Do I chop it off?!

I have had long hair for years and years. I've just booked a hair appointment for the first time in about three years and I fancy something different.

I am really fat. Really really overweight. So I feel like short hair makes my face look rounder/fatter BUT with my long thin hair I also feel like I look like a bit of a slob as well. My hair is thin and the ends are terrible. I really wish I could go into a hairdressers and tell them to do what they want - something that will make me look amazing but they all stare blankly and say 'it's up to you'. So I get two inches off and go about my day. I want something different this time!

I've just been trying dresses on so my daughter took a pic of me - I don't generally have any pics of me so this is probably the best I can do.

Do I chop it off?!

I am a plus size girl too.

anything short than shoulder length adds roundness to the face and can be very aging. I would go for something like the pics below and I would get a balayage to add dimension.

I’ve had long and short hair and omg the times I cut it short it added 10 years and 2 stone!

I'd go for something like this

I agree, this would really suit you.

Good luck at the hairdressers.

Maybe I'm an anomaly but shorter hair (a good cut, mind) makes me look younger, and a lot less knackered.

Fatandnearly50 · 05/07/2022 08:57

I also like @Desolate2nite ’s picture. You wouldn’t have to blow dry it on a day to day but could when you had time.

Personally I won’t go shorter that sitting on the shoulders to hide the double/triple chin a bit.

Looking forward to seeing an after picture 😊

I never know what to do with my hair, and whenever I ask the hairdressers to do what they think will look good they just stare blankly at me too! You’d think they’d relish the chance to be creative? I like to ask them as they’re the experts, but I guess they’re scared I won’t like their ideas…

Had that reaction too but then I heard that you pay for a restyling appointment rather than a haircut for something like that.

I never have. These stylists sound right chancers!

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

This is an example of a price list showing the difference in an ordinary hair cut appointment and a restyling one:
(I'm not affiliated with this place whatsoever) www.cocoon.co.uk/price-lists/hair-price-list/

£44 for a wash cut and blow dry
£54 for a restyle

I've seen this in many places.

An extra tenner for them to suggest something new which would take all of 5 mins?!

Iamnotamermaid · 05/07/2022 10:12

Your hairdresser ought to have some suggestions rather than it is up to you.

But I do think you could benefit from 3-4 inches off. Blunt ends, maybe not layering but something to break it up. fringe could work depending on face shape.

I go in with pictures (google hairstyles & take photos) of styles I like, and also what I don't like, do they get a feel for where the comfort zone is.

ArabeI · 05/07/2022 10:23

I wouldn't go bob length, but a few inches off will make it look and feel thicker.

Good luck!

ApolloandDaphne · 05/07/2022 10:30

I too think a glossy shoulder length look would be great on you.

RMS0209 · 05/07/2022 10:58

I'd get a few layers chop a few inches off and some highlights/balayage?

Ps lovely dress x

niki26 · 05/07/2022 11:39

Ok, thanks all. The appointment was for cut only but I am definitely going to go back and discuss colour as some of the suggestions here have sounded really good to me.

It was lovely to have a little pamper away from the children!

Soo.....here it is......not the best picture I'm afraid. It's weird not having loads of hair but it feels so much healthier.

It looks lovely. Much thicker and I love the fringe.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/07/2022 11:45

Looks great!

RaspberryChouxBuns · 05/07/2022 11:50

Looks lovely!

sleepyhoglet · 05/07/2022 11:56

It's hanging limply. Don't get rid of all the length but have it layered to give volume and maybe just under the shoulders

Yorkshirelass04 · 04/07/2022 15:49

I think about 3 inches off, some layers and balayage. I'd never be in favour of cutting it all off I'm afraid! Longer hair is more
Versatile

agree.

averythinline · 05/07/2022 12:06

Looks great.....and adding a bit of colour can also help thinner hair...although looks thicker in that picture .

OompaLoompaa · 05/07/2022 12:22

Your hair looks lovely.

OompaLoompaa · 05/07/2022 12:23

It looks like you still have lots of hair as it looks thicker and really healthy.
