Mother of groom dress

Is this print nice or is it like a pair of old ladies curtains? If it’s relevant, I’m a fairly young MoG (44) size 10-12 & 5’6 I have long dark hair & will be tanned from holiday. I was thinking hair loose with a cream padded headband.

Completely different option is the black with a black headband or hat. The bride & groom don’t mind me wearing black as they’re not traditional at all.

Crafty Gin - beautiful outfit, classy.
That is more my idea of MOG.

But surely @CraftyGin‘s suggestion is typical MOG - this isn’t what the OP is looking for. She wants something modern and fitting of her age.

Oh do fuck off, dear. I'm not your dear.

Sorry OP I don't think either of those dresses is appropriate as MOTG. I'm same age as you, so understand you font want to wear traditional MOTG attire. What about something like this:

Sorry, but that is horrible and also looks really cheap.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/07/2022 15:07

@CraftyGin 's outfit is a million miles away from the sort of vibe the OP is hoping for. I'm glad you found something you loved, Crafty, but it's very traditional and I don't think it's at all what the OP is looking for.

Hi OP,

The website is Sika. The designer is based in the UK and all clothing made in Ghana. It's an independent and such wonderful dresses. Here's a few, but check out the website.

Sika has beautiful dresses.

It looks like an outfit Carol Middleton would wear. There's nothing wrong with it and it's miles better than the caped crusader outfits but it's bland. The Sika dresses and the suggestion by Piccolo are far more interesting.

Enough. This is supposed to be a nice thread about dresses.

2pinkginsplease · 31/07/2022 15:19

The red midi length dress is stunning!

I definitely wouldn’t go for a dress above the knee for the wedding of your son/daughter.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/07/2022 15:42

I shall be the MoG in September. It's a difficult month because it could be hot or distinctly nippy. My imperatives as MoG are:

  1. Not to outshine the MoB
  2. Shoulders covered
  3. Something that works in the heat or the cold.
  4. Something that can be worn again.

I am far removed from traditional MoB/G wear. Initially I was set on silk trousers and a tunic type coat but couldn't get the top right in the event the tunic had to come off because of the weather. I went down the shibumi rabbit hole but decided it wasn't me and suddenly could see it on too many women of 50 and above at the opera or the races giving an obvious outfit a second outing.

Eventually I plumped for a violet lace dress with sleeves and a flattering cut under the bust. If it's hot I can wear it on it's own. If it's nippy I bought a lightweight velvet tunic in violet/reds/blues/pinks which sounds awful but is divine, works brilliantly with the frock and will work for years to come as a evening jacket/coat for a variety of events.

It was eyewateringly expensive but if the dress gets four outings and the tunic, probably 20, then on a cost per wear basis it will be a whole lot cheaper than a £395 frock that gets worn once.

Just need the sodding shoes and bag now. Waiting for the autumn stock to come in.

Not sure if this is your taste but what do you think of these. Not frumpy, classy but sexy too.

Now these are perfect!

RosesAndHellebores · 31/07/2022 15:48

In my opinion the mother of the groom does not need to be sexy. The last one has bare shoulders and is therefore wholly inappropriate for a church wedding in my opinion.

All three of those outfits strike me as nouveau north London rather than classy to be honest.

Hardbackwriter · 31/07/2022 15:51

My imperatives as MoG are:

Not to outshine the MoB

Is this a thing? I obviously know about the requirement that all guests try not to upstage the bride, but I didn't realize that the bride's mother was supposed to be more centre-stage than the groom's and that the groom's mother is supposed to make sure that the mother of the bride looks nicer?! Surely they don't normally even know what each other is wearing?

These all look rather dated imo. Not loving any of them.

I was arguing fiercely on another thread that "dated" was a silly idea - you either like something or you don't.

But, yes, those dresses do look dated (although that style of dress has never appealed to me)

An online shop called JJHouse.

Their dresses are made to measure.

Thank you

The red self portrait dress is perfect - but I also love the original reformation dress - also have a peek at rixo dresses - lush x

Yes - agree that 'dated' is a bit of a silly word, but I couldn't think of another that fit what I was trying to say!

So, the red midi dress is out of stock in my size & the size above & I did a u turn on the pink. I’ve ordered this instead. There is also a tailored boucle dress I like that I’m envisaging with a navy hat.

To clarify a few points, I don’t just like dark colours, I like bold reds & greens too. Pastels are a no go though. I also won’t be wearing a fascinator, it’ll be a hat or headband.

As an aside can anyone remember the other MoG thread where it was a gay wedding & the woman wanted to wear a ruffled dress from needle & thread. People lost their minds at how she dare even consider wearing such a bold outfit. I mean who makes these rules?
