Well, what SHOULD we be wearing?!

Just caught the "What Looks Frumpy Dated" thread and it is so broad, perhaps someone can tell me, coming up 42, what in hell I should be wearing!

Vinted is fantastic, my daughter got her prom dress on there for £10 plus £1 package and posting, and it was beautiful!

I do pay out for leather shoes, though, I'm not keen on plastic cheap shoes and my feet blister easily, so that's where the money gets spent, and on ok bags (but not £1000's).

I think it is about feeling confident and then forgetting about your clothing. I also don't care what anyone else wears, I have friends into fashion, friends who are oblivious or don't care about fashion, so I agree with whoever said frumpiness is really a put-down of women. Most of the middle-aged men at my work have no interest in clothes and don't look fashionable but no-one says they are frumpy.

This hits the nail on the head for me. It took me years to work it out. I always thought something would change or come along that would make me feel like I had finally got it together. I overthought it, spent too much money on ideas, instead of intuitively figuring out who "I" was, style wise. And after all that, my style is really quite boring, but I am happy with it now!

I had so many odd, self imposed rules. It only changed when I felt life was far too short for making such fuss. I dared to wear what I felt best in, and slowly began to trust it.
But largely I just forget what I am wearing now as everything just ..works. There are down days like everyone has, but for the most part I think stopping criticising myself was most of the battle won.

@FarFarFarAndAway Was there anything your teens liked for you, that you didn't or that they didn't like, but you still did ?

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/07/2022 20:59

@LouraLoura Maud is a fabulous name!

They like me in really casual stuff, like sweatshirt and looser jeans, but I wouldn't feel like me if I wore that out say to work or even for dinner, supermarket fine. For the most part though their advice was amazing, because they aren't trying to dress me as them, they realise I'm middle-aged and want to look nice but need pointers, I couldn't dress the same as them if I tried!

Their advice on make-up I haven't entirely followed as I'm too lazy to use beauty blenders and faff about with eyebrows, so I still use the old methods, just with slightly more up to date products. I use contour for example now, very discretely which I wouldn't in the past, and moisturiser and primer if I can be bothered.

I’m 40 and not fashionable at all 😬, I have no idea what is fashionable. At the moment I feel my body is frumpy and not my clothes, I obviously no longer look like a 20 year old so can’t pull off the cropped top and short shorts thing.

I wear jeans, mainly skinny as my legs are probably the only part of my body I like, I’m short so wide leg and mom fit look awful on me. I wear basic t-shirts, some with print in them. I often spend the week wearing work trousers, walking trousers and walking boots. I rarely go out so never dress up. I don’t wear leggings anymore and rarely wear dresses because I can’t find any that suit me.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 21:18

Was interested because of the age difference .In the 'dated trends' thread it was reasonably divided over the influence a teenager say, could have. As so many of them are harking back to the 90s in what they wear, suppose it's about the looser shapes and different silhouettes. Not necessarily Mum wear these Crocs. Anyway they sound lovely. @FarFarFarAndAway

I can't think why any adult woman would give 2 figs about what a teenager would think in relation to what an adult woman wears.

Aria999 · 03/07/2022 01:52

As I teen I was baffled by fashion and couldn't figure it out at all.

Nowadays I just wear what suits me but in a vague context of Looks That Seem To Be Around At The Moment. Very vague. My burgundy cold shoulder evening top that looks like something out of Mass Effect is still one of my favorite garments.

Then don't 😁

Probably not very helpful but I wear things that suit my body shape - regardless of what is in fashion
i prefer natural fibres so cotton and linen mainly dresses at the moment
in winter I love a good sweater dress or jumper jeans and boots combo
tend to stick to plain or small patterns, some checks, stripes or polka dots occasionally
at 58 I’ve found what colours suit me
As my feet are quite small and narrow I wear pointed toe flats or small heels, comfortable sandals for holidays and mainly ankle boots in winter - although I do have some knee length boots as well
gold Stan smiths are a recent purchase
I tend to wear shirts as a cover up or very plain cardigans
in winter good quality wool coats with raglan sleeves as they fit me better
I wear far too much jewellery for most peoples tastes and love an unusual nail colour/finish

All this sounds lovely, and similar to me. I'm quite classic in my clothes, but my nails are always painted - navy blue, teal, purple, whatever I fancy

Maireas · 03/07/2022 06:46

This fashion for jumpsuits cannot be the work of a woman! So inconvenient for the loo.
It's very tricky isn't it, you don't want to look badly dressed but you don't want to dress like a yr12 who doesn't mind revealing their midriff.
We don't live in a time of elegance, do we?.

Answer: Colourful dress, merino cami underneath for warmth, trainers or Docs or Birkenstocks, good hair and teeth.

I like colourful clothing!
A merino vest would bring me out in hives, but must be very toasty in cold weather 👍

Has anyone found the holy grail of t-shirts? Cotton, durable and not see through?
While I'm on the subject, too many clothes are see through......

YukoandHiro · 03/07/2022 06:57

I'm gutted skinnies have gone. I've hung onto a couple of pairs of mine. I'm 5ft and everything else makes me look truly awful

I feel the same. I'm still wearing mine!
Interesting that I'm still seeing them in shops, though but with a higher waist.

Boden essential ones - expensive but often 20% codes around.

Next also do decent ones for about £8.

Maireas · 03/07/2022 07:04

Are those Next ones ok?
I haven't been in Next for years, because the stuff looked awful.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Stick some rollers in and you'd be perfectly well dressed in Liverpool on a Saturday afternoon.

Yup the scousers don't give a shine shit what others think about them. They know how to party that lot!

Hedonism · 03/07/2022 07:25

I was going to say the next ones too. I've been looking for months for a decent well cut t-shirt in nice fabric, I've only just found some in next because I never usually go there... because it tends to be over priced and badly made.

But skinnies haven't gone. People are still wearing them, and the shops still sell them - round here anyway (Yorkshire)

TitaniasAss · 03/07/2022 07:30

I'm 55 and look ridiculous in mom jeans. I wear slim leg trousers and still wear skinny jeans. I always have good hair, nails, teeth and I think a decent blouse/top helps. Do I look fashionable? No. Do I look great? Also no, but fuck it I'll wear what the hell I like.

Thank you! I agree about Next quality.

Maireas · 03/07/2022 08:20

I've seen a whole section of skinny jeans in Weekday Clothing. I would say quite a fashion forward place.
Who knows?!
