Do I chop it off?!

I have had long hair for years and years. I've just booked a hair appointment for the first time in about three years and I fancy something different.

I am really fat. Really really overweight. So I feel like short hair makes my face look rounder/fatter BUT with my long thin hair I also feel like I look like a bit of a slob as well. My hair is thin and the ends are terrible. I really wish I could go into a hairdressers and tell them to do what they want - something that will make me look amazing but they all stare blankly and say 'it's up to you'. So I get two inches off and go about my day. I want something different this time!

I've just been trying dresses on so my daughter took a pic of me - I don't generally have any pics of me so this is probably the best I can do.

I agree, a shoulder length cut with a fringe would suit you and hopefully build up your confidence.
I disagree with you, though - you are not "really fat", you are really shapely. I think that dress is fabulous on you!

itsmeagainagain · 04/07/2022 18:27

It definitely could do with a chop which will make it look thicker… I agree with the long bob suggestions 👍 I love that dress you look fab

unsync · 04/07/2022 18:28

Be brave. Go for a pixie. It's very liberating cutting it all off.

collieresponder88 · 04/07/2022 18:31

love your dress where is it from please ? I think a good few inches off and layers round the front would be lovely

OldTinHat · 04/07/2022 18:31

Just here to say that you're rocking that dress! You look fabulous 👌

Stevie6 · 04/07/2022 18:35

A short blunt bob is not always good on thin/fine hair it can be really flat (I have this hair type). I wouldn't have too much cut off in one go, how about collar bone length with some layers and a side fringe?

You are not really, really overweight. And that dress is lovely on you.

I would be tempted to chop your hair between chin & bust, on that photo to you where your cleavage begins, and get some choppy layers. It’ll appear thicker because it won’t be so weighed down.

I agree ,on all points 😊

This is 100% true. If your hair is as above, a short blunt bob is not what you want.

Favouritefruits · 04/07/2022 18:45

I love the chocolate colour of your hair I wouldn’t touch the colour, I think a ‘lob’ cut blunt edges with a side fringe.

You look lovely, that's a really nice dress and looks great on you.

I'm a similar size to you and used to have long straight hair too. I got so fed up of it and was just doing nothing with it. I found it a pain having such long hair so decided to have it cut into a bob. Despite all the worries about having short hair when fat I ending up loving it! So I went even further and now have a pixie cut.
Turns out i do have the face shape for it. After the initial shock of it, I now feel so confident and absolutelylove it. Plus it's so easy to look after, takes minutes to dry and style. I'm not going back now, just wish I'd done it years ago.
I'm also not bothered that other people think short hair makes you look older or isn't for bigger people because that's not been my experience at all. It was liberating after years of thinking it was off limits for someone like me.

So I say go for it, have some much shorter if you want to. Try it and if you don't like it then it grows back and you've learnt something about yourself.

Also remember that weight loss is lovely but you're worthy just as you are right now. Be kind to yourself.

People always advise people with your type of hair to get layers. But I have similar hair and layers just make it look finer and more flyaway. A blunt cut makes it look thickest.

I agree with you. I went the layers route and my hair went in at the layer and then out again and looked weird, and thinner. Like a pp, I blow dry my hair upside down, but I use voluminising spray on roots first and use a diffuser on my hairdryer and barely touch it afterwards. It’s made my hair look much thicker. So something to play around with, OP

Agree.

Also agree.

The solution is a blunt cut touching or below shoulder length. This means it waves slightly due to touching the shoulders.

pimlicoanna · 04/07/2022 19:20

I have no hair advice other than a little shorter I think. But the dress looks lovely on you

Floralnomad · 04/07/2022 19:35

I have very fine hair but I have layers because I’m not aiming for thick I’m aiming for not just hanging all lank IYSWIM . Nothing you do to my hair will ever make it look thick .

HarryPopper · 04/07/2022 19:43

You're really harsh on yourself, your hair looks healthy and your body has a good shape and structure. The cut of the dress is good on you but I don't think white is your colour. I agree with shoulder or below shoulder haircut and some colour in it. Don't chop it all off it will take ages to grow and it will feel naked without some hair draping around your shoulders and back.

FolornLawn · 04/07/2022 19:54

Nice frock, OP, it's giving you a shapely waist.

I'm a similar size to you and I find that a bob needs to stop at mid-neck for me. Any longer and it drags my face down into my shoulders and gives me a pin head.

Sunnytwobridges · 04/07/2022 19:55

I don't think you should do a fringe, I think they are a lot of upkeep. Definitely layers, some highlights, and take the length off to right below your shoulders. I feel like bobs usually look good with people with longer necks. You have a shorter neck like mine and I dont look good in a bob unless it's extremely poofy.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/07/2022 20:30

I would advise against a fringe too, they're really hard work. I instantly regret getting one done.

Desolate2nite · 04/07/2022 20:55

I'd go for something like this

Do I chop it off?!
ladygindiva · 04/07/2022 20:58

I would avoid layers, my hairdresser has put layers in my hair to thin it out, as it's extremely thick. She says she wouldnt layer fine hair it makes it look thinner.

Desolate2nite · 04/07/2022 21:14

@ladygindiva totally agree. Layering right through will make it look thin, forward graduation adds softness around the face and is easier to style yourself

jackstini · 04/07/2022 21:24

I would go medium length and a split or side fringe if you want one

Maybe just a few low layers, get some slices of colour in to make it look more textured and practice easy ways of getting waves - bathrobe bent, socks etc. (YouTube them!)

Couple of ideas here

You have a great hourglass look in that dress too!

minipie · 04/07/2022 17:21

I suggest

Just past shoulder length

No layers - if you have thin straight hair layers are not good.

Highlights - these add volume, literally because they dry out the hair, and visually because of the different colours.

Possibly a lightweight fringe - choppy not blunt and not too much hair cut into it. Eyebrow length not short. Fringes do need maintenance , although tbh mine isn’t a big deal as I just sweep it sideways when it gets longer.

I agree with this advice. You do look lovely and I am glad you are wanting to take care of the whole of you. We can be so hard on ourselves in so many ways.

Sqeebling · 05/07/2022 00:28

Your dress really suits you and looks very flattering

What you need is babyliss curl secret to make your hair look full and spray Elnett on after

It's very quick once you get the hang of it
