Do I chop it off?!

I have had long hair for years and years. I've just booked a hair appointment for the first time in about three years and I fancy something different.

I am really fat. Really really overweight. So I feel like short hair makes my face look rounder/fatter BUT with my long thin hair I also feel like I look like a bit of a slob as well. My hair is thin and the ends are terrible. I really wish I could go into a hairdressers and tell them to do what they want - something that will make me look amazing but they all stare blankly and say 'it's up to you'. So I get two inches off and go about my day. I want something different this time!

I've just been trying dresses on so my daughter took a pic of me - I don't generally have any pics of me so this is probably the best I can do.

That dress looks great on you.

niki26 · 04/07/2022 17:00

Thank you also for the comments about the dress - it was literally delivered about 10 minutes before my daughter took that pic ! I got three dresses delivered as I'm going to a wedding next week - I always feel very self conscious at events etc. I got the same dress in lilac and I actually quite like it!

I am 5'2'' and approx 17st - my bmi is just over 44 so I am very overweight and I am working on doing something about that. With the weight gain also came the reluctance to take better care of myself - beauty routines are non existent. Hence the first hair appointment for years. So I really really do appreciate you all taking the time to help me.

Have it cut so that it's just resting on your shoulders. The length you've got now isn't at all flattering.

Goldengoosey · 04/07/2022 17:13

Love the dress. If I were you I’d get about 6 inches off it and as others have said a nice long side fringe, a few layers will give it a bit more volume. At that length you will still be able to wear it up. A decent cut will make it look much healthier x

Chazzagirl2 · 04/07/2022 17:15

Maybe go mid-length to start with, somewhere between shoulder and boob? You can always chop more off later.

Agree with pp’s, you look great in that dress.

THisbackwithavengeance · 04/07/2022 17:17

Your hair is nice, gorgeous colour and versatile. A fringe would look good.

You look great in the dress, where did you get it?

minipie · 04/07/2022 17:21

I suggest

Just past shoulder length

No layers - if you have thin straight hair layers are not good.

Highlights - these add volume, literally because they dry out the hair, and visually because of the different colours.

Possibly a lightweight fringe - choppy not blunt and not too much hair cut into it. Eyebrow length not short. Fringes do need maintenance , although tbh mine isn’t a big deal as I just sweep it sideways when it gets longer.

itsthesoundofthepolice · 04/07/2022 17:25

I'd get it cut to about 2"below your collar bone, lots of laying and a long "curtain bangs" style fringe. That would give you some movement and width to your hair and give you the option to tie it up out the way if you needed.
Ps that dress looks lovely on!!

minipie · 04/07/2022 17:25

This sort of thing, but not with the dip dye effect. Highlights all over or not at all.

You may well find your hair is a bit less straight and has a bit of a wave if it’s shorter

I don't know enough about hair to be helpful but I jumped on to say, if your hairdresser looks at you blankly and is no help...ask around for recommendations and try a new one. They should want to help you look and feel amazing!
Secondly, you look lovely in the picture. Please try not to be so down on yourself. Whatever you do, do it because you deserve to feel amazing!

Aquamarine1029 · 04/07/2022 17:28

Shorten your hair to slightly below your clavicle and get long curtain fringe.

Iamoptimusprime · 04/07/2022 17:30

I think this length would look fantastic and it’s long enough to still put up if you wanted. Then you can always add a fringe if you feel like it.

Jadoube · 04/07/2022 17:46

A good chunk of length off always makes me feel more polished if I’m in a bit of a rut. Just above shoulder length cut, dry my hair upside down then smooth right way up with a hot brush gives me the perfect amount of volume to balance out my round face.

That dress looks lovely on you, the colour is gorgeous with your hair colour!

Floralnomad · 04/07/2022 17:50

Layers , layers , layers is the way to go and shoulder length or slightly shorter .

GreenClock · 04/07/2022 17:50

Shoulder length and layered is the way to go I think. Maybe subtle highlights too.

And keep the dress!

jeaux90 · 04/07/2022 17:52

I love the dress! I agree with the sloping bob.

Advice on the fringe, as much as I like a straight blunt fringe they are high maintenance. Side sloping one with the bob will be way easier (I have that cut and fringe now)

You won't have to get your fringe trimmed in between cuts then or have the annoying blowing your hair out of your eyes thing going on either Grin

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 04/07/2022 17:52

People always advise people with your type of hair to get layers. But I have similar hair and layers just make it look finer and more flyaway. A blunt cut makes it look thickest.

SophiaLarsen · 04/07/2022 17:53

You don't look really really fat and that dress is awesome.

Your hair looks really nice. How about a long fringe, one sided and shaped so it curves around your face? Then chop the hair to mid neck? Consider getting face framing highlights too. In a lighter brown.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 04/07/2022 17:53

I'd go for a blunt cut two or three inches below the shoulder.

headstone · 04/07/2022 17:55

I don’t think you look fat either , you just have big boobs. I think your hair looks nice long, I’d just give a trim.

chiffchaffchiff · 04/07/2022 17:56

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 04/07/2022 17:53

I'd go for a blunt cut two or three inches below the shoulder.

Same. I have fine, thin hair and styling it when above the shoulders was more of a pain. There was nothing to weigh it down. My hair is more forgiving just below my shoulders.

maeveiscurious · 04/07/2022 17:58

A glossy shoulder length bob would look great and just before the wedding would make you feel years younger

RaspberryChouxBuns · 04/07/2022 18:08

Don't be hard on yourself OP, you're working on yourself and a lovely new hair style is a great place to start!

You need volume and a bit of movement, if you've got virgin hair definitely get some well blended highlights in. Balayage would look cute despite some people saying it's passé -ignore those people.

RaspberryChouxBuns · 04/07/2022 18:09

You don't even need to go shoulder length tbh you could go to the nape of your neck, you've got loads of hair!

Fatandnearly50 · 04/07/2022 18:20

I would go straight bob to the top of your shoulders. Then most of the time you can just wash and leave, blow dry if it’s an occasion.

i am similar size with naturally poker straight hair too. I think the shoulder length keeps it in decent condition too.

i think the dress is lovely too.
