Well, what SHOULD we be wearing?!

Just caught the "What Looks Frumpy Dated" thread and it is so broad, perhaps someone can tell me, coming up 42, what in hell I should be wearing!

I love seeing what younger women are wearing. So many young women seem to comfortable dressing for themselves and have moved away from the horrible artificial look I see in the trashy papers.

I don't wear anything that anyone under 30 would wear. I hit 50 and decided to wear what made me happy. So, loads of dresses and colour and fun.

Well it's Summer in Devon so we should be wearing:
Sliders
Shorts
T-shirts
Hoodies
All of the above being the older the better (worn in and comfortable)
Flippers

Also living in Devon with this poor excuse of a summer Hoodies and T-shirts are the only things on your list I'm wearing

MigsandTiggs · 01/07/2022 23:09

I'm even out of trend on this thread! 😂
I love my very comfy crocs sandals and I'm short so if it's formal, I'm not giving up my expensive stilletto heels for anyone. I wear wedges with midi dresses, culottes and linen trousers. I'm not a jeans person and think leggings are for the gym but I do like my joggers and hoodies for just mooching around the house/supermarket.
Dare I dig out my decades old Prada platform sandals? ... saw J-Lo in similar recently.
I wear lots of white and bright colours like yellow, orange, green and blue, but within a limited tonal range that is flattering to my olive complexion.
Am I the only person who never wears tights, even in a Scottish winter?

Oh, I loved my pixie boots! Burgundy suede with jeans tucked in.
That trend can come back right now.

..can we add a mohair jumper..? I'm in if so😀

‘I would suggest thinking for oneself and having a tad more confidence.’

That’s not nice. It’s easy to lose your way a bit. Also wouldn’t it be great if ‘oneself’ could just decide to have more confidence?!

I was the OP and I have plenty of confidence and can think for myself! It was a humourous question given the other thread would have you wearing zero because it's out of date.

I wore The Sainsbury dress the other day and love it. Probably highly frowned upon on the other thread.

I saw that Sainsbury's dress. Lovely cheerful pattern!

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 21:58

And my point is proven by the fact lots of things classed as outdated on that thread is very much on trend. I'm not sure why that makes me patronising?

Let’s just go with you being right and me being wrong, if that helps.

milkyaqua · 02/07/2022 01:23

From the S & B board, and the links and pictures posted, it appears we should be wearing horrific floor-length lampshades or toilet-roll covers.

Aria999 · 02/07/2022 01:29

I'm 44 and I still shamelessly wear many things from the other thread.

At the moment I am cycling through jeans, leggings, loose soft Athleta trousers, and patterned cotton harem pants depending how hot it is.

🤷‍♀️

Aria999 · 02/07/2022 01:36

I also think it really depends where you are located. A few years ago I was copying some seriously stylish people around me in Los Angeles and when I mentioned the style on here I got a 'wtf?!' response

Now I need to know what you were wearing! I love how style varies in that way, so interesting!

I bought the top in the same pattern. I thought it rather retro. In the sale now which is annoying.

Today I'm wearing skinny jeans, Converse and a band t-shirt.

Can you handle it though? You clearly have huge issues with being in the wrong, is there a back story? 😆

I tried a lampshade dress on once and the old song 'stately as a galleon she sailed across the floor' immediately came to mind 😏

velvetvixen · 02/07/2022 08:27

I've only ever had one band t shirt. Joy Division back in the 80s.

RampantIvy · 02/07/2022 08:47

At the risk of sounding like a broken record skinny jeans aren’t out. People keep saying it on mumsnet, but I see loads of people still wearing them, and the shops are full of them.

And where are all the flat chested women on MN? I only ever read about very well endowed women on these threads.

It’s currently 12 degrees and raining here. I will be wearing a cardigan or jumper today. How come these fashionistas never feel the cold? Or do they all live somewhere where it is never cold? My friend once joked about Gok Wan’s How to Look Good Naked. She said he needs to do How to Look Good Naked in Yorkshire because he always put his models in thin clothes or short sleeves.

I don’t understand the snobbery about trainers – Vejas are in/no they’re not. You must wear Asics/I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole etc etc. I bought myself some really comfy Remonte trainers yesterday which no doubt the fashion police will sneer at, but I can walk in them and they don’t hurt my feet, and I think they look great with my cargoes and jeans.

Trainers are still very much in fashion but I've been wearing sandals for a few weeks now. I don't think it needs to be tropical to get a toe out.

It does for me. When my feet are cold I am miserable. 12 degrees is far too cold for wearing sandals.

Tigofigo · 02/07/2022 08:57

My style often gets commented on and my "uniform" is generally, straight-slightly wide leg slightly cropped jeans or twill trousers with either an oversized slightly cropped tee or an oversized shirt either tucked in or not, NB trainers and an oversized jacket or coat, with the occasional 80s item thrown in. Colour wise I'm quite brave but know what suits me and go for unusual combinations. It's generally quite minimalist and androgynous. Not for everyone though!

hatchyu · 02/07/2022 09:16

But everyone is different & it's not 12 degrees everywhere.

ArabeI · 02/07/2022 09:23

I like the trainers as leisure wear look, and with dresses, but not for me as I don't think they'd suit me. Something like the mentioned remonte might work for casual, actually. Though I do have canvas pump-type shoes.

I have different trainers for different purposes and it's become ingrained (self imposed rules!) so I have Veja and Victoria trainers to wear with gym/exercise clothes, to be changed out of, Under Armour trainers for longer period wearing, then Brooks for running (ugly but amazingly comfortable and fit for purpose).

Trainer waffle!

If you want to look younger then maybe follow my 18yo daughter’s trend - whatever T-shirt she happens to find that isn’t hers, the more oversized the better. Jogging bottoms. Thick Christmas socks pulled over her joggers and green crocs to finish the look. She looks delightful 😆and is perfectly happy.

Your daughter sounds gorgeous .. a free spirit.
i met a gorgeous young woman this week and commented on her cool t-shirt ... she told me the current trend is to go through their Dads old t shirts and wear them.

sacklunch · 02/07/2022 10:53

Whatever your personal style dictates. Why follow trends? You can buy any type of thing you want from anywhere in the world. Trends are just what most people are enjoying which is fine but if you have a personal style just wear that. I have things I've had for two decades I still wear. I know what I like and that's what I wear. No one tells me how to dress because I'm 40 years of age.

Womenandwomenfirst · 02/07/2022 10:59

I remember rifling through my dad’s wardrobe back in the day and strutting out triumphantly in a string vest (with something underneath I hasten to add).

Quirky is ok for teens, but I think my dcs would die if I tried to dress like they do. Seriously embarrassing.

I think at a certain age (ie mine!) it is important to know one’s shape. Of course follow fashion if you like, but give a swerve to trends that do you no favours. Wider-leg jeans may be in, but frankly those with trainers make me look like a roadie from 1974 Sad

See, I actually have all of these thingsGrin (apart from a bonnet, and I don't know what the lace thing is and my velvet cape is actually a long coat with sleeves but fastens at the top like a cape). I love elbow length gloves especially with bracelet length or 3/4 length sleeves coats/jackets. My dresses are mostly A line as some empire lines make me look pregnant with triplets but I do have satin sashes I wear as belts (also with dungarees). Admittedly I wouldn't wear a corset on it's own as a top these days and I wear petticoats under skirts, but I do genuinely think you are right about fashion being cyclical - a lot of my A line dresses are from the 90s when the 90s were copying the 60s. My DCs are actually wearing a lot of my 90s stuff these days.

I absolutely love reading about and looking at fashion as I find it really interesting. I'm as feminist as fuck Wink but it's an interesting subject on its own. I don't "follow" fashion as such as lots of it doesn't suit me, especially at the moment with the flouncy frilly huge dresses. (If I'm going to wear a frill I like it at neckline of blouses or at the wrists) but I like seeing trends and things gradually coming in and out and back again etc. I love buying clothes for my DC, and I love shopping with them.

I think if people dress to their shape and style, you will always look stylish if not fashionable - but accessories etc can be updated to be more "in trend" and keeping up with fashion. My DCs are currently obsessed with my baguette bags from the 90s as apparently they're "in" (plus they are great to wear in a club as they aren't bulky tucked under arms and they can't get nicked so easily).

I love looking at jumpsuits and flouncy dresses even if I wouldn't wear them myself and Style and Beauty is under my Favourite Topics, under Feminism sex and gender. I love it when women dress for style rather than fashion, but I think someone more articulate will explain what I'm trying to say, a lot better than I can!

You've explained it very well.

Fishu is usually "fischu" - a small triangular shawl or scarf worn round the shoulders - "an indoor scarf" even. So yet another item which can't be worn according to the other thread.
