What was the last perfume that was so bad you had to scrub it straight off?

Maison Margiela Replica Beach Walk for me.

Was hoping for something salty and coconutty and beachy in a fresh way. Got cloying ylang-ylang with a hunt of synthetic suncream and very little else. Really dated and old lady ish, like it could be by Yardley. Awful awful awful.

Glad I only bought a sample.

For context I'm currently wearing Impulse Wild Waves because it smells like that greeny blue natural collection one from the 90s. Does anyone else miss Gucci Envy? I'm such a product of my youth. Another: I like Mademoiselle on certain people but it's meh on me. I worked in a bank years back and a young woman swept in wearing it once and I almost died it smelled so good on her. On me, the muskiness goes a bit weird and reminds me of someone who hugged me as a child that smelled unpleasant.

I miss Gucci envy so much. Wish there was a dupe.

I’m a big perfume geek, and used to have an enormous collection. I’ve had to sell off or gift more than half of it over the past couple of years, as I suddenly went off SO many perfumes. Ones I’d previously loved started to make me feel sick. I don’t know if it’s perimenopause that’s caused this? It feels very much like the aversion to smells I had when pregnant, except it’s gone on for two years and I’m too old to be pregnant! Grin.

The last perfume I sampled and hated was Drop d’Issey. It sounded so lovely - lilac and a soft almondy note - but it smelled like the water in a vase of flowers that had gone rank and slimey. I walked around a shopping centre with that sickening smell for two hours before having to go home and shower. Awful.

I've disliked every single Penhaligons fragrance I've ever tried on me. They're too grown up I think. SIL wears Halfeti and it's amazing on her though.

Oud is not for me. Reminds of of the incense in catholic mass as a child. Not a positive association.

@AreolaGrande juniper sling is the only penhaligons that doesn’t make me heave - can’t stand overpowering fragrance. Possibly Quercus. Come to think of it I think I prefer those aimed at men, or at the very least unisex!

Halfeti is rank. Opium, Poison, Angel also liable to make me gag.

TheLostNights · 03/07/2022 18:33

Every perfume mentioned on here I hate. Prefer a more subtle, lighter scent

lashy · 03/07/2022 18:33

Ghost

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 03/07/2022 18:39

poison, opium, youth dew, angel, alien, all grim

I will add Bronze Goddess and Pomegranate Noir, both of which make me feel sick!

AmericanWerewolf · 03/07/2022 18:50

Clinique - Aromatics (foul on me)

Estee Lauder - Sensuous (major headache/ vomit vibes )

Mugler - Alien (noooo!)

Elizabeth Arden - (anything by this brand🤢)

Lancome - La vie en rose (might be a best seller, but it’s vile on me)

Estee Lauder - Youth Dew (granny smells)

Yves St Laurent - Rive Gauche (so 80s)

PipeScatter · 03/07/2022 18:51

Chanel No 5 for me. Makes me smell like a talc'd up grandma!

Unfortunately my MIL decided I liked it so for years bought me all sorts of connotations of it!

AmericanWerewolf · 03/07/2022 18:52

@Sundays365

it was the menopause that made me worse!!! Couldn’t bear heavy perfumes, was giving them away left right & centre!
Could only manage very light scents like some of the Calvin Klein ones.

JaceLancs · 03/07/2022 19:21

Estee by Estée Lauder I bought it by mistake thinking it was the same as very estee which I loved
going cheap if anyone is interested before I stick on eBay

Hurstlandshome · 03/07/2022 19:33

Flower bomb. The most horrendous scent, makes me feel travel sick whenever I smell it.

Sunflowers32 · 03/07/2022 19:40

How much @JaceLancs ? X

tobee · 03/07/2022 20:26

As pp have said JM Pomegranate Noir! Can't abide it! Although I know people love it on here.

Although I like Santal 33 a lot.

Always interesting how people have such different reactions to scents; and how some work on some of us and not others!

FancyFelix · 03/07/2022 21:01

Yes it's odd isn't it. I love pomegranate noir on others but every time I try it on myself it's revolting

Yorkshirelass04 · 03/07/2022 21:09

Molecule 03

It smells like sweaty armpit. Which I think is the point of the Molecule range, to smell of pheromones. However this has a nasty sniff to it.

OceanbreezeSun · 03/07/2022 21:23

Chanel no.5 - It’s just not a nice scent to me, smells abit ‘off’ & lingers for all the wrong reasons.

Poison and Opium - Both too strong and overwhelming. I feel like I can taste them.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 03/07/2022 21:51

I asked DP to buy me Good Girl by Carolina Herrera for Christmas. He bought me Very Good Girl. I can’t describe how much I had to get that stuff off my skin. I have never had such a violent reaction to a perfume and I used to wear Poison!

It made me think of old people as there is an underlying vanilla scent which doesn’t go with the rest of the scent. Utterly disgusting.

I don’t know why DP bought me this when I had written down the exact item I wanted (he had asked) and as it was a large bottom it was a very expensive mistake.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 03/07/2022 21:52

Large bottle, not bottom obvs!

soulinablackberrypie · 03/07/2022 22:07

Benefit So Hooked On Carmella. Not a nasty smell as such but just too strong.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 03/07/2022 22:50

Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir makes me physically sick. Just smelling it makes me feel like I've got the worst ever hangover, my reaction to it is visceral.

Alexander McQueen Kingdom. I absolutely adored it on other people and on sample cards but it smelled like curry on me. I was absolutely gutted.

Dogmum40 · 03/07/2022 22:59

Chanel No 5 and Chanel Noir both are far too strong and give me headaches!

I love some of the more delicate Chanel offerings but those two are rank 🤢

earsup · 03/07/2022 23:02

Clinique happy....smelt of watery stale water....and Baccarat rouge...yuk....no idea why people fuss over that one....smelt of nothing at all...faded within minutes yet costs hundreds.

justasking111 · 03/07/2022 23:16

Menopause interesting maybe that's why I've gone off my old favourites. There's three perfumes in my cabinet never opened because my sense of smell suddenly changed

Youth dew, Chanel, samsara all vile on me.
