Just caught the "What Looks Frumpy Dated" thread and it is so broad, perhaps someone can tell me, coming up 42, what in hell I should be wearing!

I dunno OP but having rewatched The White Queen, I think it should be dresses like this … (am seriously considering getting dresses like this made)

This wins.

woodhill · 01/07/2022 18:30

Yes they are nice

KittyCatsby · 01/07/2022 18:36

I will continue to wear what I want , where I want , and however I want .

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 01/07/2022 18:38

Firstly, what ever the fuck you want, but within that, if you want to wear what is considered in, that is worth discussing.
In winter I aspire to look like a extra witch from Harry Potter(home) / or an extra from early mad men (work) or in summer like I live in early 60s Provence so if anything would apply that is “on trend” at a given moment, I might buy that.

Well, what SHOULD we be wearing?!

And definitely only flats. Heels are the patriarchy in shoe form.

excellent 🤷‍♀️

Love your mood boards.😁

I wear dresses with leggings and normally DMs. I never go out bare legged as I have awful varicose veins in my legs that really stick out so it either that or jeans, and yes they're skinny ones

Me too!!

Eeksteek · 01/07/2022 20:20

woodhill · 01/07/2022 18:21

I'm sure the long dresses were nicer in the 90s and more bias cut, 1930s look

Tbh I was mainly pregnant on and off so it was what I had maternity wise etc

It’s the frills and high necks I think. Frills!! I had skirts. With buttons all down the front and big, clumpy boots. I expect it looked fairly silly, but not so silly as that!

I can’t define the frumpy. It’s more that just dated. It looks like something that could never have even been fashionable in your own lifetime. Only it is. Now! Mind boggling. Aw well, I’m glad I’m grown up and being socially accepted is not going be dependent on what I wear again. Within reason, anyway.

I don't know. I'm 37 and wearing a Stranger Things t shirt.

This is my kinda style. 😁

merryhouse · 01/07/2022 15:44

@Woowaa - possibly less that they're trying to make people think they're young and cool and more that they see these clothes and think "yes I like that"

I was 11 in 1980, and I still have a visceral reaction to hems wider than knees (jeans should be narrow enough to fit inside pixie boots) and secretly hanker after Dynasty hair.

Oh, I loved my pixie boots! Burgundy suede with jeans tucked in.
That trend can come back right now.

iCouldSleepForAYear · 01/07/2022 20:40

Honestly, half the other thread's version of "dated" was what my 20 year old niece and bestie embrace.

What I have seen lately and like:

  1. No more heels at conferences or the office. Everyone seems to be prioritising comfortable feet post covid. Huzzah! 🙌 A lot more boots with dresses, or brogues with trousers and an ironed top.
  1. Trainers with mini dresses. This is a look I could never pull off, but the aforementioned niece and friends sport this look a lot at each other's house parties. I envy their wisdom. Vans > stilettos, always.
  1. Jumpsuits that look a bit like dungarees, in soft fabrics. The cool-looking mum at the nursery run wears these and I love them. I have a linen one that was amazingly comfortable for travelling in, and is nice in warm weather.
  1. Big chunky knit polo neck jumper with a bohemian style maxi skirt and lace up ankle boots. Or a polo neck layer under a summer dress. Adding an extra bit here or there to make some seasonal items wearable more often year-round.
  1. A slow return to black trainers+white soles rather than all white. Easier to maintain, still goes with almost everything.
  1. A move away from super-skinnies. I still see skinny jeans around, but they're more high-waisted to the belly button and less painted on. Also slim flares and straight leg. Wide leg jeans, my teenager loves, but she is 16 and a slim pear shape. I look like a balloon in them.
Riverlee · 01/07/2022 20:43

I wore The Sainsbury dress the other day and love it. Probably highly frowned upon on the other thread.

Well, what SHOULD we be wearing?!

No no, this is banging. I felt it up in the shop. Lovely quality!

Womenandwomenfirst · 01/07/2022 21:09

The other thread was sneering at white trainers - what can be worn in summer given that there is about one day you can wear sandals?

Lookingoutside · 01/07/2022 21:27

‘I would suggest thinking for oneself and having a tad more confidence.’

That’s not nice. It’s easy to lose your way a bit. Also wouldn’t it be great if ‘oneself’ could just decide to have more confidence?!

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 21:35

Trainers are still very much in fashion but I've been wearing sandals for a few weeks now. I don't think it needs to be tropical to get a toe out.

PlantSpider · 01/07/2022 21:47

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 18:21

I don’t think the people asking here are looking for cutting edge,

So you agree with me then?

I’d that makes you feel better, you can think that.

MrsElm · 01/07/2022 21:55

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 01/07/2022 13:38

I do all of that. My question was rhetorical as there's a huge thread about what not to wear if we don't want to be an old fashioned girl and get dated.

The trick is to ignore that thread!

Simples 😀

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 21:57

I don't feel bad though!

I said "no one who wants very on trend fashion advice would look for it on MNs S&B!!"

You then posted
I especially love the people that like to proclaim how the last place you’d look for trend advice is MN S&B anyway. It’s so patronizing and superior. I don’t think the people asking here are looking for cutting edge, just asking, presumably, other mums.

What is the difference between cutting edge & very on trend? 🤔

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 21:58

And my point is proven by the fact lots of things classed as outdated on that thread is very much on trend. I'm not sure why that makes me patronising?

maskersanonymous · 01/07/2022 22:00

I went out in a black t shirt with white collar and a grey angora cardigan over the top yesterday. I have grey hair. I basically resembled Father Ted (according to DH and DS), so don't wear that!

Gingerwarthog · 01/07/2022 22:02

Well it's Summer in Devon so we should be wearing:
Sliders
Shorts
T-shirts
Hoodies
All of the above being the older the better (worn in and comfortable)
Flippers

Gingerwarthog · 01/07/2022 22:03

Anything from Sainsburys also pretty good especially the cream dress with embroidery they had in store a few weeks ago or the stripy sun dress. Perfect.

I’m 39 and don’t think (??) I’m frumpy. Mainly wear:

Mom jeans (have replaced skinnies).
Nike air max or converse.
Dresses with dr martens.

Definitely not crocs though, can’t get on board with those monstrosities.

I love crocs! Once you get a pair you can't go back. The comfort is unreal
