I think that speech she made at the beginning of the covid pandemic was just excellent - so calm and reassuring, a figure of unity, encouraging resilience and determination.

I agree Maireas. Even my DP, who is a fervent Republican, was visibly moved by that speech.

LadyEloise1 · 08/09/2022 17:45

Amazing to think the first Prime Minister of the Queen's reign was Winston Churchill born in 1874 and the latest Prime Minister she met just the other day, Liz Truss, was born in 1975. Quite a span.

The Queen made such an amazing effort when she visited Ireland. So much history and bad blood between the two countries, it was appreciated by many here.

Wow! That's actually incredible!

Sure is incredible!

I hear through our local grapevine HMQ's bagpipers have just left to fly up there 😢

gluenotsoup · 08/09/2022 18:10

She has had such a remarkable life and reign, the details like that are mind blowing really, regardless of any views held. I think how she has grown and evolved into what she represents now is fabulous. So many people have never known another monarch, and the twinkle in her eye, her connection to generations gone by and the best of what they stood for plus sheer stoicism and duty has endeared her to many.

Evenin', Tracy.
Question - aren't the pipers always in Scotland?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 08/09/2022 18:26

@Maireas well that's what I thought but I'm just going by what I've been told (as quite a few of the bagpipers work round here)
I'm being specifically vague on purpose if you get my drift.

I really hope it's just more of a case of getting them ready/prepped if they need to go there asap.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 08/09/2022 18:34

Just this minute it's been announced that HMQ passed this afternoon 😢

gingercat02 · 08/09/2022 18:35

The Queen is dead. Long live the King. She passed this afternoon
Hope the family made it in time.

SenecaFallsRedux · 08/09/2022 18:37

RIP Your Majesty

We'll toast Elizabeth - resilient, modest, dutiful - and stylish! -to the end. 🥃

Rest in Peace. May her family and those who loved her, and those whom she loved, find peace amidst the grief.

How lovely that little Paddington sketch was...

I know that’s a silly thing to talk about at such a time, but I thought it was so lovely and showed such gentle humour.

NiqueNique · 08/09/2022 18:50

Paddington Bear, that is.

Eaumyword · 08/09/2022 18:51

Indeed @Maireas.

justasking111 · 08/09/2022 18:52

I'm so glad we saw that sweet face and smile one last time 😢

Serenster · 08/09/2022 18:56

I genuinely love the photo the Royal Family account used to illustrate their announcement - a lovely picture of an old woman that still shows the young woman she once was. Will definitely drink a toast to her tonight.

It was lovely to see her smiling on Tuesday with her photo of her appointing Liz Truss.

I can't believe HMQ has gone.
She's always been there!
But at least she's reunited with her Philip.
I can quite imagine he was at the pearly gates waiting for her & saying "There you are Cabbage" (his pet name for Elizabeth)

RIP Your Majesty

I can join in that toast. RIP HMQ.

NiqueNique · 08/09/2022 19:02

Such a beautiful image.

QueryA · 08/09/2022 19:22

Rest in peace queen elizabeth. It’s not unexpected but very sad news nonetheless. I hope her family take comfort from how well loved and respected she was.

LadyEloise1 · 08/09/2022 19:58

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

An Irish blessing.
The Queen made such an effort to speak Irish at a banquet in her honour at Dublin Castle when she visited Ireland in 2011.
Very impressive.

Gooseysgirl · 08/09/2022 20:16

Rest in peace HMQ 😢

Oh it's so sad, I thought when they said the family were travelling up there that it wasn't going to be good news, but I feel surprisingly tearful about it. Reunited with Phillip. Someone on the radio called her Elizabeth the Great, and I think that's fitting.
