Just caught the "What Looks Frumpy Dated" thread and it is so broad, perhaps someone can tell me, coming up 42, what in hell I should be wearing!

Whatever you feel comfortable in!

midsomermurderess · 30/06/2022 22:50

But it's not talking about 'frumpy'. It about looks/trends that have run their course. Why are people so angry and defensive about women chatting about fashion? Look, wear what you like and what works for you. But fashion comes in cycles, things the were 'in' end up being 'out'. So many offence vampire on here.

I'm neither angry nor defensive. Nor offended. And just call me Lucy Westenra. Actually, don't.

It is just a lighthearted post.

I think it's an excellent question, OP - I wish someone would answer without just saying "wear what makes you feel good", because that is pyjamas.

That's funny, because I've been at an educational conference over the last two days and one of the sessions was asking what are your "Covid Teaching Keeps" (for teaching purposes, ie what coronavirus-related adaptations are good to hang on to)

Mentimeter went mad with pyjamas. (I added rabbit slippers)

Maybe we should go all cultural revolution? If we lose the Lenin collar it walks that line between pajama and day wear.

ShandaLear · 30/06/2022 23:11

Do you know what I would love to see as acceptable for everyone? Knee socks. I know you are all recoiling in horror, but they’re so comfy, can be worn with longer skirts so you don’t have to wear tights (and I hate tights), and look great with cigarette pants or cropped jeans and loafers. I’m not suggesting a full lederhosen style sock, just one that hugs your calves and provides a nice light compression.

ShandaLear · 30/06/2022 23:12

See also ponchos.

And cardigans are the superfood of clothes. Don’t listen to that lot on the other thread.

Avarua1 · 30/06/2022 23:34

Answer: Colourful dress, merino cami underneath for warmth, trainers or Docs or Birkenstocks, good hair and teeth.

darisdet · 30/06/2022 23:37

What's the thing about calling you Lucy Westenra (Bram Stoker Lucy)?

Misses point of thread!

I wear them at home to exercise in, or with skirts, but you are right, they are comfy. Just under the knee, bough I have one over knee pair - I think they're from avoca

shivermetimbers77 · 30/06/2022 23:39

I had to come off the other thread
as people were just listing all the things I wear and it was getting a bit embarrassing 😁

darisdet · 30/06/2022 23:41

I haven't looked at the other thread, because everything I like will be on there, and the same for most people visiting the thread. It's always the same, and we never agree.

Stevie6 · 30/06/2022 23:44

I agree, people happy to list what's "out" but then we don't know what we should be wearing. I'm also 42, I don't want to take inspiration from what teenage girls are wearing and deciding is acceptable!

Somebody mentioned there are "offence vampires" here. Silly comment, silly response!

Glad it's not just me reading that one and thinking 'shit that's most of my wardrobe out then!'

Wombat100 · 30/06/2022 23:48

I’m 39 and don’t think (??) I’m frumpy. Mainly wear:

Mom jeans (have replaced skinnies).
Nike air max or converse.
Dresses with dr martens.

Definitely not crocs though, can’t get on board with those monstrosities.

Stevie6 · 30/06/2022 23:50

I wear dresses with leggings and normally DMs. I never go out bare legged as I have awful varicose veins in my legs that really stick out so it either that or jeans, and yes they're skinny ones

Ah ok, thanks 🤣

ZenNudist · 30/06/2022 23:52

I'm same age. My understanding is trousers have to be wider not skinny, this means no baggy or loose top half clothes, but can go for short and boxy. Footwear is clumpy.

Thing is if you're short and apple shaped like me big baggy clothes are going to make you look awful. It's all very well being a teen in big baggy jeans and a barely there crop top.

I like hush clothes for looking fairly current and I supplement with tesco for some low cost dupes.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 30/06/2022 23:55

I can’t really give fashion advice (since I look like an over stuffed bin bag during a 4 week bin men strike during the Winter of Discontent in the 70s, with half of my stuffing scattered along the pavement by a fox) but my wonderfully styled & groomed Grandma always said;
”Whatever you wear, make sure it is the right size & your outfit is topped with a smile.”
And, “For heavens sake run a bloody hairbrush through your hair before you go out!”
She was not a fan of the back combed giant hair of the 80s.

NaturalScone · 01/07/2022 13:36

I would suggest thinking for oneself and having a tad more confidence.

I do all of that. My question was rhetorical as there's a huge thread about what not to wear if we don't want to be an old fashioned girl and get dated.

In theory I like that, but if you have ample bosoms, you look like a lagging jacket on a hot water tank.

jay55 · 01/07/2022 14:54

The problem is, current fashion of massive dresses makes all but the very young look frumpy.
And the mom jeans look like mom jeans not a fashion choice.
And clumpy footwear looks sensible.

So we're fucked, and might as well wear what suits and aim for chic rather than fashionable.
