Just caught the "What Looks Frumpy Dated" thread and it is so broad, perhaps someone can tell me, coming up 42, what in hell I should be wearing!

In theory I like that, but if you have ample bosoms, you look like a lagging jacket on a hot water tank

Oh my god that is EXACTLY what I would look like Grin

ProseccoStorm · 01/07/2022 15:03

How about something classic, you know how fashion is cyclical....

Corset, petticoat, empire line dress with sash. Finished off with dainty buttoned ankle boots, long gloves, a lace fishu and a velvet cape for warmth. Don't forget the bonnet, perhaps for bad hair days

MassiveSalad22 · 01/07/2022 15:04

Nothing to add except I used to sing that saffron song all the time as a kid and haven’t even thought about it for about 2 decades! 😃 thanks op!

balalake · 01/07/2022 15:06

Clothes that are well made and will last. Not fast fashion that contributes to climate change.

Agree with the dislike of crocs posted earlier.

Lookingoutside · 01/07/2022 15:07

‘Answer: Colourful dress, merino cami underneath for warmth, trainers or Docs or Birkenstocks, good hair and teeth.’

i think I love you.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 15:07

Definitely not crocs though, can’t get on board with those monstrosities.

Well I love my crocs but don't wear them for fashion 😆

You should be wearing what suits you & your lifestyle, what you feel comfortable in & a nod to trends. You can dress super fashionable if you want but that's different to being stylish imo.

DashboardConfessional · 01/07/2022 15:09

I don't know. I'm 37 and wearing a Stranger Things t shirt.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 15:10

Tops are generally shorter, trousers looser & hems longer as opposed to short. Shoes are heavier but they don't have to be super clumpy.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 15:14

Having said that (I will get flamed for this) no one who wants very on trend fashion advice would look for it on MNs S&B!!

Nandocushion · 01/07/2022 15:14

ZenNudist · 30/06/2022 23:52

I'm same age. My understanding is trousers have to be wider not skinny, this means no baggy or loose top half clothes, but can go for short and boxy. Footwear is clumpy.

Thing is if you're short and apple shaped like me big baggy clothes are going to make you look awful. It's all very well being a teen in big baggy jeans and a barely there crop top.

I like hush clothes for looking fairly current and I supplement with tesco for some low cost dupes.

I'm tall and apple shaped and it's true for me too

Surely Mom jeans are only meant for the young and/or tiny bodied?

I follow some chic/stylist types on insta and the one single thing they have in common isn't a style or a piece of clothing. It's that they are all a size 2.

We can start a club. With, like badges and secret handshakes of fellow-lagging jacket solidarity. Grin

Crocky · 01/07/2022 15:20

If you want to look younger then maybe follow my 18yo daughter’s trend - whatever T-shirt she happens to find that isn’t hers, the more oversized the better. Jogging bottoms. Thick Christmas socks pulled over her joggers and green crocs to finish the look. She looks delightful 😆and is perfectly happy.

Can I join please 🙋
i have square shoulders and a fairly considerable bosom and boxy tops make me look like an American football player.

Newbestmate · 01/07/2022 15:31

Bit sexy don’t you think?

you don’t want to be giving off the wrong impression.

would have been funnier if I’d managed to tag the post

Woowaa · 01/07/2022 15:33

I'm going to throw out a controversial opinion here. But I don't think fashion matters so much by the time you get to say 40. (I'm 42 BTW so am more than happily throwing myself in with this). I just think it looks a bit try too hard and like people are trying to recapture their youth. I'm old enough to remember wearing Fila trainers and Ellesse leggings when I was 15. I wore the crop top and baggy jeans in my teens too. I don't want to look like a teenager again.

I've seen a few women similar age to myself out and about lately and they have been dressed in very 90s/2000s clothes. I just think they look like they're trying top hard to convince people that they're still young and cool. I did also think to myself 'I bet they're on MN!'.

I ain't young (not saying I'm old either though!) and I'm not cool. I just want something comfortable that suits my shape.

ilovecardigans · 01/07/2022 15:35

ShandaLear · 30/06/2022 23:12

See also ponchos.

And cardigans are the superfood of clothes. Don’t listen to that lot on the other thread.

Hell, yeah!! Can't beat a good cardigan. 👍

merryhouse · 01/07/2022 15:44

@Woowaa - possibly less that they're trying to make people think they're young and cool and more that they see these clothes and think "yes I like that"

I was 11 in 1980, and I still have a visceral reaction to hems wider than knees (jeans should be narrow enough to fit inside pixie boots) and secretly hanker after Dynasty hair.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/07/2022 15:50

Avarua1 · 30/06/2022 23:34

There'll be no merino anywhere near my body!! So allergic to it. And cashmere.

OP, honestly ignore that thread, it's just people airing their opinions, not some sort of list of rules. I work in fashiony Mayfair and see women wearing things MN decree are 'dated' all the time.

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 15:51

secretly hanker after Dynasty hair.

Me too, I was too young when it was in 🥲

Fluffymule · 01/07/2022 15:53

"I look like an over stuffed bin bag during a 4 week bin men strike during the Winter of Discontent in the 70s, with half of my stuffing scattered along the pavement by a fox"

😂

hatchyu · 01/07/2022 15:54

Also youth culture in the UK has been rubbish since the 00s. Plus youth culture in general is dying as the population is getting older.

"over-65s now outnumber under-15s for first time EVER"

"300,000 fewer children under age of four compared to 2011"

I think the average age of a Glastonbury attendee is 39

Dummycrusher · 01/07/2022 15:54

I walk down the street and think how absolutely bloody AWFUL the young people look at the moment. Properly ugly fashions at the moment, sloppy, clumpy shapeless urgh. Far worse than other recent years. I don't give a shit if skinny jeans are out, they look 100 x times better than mom jeans, especially on my big athletic thighs. Personally I think middle aged women chasing teenage trends looks a bit try hard.

I mostly shop at charity shops, and it's a great way to get yourself out of the habit of trying to fashionable and develop your own style instead.
