She re-styled it and gave me highlights and didn't charge me a penny.

As a stylist I can’t see how you wouldn’t sorry!

What? Confused

You think because you're a stylist you somehow have special abilities to tell who looks like a man and who doesn't, over the internet? No wonder so many people on this thread have complained about the poor work hairstylists have done for them.

I have short hair - always clippered; I've occasionally had a buzz cut (when I was young with cheekbones and could pull it off), and my hair now is shorter than the OP's. No one ever thinks I'm a man or look like a bloke. I wouldn't give a toss if they did, but they don't.

I think the OP will look great, and I imagine she'll learn from now that you have to watch what hairstylists do, rather than trusting them to do the job they were asked for.

Spookysparkles · 04/08/2022 23:11

Okay, it’s not really like the photos, but you could run a semi permanent colour through it to give it some depth, style with product and use straighteners to curve the fringe slightly so it’s less spiky. In a month you will definitely be happier.
this may not be your thing - but maybe get some lashes done or lvl lash lift, I always think the wide eyed gamine look with the lashes and short hair is particularly fab.
Really not that bad, but I get it- it’s hard when you are disappointed with your hair do 💐

Cocolapew · 04/08/2022 23:46

Using clippers doesn't give you a 'man cut' ffs, stop taking nonsense 🙄
I cut my own hair and always use the clippers. The guard popped off once and I didn't notice until I had done 2 lines up the back of my head 🤦, it only took 2 weeks before it had grown back in.

Cocolapew · 04/08/2022 23:51

I would style it like this, with the fringe pushed to the side

I've never had this happen to me, but Sabrina the Teenage witch's best friend had a bad haircut and walked round for weeks repeating her mantra of "hair grows"

This made me laugh out loud! Nostalgia 😊

HoneyFlowers · 05/08/2022 08:41

I bet everyone has had a bad haircut at some point, I've had two! One time I asked for longer layers on top and gradually getting shorter going down. After washing my hair she must have got muddled up and I had short spikey hair on top and a mullet! I was devastated and took 6 months to sort out. The other time I asked for shorter hair (another stylist) and god knows why she cut it super short up the back to where the skull pokes out a bit and same length on top so looked like a lampshade!

I have finally found a hairdresser who actually cuts pretty soft layered cuts!

allsubstancenostyle · 05/08/2022 09:07

I've had short hair all my life.

So fed up with having to deal with the inconsistency of hairdressers (same person, different cut; same cut, different person; cheap, expensive - doesn't matter) that I now clip it myself.

Terrified the first time, but I now get to cut, trim, tidy, experiment a totally bespoke hair cut exactly to my liking. Whenever I want. Lockdowns no problem !

Only limit is clipper length, so currently 4cm on top and 3cm sides and back.

Flowers to you, OP, you are not alone in your predicament !

I've thought about doing that, as I have clippers for DH, but I couldn't find longer guards. Do you mind telling me where you got yours? I've got Wahl(?) branded clippers.

Ccoffee · 05/08/2022 11:40

I had this happen, two days before a job interview. It was such a brutal cut and I didn't have the face shape to really carry it off.

I got the job, which was a quick start date, and had it immortalised on my security pass photo Grin

It grew fast though, just style it a bit with wax etc and it's soon a bit softer.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 05/08/2022 12:17

@Baldieheid Your hair is a beautiful shade, is that natural? It's really pretty with the silvery highlights look. I agree with PP who said get some product in it and sweep the top to the side. Why don't you post a photo after you've done it as I'm sure you would get some reassurance after the "yeah sorry you look like a bloke" replies Grin@ShirleyJackson (also gorgeous) is living proof you don't automatically look like a bloke with very short hair!

If it's any consultation I have a part shaved head as in "close shaved with normal razor" completely bald scalp, not clippers with a guard style short. I have never been misgendered Grin and actually get a lot of compliments (hopefully I don't sound vain, just reassurance that shaved head women don't automatically look like a man/butch/a marine Grin) I absolutely love it, takes me two (albeit very careful) minutes in the shower shaving it every other day, I'm using the same bottle of hair conditioner I opened in December Grin so saves me a fortune, and it's lovely and cool in the hot weather. Also DH kisses the nape of my neck and it feels really nice Smile

Restyle it and post a photo, you know you will get honest replies here Wink and it will make you feel a lot better, l'm sure.

PS Whoever said they are a stylist and short hair automatically makes women look like men, clearly you are a shit stylist if you think that.

BeenthereGotTee · 05/08/2022 12:20

It's not as bad as I imagined but I do see your point.

Sexnotgender · 05/08/2022 12:23

Fucking hell, I hope you suit hats?!

I feel your pain, hairdresser did similar to me last year. Except mine was like a curly bowl cut, absolutely AWFUL. My husband had to make me promise not to shave the whole lot off.

allsubstancenostyle · 05/08/2022 13:06

@Belovedfool Ooh, I'm envious of Wahl. Rather embarrassingly, I only use either some Remingtons I got years ago from Amazon (44mm) or - worse - a set from Lidl (41mm) !! I think they are probably beard/hair trimmers designed for men, but they do the job. I use scissors to shape the sides. I style out the odd 'hiccup' with gel !! Youtube and extreme caution got me through styling in the early days !

Yes, it's natural. I'm desperate for it to turn properly silver but atm the dark is hanging on. I'd love to be silver all over and thought by my mid 50s I'd be closer than I am. Still, thank you for the nice comments x

I'm going to buy some styling stuff later, I've been worming my way through the mens products on the boots website to work out what might work for me.

I'm over the shock now. I still hate it and it's under a scarf today but it will all be fine in a few weeks.

Thanks all x

Love your hair, it suits you so much

Coniferhedge · 05/08/2022 20:42

@Baldieheid If it’s any help, I find these two really good. One a bit more expensive than the other, but both do the job. Also, I agree - your hair is a lovely colour. It could be worse - I’m blonde and have glasses, leading to my nickname being Su Pollard.🙄😁

In 2000 I asked for a Victoria Beckham pixie. I looked like Des from Neighbours

ReviewingTheSituation · 05/08/2022 22:40

With a bit of product (a soft wax, or maybe serum) through it, it will look lovely. I'd embrace it and ditch the scarf. That will attract a lot more attention than a short hair cut.
I have a short pixie which has been shorter than I'd like, but it softens SO quickly. Within a week it will feel quite different. Hang in there!
