What was the last perfume that was so bad you had to scrub it straight off?

Maison Margiela Replica Beach Walk for me.

Was hoping for something salty and coconutty and beachy in a fresh way. Got cloying ylang-ylang with a hunt of synthetic suncream and very little else. Really dated and old lady ish, like it could be by Yardley. Awful awful awful.

Glad I only bought a sample.

During lockdown I bought a diptyque eau de toilette based purely on the website description and the fact I love every other diptyque product I’ve bought. It was Eau Lente, and the flowery blurb about Alexander the Great hooked me. Horribly cloying; I couldn’t wear it again after it made me feel a bit sick while driving.

Just looked it up on fragrantica and someone said it smelled like a "spicy sanitary wipe". Hard pass! Tbf I can't deal with cinnamon or clove in perfume in even the smallest of quantities though 😷.

I bought a Katie Price 'Stunning' box set in a charity shop ( so already an unwanted gift 😂) The shower gel and body cream weren't too bad if I'm honest, but the perfume smelled like a kitty litter box! Truly Vile and I donated it right back to the shop 😎

RudsyFarmer · 03/07/2022 10:27

I can answer this!! Aqua do Parma Oud & Spice. If I wanted to smell like an incense stick I’d have gone and purchased some incense sticks!!! It’s completely vile.

LovelaceBiggWither · 03/07/2022 10:27

Ormonde Jayne Tanger. The silage on this is a monster. One spray and the house reeked of it for hours.

PAFMO · 03/07/2022 10:28

Jo Malone oud and something.
Was sent a sample.
Jesus H.
Anything with oud in it smells like ripe nappy to me.

SirChenjins · 03/07/2022 10:28

Jo Malone fig and cassis - smelled lovely in the bottle but something went wrong went I put it on, it smelt really musty.

AreolaGrande · 03/07/2022 10:29

I thought the perfume was called Truly Vile at first glance there Just 🤣

Ostara by Penhaligons. I tried it in the shop and thought I liked it. When I sprayed it on at home, I had to go shower five minutes later. Made me feel ill.

MattoMatto · 03/07/2022 10:32

I don’t like cinnamon either - I put my purchase down to lockdown madness! I hadn’t thought about spicy sanitary wipes, but now you mention it... I gave it to my mum, who said it was lovely, although I notice the box has gathered a little more dust each time I visit.

Angel by Thierry Mugler. It made me nauseous. Most sickly sweet perfumes make me feel like this. La Vie Est Belle is another

Frezia · 03/07/2022 10:39

White Musk by The Body Shop. I've been looking for a fresh white musk and cotton scent like my body wash (but the brand doesn't make perfumes sadly). This was nothing like it and reminded me of the most overpowering kind of cheap old fashioned perfume.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 03/07/2022 10:40

Clinique wrappings (reformulated)

Sample of an Oud-y type perfume sent free by Miller Harris (which was surprising as most of their stuff is genuinely good)

AreolaGrande · 03/07/2022 10:44

I've disliked every single Penhaligons fragrance I've ever tried on me. They're too grown up I think. SIL wears Halfeti and it's amazing on her though.

Oud is not for me. Reminds of of the incense in catholic mass as a child. Not a positive association.

Alien by Thierry Muglar. So overwhelmingly strong and feels like you've sprayed it inside your nose. Doesn't wear off and when others ate wearing it you can smell them a mile off! I bought angel years back and it was the same. awful

CinnamonJellyBeans · 03/07/2022 10:44

Also Oud Paleo by Diptyque. Smells like 80's aftershave

AreolaGrande · 03/07/2022 10:46

I despise Angel but think Alien is a masterpiece 👽💜

I got the summer box from Perfume Society last year as part of their seasonal subscription and every one smelled like piss, except the replica one (eyewatering lime, just lime) and the one vaguely ok one which was Mugler Angel: Summer or something, pink and blue sample. I think it's a citrus note that gets me every time, morphs into pure piss. I replied when they asked for feedback and they now won't send discount codes to my email address 😆 I got a box from them before and it was ace (except for the Bentley frags, they're disgusting, Bentley should not be making perfumes) so it must just have been that box's theme.

Ikeabag · 03/07/2022 10:49

Agree with Penhaligons! One smells like Joop. BORK. The only exception is the juniper one, which lasts about 10 minutes unfortunately.

ChessieFL · 03/07/2022 10:49

I can on to say Thierry Mugler’s Angel too. Loads of people love it but it makes me feel sick.

Ikeabag · 03/07/2022 10:52

For context I'm currently wearing Impulse Wild Waves because it smells like that greeny blue natural collection one from the 90s. Does anyone else miss Gucci Envy? I'm such a product of my youth. Another: I like Mademoiselle on certain people but it's meh on me. I worked in a bank years back and a young woman swept in wearing it once and I almost died it smelled so good on her. On me, the muskiness goes a bit weird and reminds me of someone who hugged me as a child that smelled unpleasant.

Cakemamma19 · 03/07/2022 10:52

Another on that in my opinion is absolutely vile is YSL dark opium. Absolutely stomach turning

chiffchaffchiff · 03/07/2022 10:54

Good Girl Gone Bad by Kilian. It was awful. Opened like an old fashioned musty floral perfume then within minutes started to go rancid. Had a bit of a urine undertone on me. I wondered if it was the tuberose.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/07/2022 10:56

I'm going retro here. Back in the 80's when Opium first came out. I tried it because all my friends had it (disclaimer- I was about 15). It smelled lovely on other people but awful on me.
One day I went into Debenhams in Bristol and an assistant was spraying it on customers wrists. It was so overpowering that it could be smelled on the 4th floor, when the perfume counter was on the ground floor.

AreolaGrande · 03/07/2022 10:58

Tuberose is rank chiff. I once bought a sample of Madonna Truth or Dare due to the positive reviews on fragrantica and it was absolutely 🤢.
