What was the last perfume that was so bad you had to scrub it straight off?

Maison Margiela Replica Beach Walk for me.

Was hoping for something salty and coconutty and beachy in a fresh way. Got cloying ylang-ylang with a hunt of synthetic suncream and very little else. Really dated and old lady ish, like it could be by Yardley. Awful awful awful.

Glad I only bought a sample.

I don't use perfume much but years ago, found that Dior Poison was a very effective fly spray. 😁

SocksAndTheCity · 03/07/2022 11:00

Santal 33, which I had bought on the basis that a friend of wore it and smelled amazing.

On me it smelled like a rotting head of celery and made me feel so ill I had to go home and scrub it off which took forever - the Tshirt I had on needed two washes - and I sold it on eBay.

I quite like Angel (in very small amounts)😀

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 03/07/2022 11:01

Miss Dior, even after I washed it off I could still smell it. Horrible!

AreolaGrande · 03/07/2022 11:01

Santal 33 is alright up pickle juice on me. Not good.

Ostara by Penhaligons. I tried it in the shop and thought I liked it. When I sprayed it on at home, I had to go shower five minutes later. Made me feel ill.

THIS^. It's truly awful stuff.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/07/2022 11:04

Tom Ford Black Orchid. I don't care what anyone else says, it is sickening.

MintyGreenDreams · 03/07/2022 11:04

Chanel no 19 🤢

Cantonet · 03/07/2022 11:09

Romilly Wilde Idle.
I normally love it, but my nose is broken due to Covid. So all I can smell at the moment is a synthetic woody sludgy green mess. Rather than the Jasmine tinged dewy scent I usually smell.

BaronessBomburst · 03/07/2022 11:13

Another vote for La Vie est Belle.
Sickly and almost impossible to wash off.

KillerBoots · 03/07/2022 11:13

Lancome La nuit Tresor. I know loads of people love it but it smells straight up palma violets on me and the rose in the background is too much for me!! Way too sweet.

Friendofdennis · 03/07/2022 11:17

i have wasted a lot of money buying perfumes online based on their descriptions. Have also bought ‘discovery sets’ and been very disappointed. Paul smith ‘portrait’ promised much but is very strange. I have tried Floral Street perfumes and only like Electric Rhubarb, the others smell musty to me. I don’t like anything that smells ‘pongy ’ such as monotheme Monoi which is really overpowering

Angel by Thierry Mugler. It made me nauseous. Most sickly sweet perfumes make me feel like this. La Vie Est Belle is another

Came here to say Angel as well!

SmileyPiuPiu · 03/07/2022 11:20

It was a diptique sample that came with purchase. Horrendous.

CinderellyCinderelly · 03/07/2022 11:27

Charlotte tilbury - scent of a dream.

So heavy and honestly something my gran would wear! It reminded me of Elizabeth Arden - Blue Grass

Oh yes forgot that one! Truly horrendous.

For context I'm currently wearing Impulse Wild Waves because it smells like that greeny blue natural collection one from the 90s. Does anyone else miss Gucci Envy? I'm such a product of my youth. Another: I like Mademoiselle on certain people but it's meh on me. I worked in a bank years back and a young woman swept in wearing it once and I almost died it smelled so good on her. On me, the muskiness goes a bit weird and reminds me of someone who hugged me as a child that smelled unpleasant.

You can buy Gucci Envy from Perfume Parlour.

Angel 🤢
Portrait of a Lady 🤢

SJP Lovely. Gets raved about on here when someone wants recommendations for a cheap perfume that doesn't smell awful but to me it smells like cat's piss!
Also Samsara. Thought they'd stopped making it because I haven't smelt it on anyone in a long time but came across a bottle in a dept store last week and it still smells like vomit!

I'm going retro here. Back in the 80's when Opium first came out. I tried it because all my friends had it (disclaimer- I was about 15). It smelled lovely on other people but awful on me.
One day I went into Debenhams in Bristol and an assistant was spraying it on customers wrists. It was so overpowering that it could be smelled on the 4th floor, when the perfume counter was on the ground floor.

I loved the original opium - but I used it sparingly!! But I hated Poison. A relative used to wear it and the smell arrived several minutes before she did and stayed long after she left.

I bought a bottle of Jo Malone Blush peony and blush suede after loving it in store. By the time I'd got back to the car, I was almost being sick and had to take headache tablets. It was an hours drive home and I had to keep the windows open on the bloody motorway as the smell was making me feel so ill.

Thank god I hadn't taken the wrapper off and had just sprayed the sample so I was able to return it. Never had a reaction to perfume like it in my life.

I quite like Beach Walk, but didn't love it. I gave it to my daughter who liked it more.

I don't want you to name mine as it was from an independent perfume house, but it had a whiff of surgical spirit.

Saucery · 03/07/2022 11:54

Jo Malone London Red Roses. An acquaintance wears it and it smells divine on her, so light and subtle. On me, it makes my eyes water and gives me a raging headache and nausea. The only note I can pick out is cat piss. I only use the tiniest bit, too. Same effect.

I used to love Paloma Picasso and still use Alien in the winter months, so it’s not just a Heavy Perfume thing.

ArabeI · 03/07/2022 11:55

Angel was definitely one I couldn't wear. It makes me nauseous. It put me off trying other gourmands for a long time.

RedWreck · 03/07/2022 11:56

Costa Azzura by Tom Ford, its meant to be unisex but I found it really cloying & like cheap aftershave. I couldn't get away from it & it really lingered when usually I can't smell perfume on myself.
